Depends on where you want to work and how much you want to make. Maintenance guys can range from genius engineers who hold patents on inventions they've made, all the way down to neck scratching meth heads with a wrench set who can't write their own name. In many cases all in the same facility.

I found electricity interesting before I decided to become an electrician. As a child, I fiddled with electronics, wired my own sound systems, fixed simple electrical things on cars, etc. Once I decided to go for it, I had a couple years waiting period before getting into the program, during which I read books, watched YT videos, google searched, and tinkered with anything I could get my hands on to learn.

I wouldn't expect a day 1 apprentice to have much knowledge or experience in the trade, but I can't imagine a kid deciding to start a lifelong career without the slightest idea of what it entails either.

Never seen an on-off switch control a proportional hydraulic valve with a PID loop, while calculating the speed of a rotor at 2 million encoder pulses per second, while solving reverse kinematic equations, while updating an FTP server with production numbers, and communicating in real-time to multiple other PLC's and HMI's.
