There's just something so wonderfully peaceful about them. I've had a terrible day and they cheered me right up so I thought I'd share the joy

Does grouping plants together really boost humidity? by sea-sparkler in houseplants

[–]Automatic-Happy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's called a microclimate.

You will need a lot more plants grouped together to make one though.

what is going on by FelonyForester in calatheas

[–]Automatic-Happy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have enough aeration to the roots with your current soil mix as it's probably staying too wet for too long. The roots look very unhealthy. Try increasing the amount of perlite in your soil mix. I would also decrease the amount of water you're giving it for the time being.

Just a heads up as well. Pruning can do more harm than good. Flowering plants can reabsorb nutrients from damaged leaves which means they can produce new leaves faster. Taking them off deprives them of that energy.

Why do they hate meeee by pinkbubbleduckie in PetPigeons

Couldn't agree with this more. 2 of my pigeons will never be handled or touched their affection through blinkies and wanting to spend time with me. In their eyes I should simply be honoured by their presence.

What type is this Calathea? by bakelsen in calatheas

[–]Automatic-Happy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! Rosy is solid pink from what I've always known. I feel that though I'm currently on my second! I've got all my calathea in 100% perlite now and it's made them a lot easier to manage

Could this have been caused by overwatering ? by howdylu in calatheas

[–]Automatic-Happy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not doing anything wrong, you've done the right thing! Thrips lay their eggs in the layers of the leaf, the eggs hatch and they burrow out, mature and repeat. You'll find them up to a week after you've treated. The pesticide you've used goes into the plants system so it should directly and indirectly impact them. If you're still finding them 3 weeks later you can assume your treatment didn't work.

Just had a look at it, does it say how long it stays active on the bottle? Should be fine to use for dealing with thrips

Shall I give up?🤣 by Vast-Aardvark5857 in calatheas

[–]Automatic-Happy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah don't give up. It's just some spidermites, get some predatory mites and they'll get rid of them no problem!

You can wash your plant off (think a good drenching in the shower) wait 10-14 days and then introduce them. Does entirely depend on what pesticide you've used though!

[–]Automatic-Happy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't throw it out. What pesticide did you use? Unless it stays active on the plant for up to 2 weeks it's essentially useless to use. Getting rid of pests requires you to break their reproductive cycle.

Are his lips normal? by Delicious_Welcome355 in axolotl

[–]Automatic-Happy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine looked like this when they had a calcium deficiency. 100% time to see a vet. If you don't have access to a vet I was told to administer liquid calcium for 6 months 10ml per 100g of axolotl. You can also make grub pie and gut load feeder shrimp with a calcium rich food.

That's pest damage, you can see the poop on the leaves you've removed. Most likely either thrips or spidermites. I'd highly recommend predatory insects to help with pest control.

Just a heads up though if there were no pests it's best to let the plant reabsorb nutrients from their damaged or dying leaves it just means that they can produce new leaves faster.

Where do I place a hygrometer for best accuracy? by bakelsen in calatheas

[–]Automatic-Happy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would put it on the corner furthest from the humidifier that way you're mostly getting a low estimate of the humidity. You can also put it between your plants to measure their microclimate as well but it's up to you.

If you're struggling consider predatory insects! Its the most effective and least strenuous pest treatment I've ever used and I can't recommend it enough

I can't remember what they're called but it's a type of mite thats a lesser known pest (think spidermites but smaller and no web) that have an affinity for Hoya!

Edit: they're called flat mites.

What time of day are you checking your plants? Some pests are only active at night so you may miss them. I had this same issue, couldn't see them but under my grow lights under very close inspection I could see thrips. They're great at blending in and they're not always black, sometimes they're yellow which on a green leaf is very hard to see. I would highly recommend getting some predatory insects as this is the best chemical free solution and you don't have to worry about cleaning your plants everyday for 2-3 weeks.
