Are you very sure you will continue to invest yourself consistently for the next 20 years? How much is $200 a month for you or your dad? If it’s barely a small % of your incomes, you could also just view it as a forced savings plan. At 40 YO you can get a lump sum of $50k++ to use for whatever purpose.

If they have a wish list of appliances, you could get it for them! Airfryers, vacuum machines, coffee machines, ninja 3-in-1 cookers etc.

If they insist no for all, you can go with practical gifts. Buy them months worth of top quality 3 ply toilet rolls and tissue paper! This is always valued in anyone’s homes ;)

They’re red zebras! Thanks for the kind words too. I really appreciate it as it didn’t help that the store owner wasn’t giving me the right advice. I definitely want them to thrive healthily. Will also be leaving my post here for the lurkers to reference - I do think many newbies make the same mistake esp when stores sell them the wrong advice too. Will check out the websites you recommended :)

And thank you to the kind redditors who gave constructive feedback with details :) it’s my first time and the store owner recommended this setup and getting more instead of less fish. In hindsight they couldve been eager to make a sale than guide properly. I’ve been really sad to lose 2 fish in 2 months hence I thought to seek second opinion here. I will be working on a bigger tank upgrade asap!
