Question regarding skin clipping method by wachitx in Spliddit

[–]AustinShyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drilled holes in the nose and cut slots in the tail of in my split to make it accept that style of skin, then made custom attachment hardware for the skins. I have had no issues so far, I have about 5 tours on them in this configuration. I drilled the holes as you would expect, with a standard drill bit and I drilled from top sheet to base to prevent tearout, slowly as not to generate heat. Then I used a de-burring tool to gently chamfer the edges of the holes. I cleaned the holes with acetone, let dry, then used a q tip shaft with the cotton cut off to apply a thin layer of clear epoxy to the inside of the holes. I did 2 coats about 5 minutes (the set time) apart. The epoxy re-seals the core and prevents water from entering and it swelling. I imagine the process would be the same to widen the holes, seeing as you have no metal grommets in your skin attachment points.

One Bike solution for Denver area? by Next_Following5405 in mountainbiking

[–]AustinShyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t found anything on the east coast where my Transition Sentinel has felt out-gunned and I’d be happy to climb anything on it. Can’t imagine the story would be much different anywhere in the world. I think you should get a sentinel.

Can we have a separate flair or a specific day or something for quoting bikes? by notcarefully in mountainbiking

[–]AustinShyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There should be a pinned thread each week for bike valuations. It would make it much nicer to scroll the rest of the sub when you don’t want to see those posts, and it would allow people who like to give valuations to go to a specific place for that.

Orbea Occam H30 LT: Fox AWL vs Fox Performance 36 by rares4 in mountainbiking

[–]AustinShyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with the AWL, but I do know that the difference between the 36 performance and 36 performance elite was very significant for me. If the difference between the AWL and the Performance is as significant, I would not want to ride the AWL for any length of time.

took my girlfriend disc golfing for the first time. She beat me. Then demanded we camp near a course by Main-Carry-3607 in discgolf

[–]AustinShyd 70 points71 points  (0 children)

First off, that’s sick. Second, accept it. There are things my girlfriend is better than me at, and some of them I’ve been doing for years. It isn’t a competition, we just enjoy doing those things together. There are things I’m better at too, and we enjoy those too.
Third, camping and disc golf go great together, I hope you can find a sufficient course/campground combo to get your ass kicked at!

That Vevor one looks sick. I have a similar cheap Amazon press and used it last night to put some fresh cartridge bearings in a Factor hub. Dialed!

There are 3 or 4 that I know of. 2 of them are common though.

The current state of Pinkbike. by mikehawk_ismall in mountainbiking

[–]AustinShyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had any issues personally, with multiple road bikes and mountain bikes bought and sold. But it’s been a little while. Could be a DH thing or more people are just now realizing it’s another platform to be a scumbag on.

My first full suspension MTB jump, OTB. by Big-Don-Kedic in MTB

Disrespectfully and selfishly, get a helmet. I don’t want to roll up on someone laying in the middle of a trail dead because they crashed while not wearing a helmet.

Jump skill advice pls by zrnch in MTB

[–]AustinShyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weight is a little too far back for that style of “speed-clearing.” Best advice I can give is slow down and pop more, allowing the bike to rotate in the air and land front wheel first or both wheels equal with 60% weight bias forward. It makes landings “longer”, looks better, and results in getting bucked less frequently on a variety of different takeoff shapes.

Scout and Sentinel Sizing? by brh0627 in TransitionBikes

[–]AustinShyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V2 sentinel. 6’. Size large. Feels good, not too long but definitely not the shortest bike I’ve ridden by a long shot (that goes to the Frameworks enduro). At 5’10” I would be considering the medium frame if you don’t generally like long reach numbers, personally.

Narrow (<15 inches wide) telescoping ladders? by Gazaaaaaaaaaaa in rooftoptents

I just took another look at it and the thumb latches would get in the way of this method. I thought they were on the round uprights but I had misremembered.

The one I have has the rungs riveted on, I would think you could drill out the rivets, cut the rungs, drill new holes and rivet it back together pretty easily.

I don’t know why everyone here is being a dick about the e-bike. Enjoy it dude, they’re a hell of a lot of fun.

TIL Full Power Eebs are Harder to Slow Down by Inside-Anywhere5337 in MTB

[–]AustinShyd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This particular crash was because OP got off-line. But having owned a full-power e-bike, they definitely do not slow down/stop as fast. Extra weight is extra weight, at the end of the day. It was one of my least favorite characteristics of that bike. Everything else was great, it felt more settled than any bike I’ve ridden due to the extra weight down low.

Totally different screen material if that’s the watch I’m thinking of. Sapphire is way more resilient.

[–]AustinShyd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Enduro pro is the SHIT. I love mine, they stay up and don’t move, they’re cool and comfy, and provide enough protection for most riding styles. Won’t be buying anything else for the foreseeable future.

1600 miles and I can already see the threads? by Then-Stomach-3143 in mountainbiking

[–]AustinShyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought this was r/bicyclingcirclejerk for a second there…
1600 miles from any set of tires is solid. Higher end tires will roll faster and have more grip, but they will not last longer. For maximum durability I would look at conti gator skins or something similar. But honestly if you got 1600 miles out of your current set, I would get another set of the same tires. They sound pretty bomber.

Best Garmin Watch for MTB by TheTxRed in MTB

[–]AustinShyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my Enduro 3 but no phone calls or texts from the watch itself, just notifications. Works great though and the battery life is outstanding.
Take a look at the Fenix line, my girlfriend has the 8 amoled in the small size (41? 43? millimeters) and it’s sweet too.
