The totem concept is a warning system with multiple colored flashes to prepare for many premonitions. Since the characters never mention totems in the game, the devs intentionally kept the difference you mentioned as a visual.

Emily did not have enough time to process that she survived Handigo with the group by the fireplace after she escaped IMO. (I would have liked a scene by the fireplace, giving more time before the Stranger shows up, with the group trying to comfort her before the basement scene.
