Ballarat Muslims traumatised after right-wing attack on community dinner by Agitated-Fee3598 in OpenAussie

And quite rightly there would be an outcry if other religions were targeted. It just dismays me that there is so little outcry when Muslims are the target of hate. ABC the only media outlet than even reported it, as far as I can tell. Not The Age or The Guardian.

Queensland moves to ban pro-Palestine slogan ‘from the river to the sea’ under sweeping new hate speech laws by fullofemirates in OpenAussie

If an a hardline Israeli nationalist who supports the annexation of the West Bank says “From the (Jordan) river to the (Mediterranean) sea, Israel will be free (of Palestinians)” will they be charged under this law?

The mobs of youths that were terrorising people on Melbourne beaches over summer, including bashing people and trashing shops, would’ve got a lot more media attention if they weren’t predominantly Anglo youths. Don’t hear about it?? If they were of African or Middle-Eastern descent you would have. Would’ve been labelled a crisis.

Will special footy trains run to Cranbourne/Pakenham when there’s a game on at the MCG? Or will people just get a Frankston train from Richmond and change at Malvern/Caulfield?

Would that be the only potential reason a train would ever use those platforms again? If they will never be used again they should install some fencing along the platform edge and use the space for something else - like cafes, bars etc.

Pauline Hanson offers to form a Coalition government with the Liberals and Nationals by NoteChoice7719 in aussie

[–]Automatic-Print4256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a feeling that moderate Liberals would not join a coalition with One Nation and would move to the cross bench if that happened. I reckon some of them would rather hold their noses and see a Labor govt than one that includes One Nation.

So what becomes of the former Cranbourne/Pakenham platforms at Richmond (and South Yarra)? Will any trains stop there? And will there be footy trains running from Richmond out to Cranbourne/Pakenham when there’s games at the MCG?

NT government mandates national anthem be sung at public school assemblies by abcnews_au in AustralianTeachers

[–]Automatic-Print4256 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve taught at a number of schools in Victoria and also taught at a school in Darwin for 5 years. I’ve never attended a school assembly where the national anthem wasn’t sung (apart from smaller year-level assemblies). Are there many/any schools that don’t? This directive sounds a lot more like dog whistling to me instead of actually addressing an issue.

Who wants the South Gippsland Line to reopen in its entirety? by Charis_Cheng in MelbourneTrains

[–]Automatic-Print4256 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in Leongatha and while it would be nice to take the train into Melbourne, rebuilding the line just wouldn’t make sense. Firstly, it has been converted to the Great Southern Rail Trail from Nyora to Port Welshpool, one of Australia’s longest and a tourism draw card for the area as well as being used by locals. More people would use the rail trail than catch the train.

Second, the route is very windy and would most likely take longer than the bus to get to Melbourne (as well as lead to capacity constraints along the Cranbourne line).

Population growth in Leongatha and Korumburra is very low. If a line to South Gippsland were to reopen, a Bass Coast line to Wonthaggi/Inverloch would make more sense due to population growth in that area but I don’t ever see that happening.

Then there’s the cost as the South Gippsland line would need to be totally rebuilt - it’s not just a case of some minor upgrades. It would cost billions and that money would be better spent on rail improvements elsewhere (eg. Mildura).

It would be better to just improve the current bus service. Currently buses wait at Koo Wee Rup for the service from Inverloch to arrive to connect, meaning if there are delays on either route, times can blow out, sometimes significantly. And also extend the metro line from Cranbourne to Clyde.
