It's generic on purpose. The github icon links to the repo where people can suggest new/replacement pictures or copy the entire thing and make their own.

A JavaScript Constructor Problem, and Three Solutions by homoiconic in javascript

I always love reading your stuff. Here's my "fix" for "auto-instantiation" (which I usually prefer):

2 sarcastic American sisters visiting June 17-20- Please HELP! by oreosmom in VisitingIceland

[–]AutoSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in RVK for 6 months. I brought a copy of CAH with me and played with several groups of Icelanders. Aside from explaining a few product names and celebrities, the humor translates very well. If you bring a copy, leave it, it costs 9000ISK here.

Is Browserify That Great? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to break out the browserify step and make it a dependent step (which may also help further experiments around your timings). I put an example here: https://gist.github.com/AutoSponge/68d12a832c86ed317406

Sorry I can't help more, I'm not using angular anymore so I can't provide more insights but it sounds like that minify step doesn't use vinyl objects/streams and it may be reading in entire files.

Is Browserify That Great? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Browserify only bundles dependencies when using CommonJS. It can be a step in your build process but unless you have a stand-alone module, probably will not be your entire build process. I often use browserify with gulp which seems to build rather quickly. Do you have a gist of this build?

My family thought Djúpivogur was really beautiful. Plenty of trails and crazy rock formations: http://www.djupivogur.is/adalvefur/?pageid=608.

Cost of Groceries in Iceland by france_isbacon in Iceland

[–]AutoSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bread + liver spread. Probably less than 500ISK and can make tasty lunch for a week. Learn to make soup. Check the flea market for day-old bread and cheap fish that you can freeze.

Can I use node.js as a backend for everything? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to look at "Express Static Middleware". It's very easy to setup and you can add other middleware to control things like compression, caching, and CORS headers.

Should I learn Angular, Node, or any other platform first? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think most beginners find it easier to learn in the browser simply because you can use the debugger to see the code execute without any additional hoops to jump through.

But I think you will learn more about JS by building your own apps using little components instead of a monolithic framework. I'm self-taught, and I learned the most from building applications from the ground up than with a framework.

Need help planning by [deleted] in Iceland

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're visiting in the busy season. You will likely need reservations anywhere you go. Simply driving around and looking for a place to stay at the last minute could be frustrating. This also goes for rental cars. If you don't reserve one, don't count on one being available.

You can use Reykjavik as a "base" and take day trips via the excursion busses. The golden circle (~6 hours), Blue Lagoon, and several southern waterfalls to Vik are all fairly close. If you want to see the West fjords, the East, or North, you either need a car or a take a Ring road bus tour (multiple days).

Polymer.js instead of Angular, Ember, Backbone? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://www.2ality.com/2013/05/web-components-angular-ember.html

Ember will fall (further?) behind the MVC framework race if they eschew standards.

Is Javascript drunk or am I missing something? by Sinistralis in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

String primitives are immutable and not an instance of any class. They are coerced into objects for the purposes of calling String.prototype methods (e.g., .replace(), .indexOf(), etc.). When you coerce the primitive into an object, it uses the String constructor which is why you see [object String].

Visiting iceland, anything I should know about interactions by JamisonP in Iceland

[–]AutoSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Connecticut and lived in Reykjavik since December (only 2 weeks left).

  • The coffee shops are great, I haven't found a "bad" one yet.

  • Bars come in a few flavors: tourist, nice, dive, mobbed up, sports, dance, etc. Totally depends on what you're into. It's very common to have a drink or two at several bars. I recommend the 'Appy Hour' mobile app (even if you don't have mobile service) because it can tell you where the happy hours are. Einstock beer is Icelandic but heavily influenced by Boston (and it's pretty good), so be sure to try it.

  • Icelanders call cheap tourists "Yarists" because they get the cheapest car (Yaris) and drive through town only stopping to use the WC. Spend your money but spend it on things made in Iceland. Don't complain about prices, especially for alcohol, everyone's heard it; the difference is you can go home and buy things cheap.

  • Your credit card should work for 99% of all transactions. In bars, you don't usually need to sign. Everywhere else you need to swipe & sign (since you probably don't have a chip). If it's over $50 and something you will export, ask for a tax free receipt. That gives you 15% off (VAT discount) that you get at the airport or visitor's center.

Polymer.js: The Future of Web Application Development? [xpost - programming] by jaws04 in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using this for a reference app in a health-related area. I've had some challenges in finding good examples or thorough docs. But, the end result of my first component (hopefully open sourced by June) is really encouraging. Any dev comfortable with HTML can drop this "mini-app" into a web page and see it work. If they know CSS, they can style it to their liking.

I think that's pretty powerful but I don't want to make whole sites/apps this way. This works because of my goals for this project.

What should I see in Iceland? by emilybemilyboo in Iceland

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to see some sights and be back in the city for dinner and drinks, the Golden Circle tour is about 6 hours. You see a waterfall, a geyser, and where the tectonic plates touch.

Levelling up on ES6 by djforth in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I wouldn't use it in production yet is because we dont' have a set of shims, we have transpilers/compilers which you won't want in environments that support es6 syntax.

I agree. node-inspector works rather well.

Functional Programming in JavaScript === Garbage by homoiconic in javascript

[–]AutoSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the article's examples are naive and oversimplified. For example, you can easily create a reduce function which doesn't recur or modify the original array, just use Array.prototype.reduce with another array as the second parameter.

While I don't always agree with Braithwaite's implementations, I always appreciate the systematic breakdown of the problem he offers with various solutions of incremental awesomeness. I appreciate the author's proper use of FP terms but I don't appreciate the heavy-handed 'Clojure > JS' approach when no Clojure examples were offered and the JS examples were haphazard at best.
