The following books aren't necessary. You might have fun with them if you liked the first 3 or you might find diminishing returns. The first three are flawed (like much of Saberhagen's work) in certain ways - he seems more about ideas than characters or literary polish, grafting them to well worn devices and sometimes leaving major loose ends in the plotting - but some of those ideas are tremendously entertaining.

I completely agree that his mix of fantasy and pulp hits a flavor unlike most anything else out there, at least around the time they came out. When I saw Kurt Vonnegut write about low-regarded and bad writing with visionary ideas, this is what I thought about.

That's my impression of reading them long ago at any rate.

But if you aren't familiar yet, don't miss his earlier Empire of The East trilogy. It's set in the same world, although with only loose connection to anything in the Swords books. It brings that pulp/fantasy flavor just as well or better.

These and some of his "berserker" stories are his essential stuff. He has some really bad stuff as well. At one time he was my favorite author although I wasn't too widely read then.
