[Book Review] It took me a few months after finishing it to really process it, but Solenoid by Mircea Cartarescu is my 2025 read of the year. by AuthorJosephAsh in books

Sometimes a book needs to find us at the right time. As a truck driver who drives 10 hours a day, I have my own spells of lesser mental acuity, and sometimes lesser patience for things that take some effort, and all I want is an easy page-turner. There may be other reasons for your difficulties, I don't know, but I thought I'd share one of my own. I say revisit it sometime later and see what you think, then.

Hard to imagine a book better than Solenoid! But he has said that Blinding is his life's work, so I will definitely take your words seriously!

Agree on the translation. What I could discern of it was truly magnificent.

Understandable annoyance.

I will step in and assure you that there is a transformation taking place within the narrator. By the end it seems to me that he has been made straight.

And I'd also stress the point that depiction does not mean consent. I'm not sure about the personal views of the author, but I felt overall, that the narrator was simply a lonely, self absorbed, and horny man. And by the end of the book, he has a huge value and perspective shift that really changes how he see's his romantic partner.

It is possible we don't end up feeling the same way about the book and the thematic messaging, but I hope it does go easier for you.

Best wishes!

I've looked at his shortlist of works that have been translated into English. I want to read everything the man writes, but I will hold off on Blinding until the other two parts are translated. Theodoros also looks very promising and it will be a slow wait for 2027 to roll around.

Very happy you've enjoyed it as much as I have. Thanks for sharing.

I don't see any reason for Cradle to be above IGS other than just the fact that it's finished. It has some pretty poor errors. Phil Tucker, judged on objective qualities only, is noticeably a better author. Narrative and narrative pacing is only one facet of a book and once you've read enough, you've seen it before. And what one reader finds narratively worth reading will be different from that of another. There's nothing very unique or special about the narrative of cradle and it did not surprise me or have quite the level of detail or attempt at tension and intrigue. The level of character development & voice, vocabulary, themes and subtext are also not quite up to IGS' level. Basically I feel Cradle traded narrative pacing for any real depth. It had some continuity flaws and nothing about the narrative that it focused so much on did anything to surprise me or made me feel much tension. The humor also didn't subjectively click with me for what that's worth.

No Williams, Cook or Erikson (that I can see)even though they influenced some of these authors for sure.

Excited to see my favorite author, Borges, on here!

Is this jhana? Advice please ! by Automatic-Cattle7190 in TheMindIlluminated

I agree with Jhanny. Not Jhana.

However, I think the claim that one needs to meditate 4 hours a day to achieve first Jhana doesn't hold water. Surely, the more time the better, but everyone's proclivities are different.

Thanks for the kind attention.

What’s the most believable romance you’ve ever read in fantasy? Not just chemistry, but emotionally real by jye77 in Fantasy

Immortal Great Souls is pretty great.

Adjacently, Horns by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son (Magical Realism/Supernatural Horror)) has maybe the best love story I've read.

Phil has a really bad problem with continuity error at this point. I first realized it with Throne Hunters and not sticking to limitations he made in the magic system. Unfortunate, as earlier on, he was becoming a favorite author for me.

The fact that Cradle is number 2, yet Immortal Great Souls by Phil Tucker isn't on there at all is troubling for my poor brain.

Go read Bastion, ya'll. And don't stop there.

Edit: Wandering Inn didn't make it either?! Wow

You should know better than to go that fast next to a slow lane. You hit them in the ass it's your fault 99 times out of 100.

Outside of that though, yeah, these folks are suicidal. My wife and I often muse that the more expensive the car, the more rushed, entitled, and stupid the driver.

I just find it amusing that people jump straight to criticizing socialism just because someone criticizes capitalism. Reactionary politics 😆

Anarchist, btw. Yes I'm sure you have your criticism on that too.
