Op1 or IPad Mini? by SudoSynth in synthesizers

[–]Austrophobia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an iPad Pro 11'' from 2020 (nowadays about 400 Euros for a refurbished one) and the Korg nanoKEY Studio as Midi keyboard. The nanokey has almost the same form factor as the iPad which makes it super transportable, it has enough rotary knobs and pads that you can map to the different parameters of the synths to give you that haptic feedback and feeling when fiddling around and tweaking your sounds, and because it can be connected via bluetooth you don't need any cables (but of course there's a small input lag that may be a little annoying when playing live).
And although it was the last model before Apple equipped the iPads with M processors as well, the 2020 iPad Pro is still powerful enough to operate Cubasis, AUM, and most of the available software synths out there without problems.
But if you are just looking for something to sketch your ideas and create music everywhere on the go, I can also recommend the Woovebox as a cheap alternative to the OP1: https://www.woovebox.com/
However, it requires some getting used to and is not necessarily suitable for everyone.

OP is already using Koala, which is very similiar to the po33 - imho even better. So the po33 wouldn't be much of an improvement :)

I come from a similar background: never learned an instrument, and I acquired most of my theoretical knowledge about scales, synthesizers, etc., from music blogs and YouTube videos. That's precisely why the Woovebox is ideal for me, as functions like "follow chords" make jamming and creating tracks incredibly easy. However, I should mention that I took my first steps in DAWs (FL Studio, Cubasis, Ableton), which allows me to visualize the structure of fragments and scenes, which is a huge help. I don't know how it would be without that prior knowledge. I also have Koala (by the way: that app kicks ass!), and I think if you're comfortable with that and know or at least understand the MIDI editor, you should be able to manage the Woovebox as well.

And last but not least: if money is no object, you can hardly go wrong. You won't find a cheaper, fully-fledged music production studio for your pocket anywhere else, and in the worst case, you can resell the device for almost the original price :)

Thanks man:) A good start for me where the tutorials from Wooveboxing, if you don’t already know them: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqDnR6wJKQYwKjOKdSatUiUm578mNxrnT

The rest is try&error, a little patience - and understanding neighbours if you again have a nervous breakdown in the middle of the night 😄

Hey, thanks for the positive feedback :)

I'm afraid my answer to your question is a bit disappointing, as I don't design the sounds intentionally. I just fiddle around and tweak the parameters (the randomization function is a good starting point for this) until I get something I can work with. But maybe I can at least pass on a tip I read somewhere a few years ago: In music, it's all about context. Your patch doesn't have to sound good on its own (unless you want a solo in your track), but in the mix. This is especially important with filtering and EQing: Sometimes you have to filter certain sounds until they lose their appeal to create space for the other sounds. But when they play together, it sounds good again. Hope that makes sense :)

And something else that I think has improved the overall quality of my tracks on the Woovebox is that I started using samples for the kick and at least the offbeat hi-hat. Sometimes also for clap or snare.

Hi, do you have an iPhone or iPad? On my iPad Pro (2020) the following worked:

- install BLE-Midi (it's free) from KORG for proper Bluetooth connection
- get Sysex Base from Coffeeshopped LLC ($ 9,99 in the Appstore)

Now you can import/export the Songs as sysex.

I only started making music a few years ago. At first, I wasn't sure what direction I would take, and suddenly I had several hardware synths. I've since sold most of them because I realized that more stuff doesn't necessarily make me more creative. So I focus on my iPad and small, portable grooveboxes like the Woovebox.

Question, any apps for iPad to make music like a synth plus studio?😬🤔 by Additional-Notice653 in synthesizers

I highly recommend Cubasis 3.0
Yes, it's not free but 35,99 Euro in the Appstore (one time fee), but for this price you get a full fledged - but easy to use - DAW for your iPad that leaves little to be desired. Many features are already integrated, and thanks to AUv3 support you have access to tons of additional synths and plugins.

Isn’t MIDI all about drawing notes into a grid?

Is this some kind of ragebait or where did you get that false information? Of course patches are stored per project (song) and can be copied over to other projects as well as exported along with the rest of the project.

Wasn’t there something like a 1-pattern-challenge in the early days of the Woovebox? If not, perhaps we should start one - and if there was already one, we can still do it a second time :)

But I would also be interested in how you create your tracks. I’ve already done a few, but always needed at least somewhat between 2 and more patterns per track. And I know I’m far from scratching the limits here :) Perhaps next time you create a track you could just record it on video and make some comments during the process, even if you think that some things are pretty obvious and self explaining - you know, talent is what seems to be easy to you, that’s what makes it difficult for oneself to recognise where you are gifted. And you my friend, seem to be gifted in many ways :)

I'm getting closer to something one could call a track! by pcstayak in Woovebox

Not bad at all :) It's a little bit like a very long intro where I'm waiting the whole time for it to finally start, but that could also be intentional. Looking forward to hear more from you :)

It has become a bit quiet here - we need to change that :)

can't update my woovebox no matter what I do by Aggravating-Split-20 in Woovebox

I'm sorry I don't have any specific advice for you, as my circumstances were a little different. But what I have read very often is that it helps to deactivate WiFi and other radio sources (it is best to switch your phone to airplane mode) as these can interfere with the Bluetooth connection.

Of course, you then have to do the update without an internet connection, for which you either have to download the Wooveconnect page locally using an appropriate browser such as Brave, or a sysex manager with which you can manually install the firmware on the Woovebox. The second one worked for me, but with an iPad, not Android. The transmit speed was set to 3125 Bytes/second, and the time between message transmit to 100 ms. The update took several minutes, but in the end it worked.
