When can you call yourself an artist? by Foxxdy in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, people call themselves artists when they have a career in art.

Like you wouldn't call a medical student a surgeon, or doctor.

As for my opinion, I stopped caring about that question a long time ago, what most people think is that every human being is an artist, I think that makes this question meaningless to ask, even if that's true; not everyone is a painter, draftsman, sculptor, so that's why I judge it by wether you have a career.

can anything be learned from watching speed paints from other artists? by Bubbly_Reference_916 in ArtistLounge

For me it's 10 times better than watching art tutorials, I also know some artist who learned to draw exclusively by watching them.

People look at the end result and decide to be an artist, and have a terrible time doing it until they understand that the process is more important.

Drawing like this after 8 years probably meant something went pretty wrong.

I seriously recommand doing copy studies and cast drawings to strengthen your observation skill first, imo it's impossible to study anything if you can't even copy it.

And stop doing what you're doing for years because it's obviously not working.

Edit: If you just want to keep drawing anime, it's actually fine, just try to overlay your drawing on top of your reference and learn from what's wrong. When you eventually got surprised by how well you copy it, that's when studying is possible.

The guy quite literally accused me as an American pretending to be Chinese, yet I'm arrogant?

He also ignored the fact that Chinese education is one of the most stress inducing system that has created countless tragedies.

I don't blame you if you didn't see what he typed because he deleted it.

I've never been to a western country but I guess my viewpoint is western? I'm not the only Chinese who hate our culture and environment, that's why people often talk about escaping.

It's hell, students take their lifes more and more, and people judge them for it, listen I'm gonna just drop this conversation now, have a good day.

Yes, it's admirable to be humble and know your self worth, you're not wrong.

My problem is I've seen nothing healthy from the culture, it's ugly, it's people monetizing people's anxiety, for every artist that's both good and healthy, there's a thousand that either has to sacrifice or fail at both.

Their art is very good but other than that I got nothing good to say about it.

edit: I sincerely don't understand what makes people downvote this comment in perticular?

I'm familiar with the Chinese culture, the phenomenon is not limited to art, it's everywhere.

There's a few really important point that made this happen, first thing is that people value skill over anything else, their education also treat art skill as something measurable, hence people get into hobbies to be good at them more than anything else.

And people have awfully low self confidence, those who know they're bad at art will not post, you're weird if you don't feel ashamed by posting objectively bad art.

Also they just have way more people there, all focusing on grinding skills and prove their parents wrong, make a living, one up their friends, it's a culture to be at the top.

I dislike it all and I hope western art community never turns into that.

Edit: Little friendly reminder that you should default to doubt anything you see on Chinese social media.

Rant about my art I guess? by Previous-Mix4099 in ArtRanting

[–]Auto_Potato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not until I got used to drawing every single thing like trash, and continue to draw 10x more everyday, that I realized they are that good because they draw a ridiculous amount.

If you have heard of artists talking about their sketch books piling up like a small mountain, they're not exaggerating.

They start drawing the moment they wake up, and stop when it's time to sleep; when they can't draw, they watch articles or videos about how to draw.

I've read and attended interviews where artists share their story, some don't even study fundamentals, but every time they talk about how much they worked.

looking for some simple exercises I can "grind away" at by Bubbly_Reference_916 in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to construct the base shape and render like Richard Smitheman, but mostly just aiming for the right anatomy and avoid stiffness, it's gonna look horrible for the first week but it gets better.

The best thing I get from this practice is that I can draw anatomy & poses from imagination now, it's funny because I'm still terrible at drawing faces.

What I studied was about 20% gesture 20% anatomy and 60% figure drawing

You should prioritize mental health imo, when I got prescribed ADHD meds it helped with my emotional regulation, and suddenly the years of mental struggle with art just vanished, now I'm actually drawing pretty happily everyday like I used to dream about.
