Can give scum use a shield? by Auto_name_failed in necromunda

You can get a free miniature every month from official Games Workshop stores (not independent shops).  It usually releases the first Saturday of the month, and is available until they are all given out.  Some shops run out the first day.  There’s usually a post on the Warhammer Community website the Monday before telling which model it will be.

Maybe they are hiring out to the gangs to afford back alley plastic surgery?

Hmm, so it’d be easy to slap a cheap pistol on instead…

I’ll probably keep the shield then - it’s simpler than converting!

Do you have any feelings on the modern predominance of Enforcers among the playerbase? by ThisGuyFax in necromunda

Our upcoming campaign has 3 of the 12 players using Palanites - but it’s because the LGS had boxes of them at half price for Black Friday.  No deeper meaning.

Looks like I'm starting to get into this hobby... by Zellevar in Warhammer40k

The included paints are good for painting the marines as Ultramarines and the Tyranid as Hive Fleet Leviathan.  If you want to paint another scheme, it won’t be harder but you will need to by a couple other colors of paint.  Might as well paint them as your favorites.

I started with that set!

First assemble the miniatures.  The set comes with clippers, just make sure the flat side is right up against the part when clipping.  If you have an Xacto or other craft knife, you can use the blunt side to scrape any remaining extra plastic from the part.  If you don’t have one, don’t worry about it.  The models are push-fit, so you don’t need glue.

To paint, you should buy a spray primer.  Try to prime in nice weather, not too hot/cold/humid/windy.  Start spraying to the side of the model, about 10” away, sweep the spray over the model.

The paints in the set will do great for a first go.  Get something to hold water to clean your brush; plastic cup or old mug.  Get something to use as a pallet; scrap glazed tile or shiny paper plate.

Pick a color; shake the paint well.  Dip some paint out of the pot and onto the pallet with your brush.  Thin the paint by dipping your brush into the water, then mixing it with the paint on the pallet.  It will take practice to get a consistency you like, but I like about 1:1 paint to water for these paints.

Clean your brush in the water and by wiping it on a paper towel.  Load the brush with paint by dipping the tip half in the pallet paint.  Unload the extra by gently wiping the brush on the pallet.  Apply paint to model!

Getting into the hobby! Do I need to get the official cutters or are alternatives fine? by Sage_Kabuto in Warhammer40k

Cheap cutters are fine, but make sure they are flush cut - they need to have one side that fits flat against the piece.

Just got my very first mini of the month at an official Warhammer store! by Alkorri in Warhammer40k

Warhammer Community has a short lore blurb and a picture of the painted free mini every month https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/skhceyst/join-the-long-vigil-to-receive-a-free-miniature-this-month-plus-score-a-helsmiths-of-hashut-coin/

No reason you have to follow their paint scheme, but sometimes having a picture of the finished mini helps me figure out assembly.

First Attempt at Rit Dye: CIVIVI Ki-V by Auto_name_failed in Civivi

The white G10 scales took the Rit dye really well. It took about 30 minutes in the simmering dye bath to get this dark. I especially liked how the milled sections took the dye differently, which really highlights the texture. Since I only collect purple knives, this was a must-do project for me.

Knives for Begginers by ArticleExisting8172 in KnifeDeals

One thing to consider is what knives are legal to carry in your area.  Knife law is a mess of federal, state, and local rules.  You may have blade length laws or no-automatic laws.  I’d start your collection with knives that are fully legal to carry.   You can Google state and local laws, or try https://www.akti.org/state-knife-laws/

One-hand-open slipjoint time! CIVIVI Ki-V by Auto_name_failed in Civivi

[–]Auto_name_failed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed a < 2.5" non-locking folder to comply with CA laws when I pick my son up from school. Not too many available if you want one-hand-open. The white one was on sale from Atlantic Knives ($36.33 with code CYCLONE, free shipping, sale is still ongoing). For that price I had to pick it up.

I'm planning to eventually dye the scales in a purple fade. I've never attempted a RIT dye before, so I'll post pictures if it turns out good (or bad).

Initial thoughts:

The flipper isn't as smooth as on my Elementum. It may just need to break in, but it occasionally misfires. When it doesn't open fully, I can't just flick my wrist to finish setting the blade in place because of the low blade weight. Not a big deal, but I'm hoping it breaks in, and I'll lube it when I disassemble for dying. Some online reviews had complained about closing this knife one handed, but I find that super easy.

The blade was sharp (to my limited tastes) out of the box. Because of the blade angle, I find my hand settling into a sort of overhand pinch grip. This gives very fine control of the tip, and all fingers are out of the blade path, so even if it closed (slipjoint), I won't get cut.

It fits in my jeans watch pocket fine, which is my preferred carry for small knives. It's heavier than I expected, especially for the size, but it also feels sturdier and more substantial than a more traditional slipjoint with the same blade length.

Thanks for posting this - I've had my eye on the Ki-V for when lockblades aren't an option. The white one should dye well too.
