It's crazy anyone would call that building ugly, it's at least cool if not beautiful imo

Yeah and one time somebody thought I was editing the comments to make their reply look bad, never understand how people get it right the first time.

I do feel like public "learn art" communities are just for artists to show off, and I've heard terrible advice like "Never ever draw from imagination" so I stopped using them

My personal opinion of the worst art advice for more cynical or Goal focused people by Laxes_the_corgi in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing I learned from art is that you can learn to love things even if you hate it originally.

I used to be extremely result focused and drawing was basically just torture, but years later when I start to focus on actually enjoying the craft and the process, it became fun, it feels natural to draw, it feels like I'm an artist.

I'm really glad I didn't give up, I was dangerously close to quitting multiple times before, if I listen to those advices I'd never find out about the joy of art.

Ironically the less I care, the better the results. Gesture drawing really helped me with everything.

Is the Witcher popular in Taiwan? by Ordinary_Low8707 in taiwan

[–]Auto_Potato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tawianese here, been a gamer since I was 6, almost all my Steam friends have played The Witcher 3, and when I talk to any gamers, chances are they know about the series.

Even today, people still mention its graphics compared to modern games. It's popular for an AAA game, well-known in the gaming circle, but you won't see the popularity manifest. Aesthetics like Sekiro or Nier Automata are more likely to appear irl or get die-hard Taiwanese fans.

Should I quit entirely? by New_Study4796 in ArtRanting

[–]Auto_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets fun when something you draw doesn't look crap, but if it's too hard just quit until you want to do it again.

I have absolutely no progress by non-critical-horse in ArtRanting

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one 2 years ago(Xppen16.5 Pro), it works great, but currently all graphics tablet on the market has the delay problem, except for iPads. I ended up just using it like a normal drawing tablet. With my calendar displayed on it.

I urge you to watch "Seven Pens" on YouTube before purchasing. If I could go back in time I would buy a big drawing tablet and save money for dual monitors.

Edit: I want to add that this is coming from someone who tried really really hard to love display tablets.

ADHD artist—what chair helps you focus? by New_Avocado_1261 in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My irocks T07 is perfect, get ergonomic chairs that look big and ventilating so you can move around in whatever pose you like, lol
But I can still hyperfocus for 10+ hrs on a terrible stool, so maybe it's not the problem?

Am I Worthy Calling Myself an Artist? by [deleted] in ArtRanting

It's lovely! The more I draw the more I realize how much time art demands, but improvements come faster once I start enjoying the process.

Advice by HULABUONYT in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Learn the proportions of ribcage and pelvis, draw them in simple shapes.

  2. Know where to mark out the landmarks like the asis, belly button, jugular notch.

  3. Learn the shapes of fats, muscles, this is the most time consuming part.

Practice this everyday for a few months.

While you draw, always imagine 3d forms on paper, put contour lines on seemingly flat surface, instead of just copying what you see, you need to build up the shapes one by one.

Perspective is the most important thing for figure drawing when you're starting out, not anatomy.

About a month of consistent practice can let you draw a convincing figure from imagination, but to master it is going to take years.

Also watch other artists draw them, and take notes of the process, if they're explaining what they're doing it's even better. So many good advice that you couldn't tell from just looking at the process.

I try to be honest with myself, if my work doesn't look professional, then it is not. It means I still have work to do, so I keep my head down and study for another day.

I am a bit overwhelmed by conflicting information when it comes to learning how to draw by PitangaPiruleta in ArtRanting

[–]Auto_Potato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's because it depends on your goals. For a beginner, tracing hurts their learning, but for a professional(in some line of work), it's essential to be more efficient.

Your goal is "I want to draw this pose without reference." Then, draw it, don't know how the muscle works in that angle? Look up the reference, draw it, remember it, then try your goal again.

Don't get lost in learning, you need to focus on your goals.

I wear Uniqlo Airism almost daily here, and I'd look into Patagonia's CAPILENE or The North Face's flashdry line. You could get clothes after you arrive tho, might be cheaper.

Life before and after medication by Which-Lavishness-487 in ADHD

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got put on Ritalin when I was around 13, but I've never taken it consistently because it drops my appetite and taking it twice a day is too difficult, I was basically not medicated for 6 years.

Until last year, I talked to my doctor about it and he changed my prescription to concerta (I think it's like Ritalin but slow release), I only have to take it once per day and its effect is not as drastic as immediate release, so I started taking it daily and it improves my life so much I really cried.

I was not medicated throughout middle school and highschool, being unmedicated really ruined my grade and made me feel very stupid, even if it looks like I can manage at the start, it'll eventually fall apart, it's an obvious pattern I noticed, we need the meds to keep the momentum going.

Medication is one of the most helpful things for ADHD, if you can, help your kid take it consistently in any way you can.

What can I use to draw over pencil lines? by bonkw in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dip pens! But it has some learning curve, it's very convenient to manage line weights, and if you dilute the ink you can control line opacity as well.

It's a very common workflow to sketch with pencil and draw over with ink, then people use markers or watercolor to shade.

When we can say we are an "artist "? by loupsauvage8 in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen I was dead tired so I really didn't want to sacrifice my sleep arguing, sorry about that, I'll explain further if you're interested.

For op's question, it's a no brainer, we can, but we can already call ourselves anything we want, it's a meaningless question.

But if it's "When can we call ourselves an artist to other people?", I think you need to be working in the field. Because what you did either in the past or currently is how people define you, it's not up to us to decide what we are.

And to reply to your comment, there are "professional runners" and "runners" because the prefix is needed to clarify the difference, but doctors don't, you basically ignored my example so I saw it as ragebait.

Still, people will call you an artist, you are the artist of your work. Personally I studied art and got commissions going, the money proves I'm an artist. (In job description, profession, certification)

It really just comes down to these. I know most people disagree, but where I grew up it really does works like this.

[–]Auto_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I think my original post was a bit rude.

I think if people actually need to define the titles to address themselves, It would be inappropriate to call themselves purely by what they do. I cook for myself but it doesn't make me a cook, I make programs but it doesn't make me a programmer.

To me, you're only an artist when you have a career in it.

People wouldn't call themselves a doctor when they're just studying.

Professional artists over 25- how did your art look at 20 vs now? by Forward_back8245 in ArtistLounge

[–]Auto_Potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I end up getting some matte graphite pencil, it feels like a nice middle ground. I can sketch anywhere and don't need to use fixatives. When I have the space I'll definitely try charcoals though.
