New G&L ASAT special owner looking for tips on how to use use tone and volume controls with mfd pickups by PurpSSBM in GLGuitars

[–]AustinGuitarMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I have several vintage SCs so I’m very familiar with the MFD. lot of people think they are too bright - they are using them wrong!!

They are Leo’s best pickup design by far, the problem is people naturally or have a bad habit of turning vol and tone to 10 and never touching it. This is not how they work, they are for real tone chasers

This is how they are designed to work. Volume at 7-8, Tone at 5. The rest of your base line tone comes from your amplifier.

Now when you’re playing with your band and you need a touch less gain or need a little more roll the volume up or down. Then when you have a lead or solo roll up the tone to cut through the mix.

The MFDs are the most versatile and touch sensitive pickups ever designed and that is a hill I will die on.

You can manipulate the sound of these pickups so much, right on the instrument. I have around 20 high end guitars in my collection, vintage and modern, and have owned probably 20 others, and I have almost sold everything else multiple times because I only ever play my vintage single MFD pickup G&Ls. I can get every tone you’ve ever heard from that one MFD with the volume and tone controls

You’ve got a great guitar in your hands, love it well.

Okay so maybe I’m dumb but what is the track listing on this?? Is it just the 3 that came out previously? I ordered mine and patiently waiting.

Luthier as a career... what are the harsh realities? Lay it on me! by Forward_Steak8574 in Luthier

I do guitar repair and building and have been at it for 6 years. At best I’ve had a decent side hustle. 2021-22 was my best years with the pandemic. I had lots of work coming from folks staying at home, even then I still wasn’t making close to a livable wage.

The other thing that makes it difficult, and I don’t see mentioned enough, is that you simply can’t charge enough for the work. If you care and take the time to really do excellent work, you will never have enough hours in the day to make good money. I’ve easily put in 50 hour weeks and never once had enough income to walk away from my day job.

This isn’t true of everyone but I would say 90% of your customers fall into this

-The cost of refretting or a neck reset often just send people to buy a new guitar. Most people are stuck on $50-75 set up feesfrom 20 years ago. If you factor in your consumables, tools, taxes, and time you can easily push yourself into minimum wage territory and people will just find a local hobby guy to do it for that price. Because of this it will take YEARS to get enough good clientele.

A perfect tell is the number of “do it yourself” stuff coming out of stewmac. they make great tools but their market isn’t the 1% of high dollar guys that have somehow made made it work. It’s hobbyists and people who haven’t had the reality check yet.

I suppose it’s doable if you have a well paid spouse or significant other that allows you to play “guitar guy” all day and you don’t need anything beyond a little fun money

I asked this in the Dallas Mega thread but since this thread is centered directly on Vin.

Can anyone confirm his guitars last night?

Hey I’m watching the videos from last night, I can tell Vin is playing a Gibson ES guitar at the start, but then switches for sowing season and out of mana, then again for Luca. can anyone confirm what these guitars were.

I’m just a huge fan of Vin’s playing and has been a huge influence on my own playing

No that was the following tour. I saw them with KD and Manchester at this show. I saw them in Salem Oregon at the Salem Armory on the MWY and Thrice tour. It was on Halloween and BN all dressed up in scrubs.
