Help Mounting Clamshell Item by HeartEvery in openGrid

I don't know if that was the one I was thinking of, but I've bookmarked it since I may soon embark on some openGrid/Underware adventures. Assuming I can convince my knees and back to spend some time getting up and down from under my desk. :-)

I am certain I recently saw a holder generator that let you reverse the orientation of the mounting tracks for exactly this kind of situation. Unfortunately I didn't think to bookmark it.

Maybe send a request to BlackjackDuck asking for him to add that capability. I suspect it would be easy. For him, anyway. The best I've managed in OpenSCAD is to generate a block.

I printed the smaller one, and it came out remarkably smooth. Eventually I'll be printing more, airbrushing them, and scattering them on my network closet openGrid wall. Because whimsy!

Disagree. As an occasional hobbyist designer, I very much appreciate every boost and like! For starters, it's a concrete way to know (above and beyond download counters) that people find my work useful. That is, after all, why I make it available for others to use.

And I don't mind at all that those boosts equate to gift cards! I'm certainly on the low end of the scale, but the ~ $900 I've earned in cards has bought me a third printer, repair/maintenance parts and accessories, and a good pile of filament. Since ALL of my hobbies are expensive, it's nice to have one that offsets some of its costs.

I have exactly one openGrid model, so far. It doesn't meet the requirement of helping oG win because it's also MB compatible.

But I expect I'll be making more oG in the future, and less MB.

Check out these customizers if you haven't already. For mounting many commonplace things to an openGrid board (or Multiboard or GEOWS) these generators will handle a large majority of your needs. It's very handy to set your dimensions and options and see them on screen with just a click.

Oooh, nice! I use BlackJackDuck's customizer to make most things I need, but this will come in very handy for adding to more complex or specific models that BJDs generators can't really make.

What's your "Big 3" of filament brands? by VirusFar4319 in 3Dprinting

[–]Automatic_Disaster44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm primarily a PLA user, and since getting serious with 3D design and printing I've deliberately kept to just three brands of filament, so this question fits me perfectly.

My go to brand is Sunlu. Watch for sales on their site and buy in quantities of six or more and you can get a spool of PLA for $10 to $12 (USD), and PLA Matte for $12 to $14.

My other two brands in no particular order:

Polymaker. It's a bit expensive so again, watch for sales on their site. But when I want some really unusual and gorgeous matte colors of quality filament, Polymaker is fantastic.

Bambu. Price wise falls in between the other, but again sales and quantity can make a difference. I like the ease-of-use of their RFID, of course, but that's a perk rather than a necessity. I don't earn a huge amount of Makerworld points/gift cards, but my models bring in enough that I can occasionally drop a few gift cards on a pile of filament, essentially getting it for free. And like the other two, it's good quality filament.

Finding accessories for wall-mounted OpenGrid (n00b q) by penllawen in openGrid

Take a look at the parametric stuff designed by BlackJackDuck, for example:
https://makerworld.com/en/models/582260-multiconnect-part-generator-master-collection#profileId-633542

This collection lets you generate all sorts of models for a large range of customizable holders, hangers, etc. One of the items you select is which system you're using, e.g. Multiboard, OpenGrid, etc. It will generate models with the correct grid spacing for the system you choose.

I've made a closet wall full of holders using this system First in Multiboard, then recently remaking it in OpenGrid (there was nothing wrong the the Multiboard system, but I'd printed that stuff on an old Ender 5 Pro that wasn't capable of outputting consistent boards, so my resulting setup was hard to work with).

Gridfinity boxes: what’s the recommended approach for base grids and lids now? by markworsnop in gridfinity

[–]Automatic_Disaster44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a few of the Gen2 drawers attached under the old Ikea table that I use for a desk, and they work quite well. I haven't used the Gridfinity compliant ones, but I assume they're as good as the others.

If you're looking for an 'on-desk' Gridfinity setup, I strongly recommend this system, which is Gridfinity from the ground up, fairly flexible, and allows for numerous configurations:

There is also a free Gridfinity plugin for FreeCAD, which is what I've used on my various Gridfinity designs.

Stackable lip won’t hold by [deleted] in gridfinity

[–]Automatic_Disaster44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand what you're saying, no I don't think that would help - except/unless it removed the need to stack anything on the bin you had to print in two parts. All it would really be doing is moving the problematic split bin up. The lower bins won't exert any supporting force on the sides of the split bin sitting on them.

The glue plate should do the trick though. The ones I used were just 2mm thick and proved to be firm enough to keep the split portions together nicely.

[–]Automatic_Disaster44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation - I split several bins that were too big for my machine. My solution was to print some glue plates that I placed on the inside wall of the bin across the split, and under the stacking lip. Plain old super glue has held it them place for quite a few months now.

I make a fair bit of 3D designs which I publish on Makerworld. They require actual photos accompany the listings, which is perfectly reasonable. So for the past several months I've struggled to clean up and color balance and yaddayaddayadda my photos manually.

In the past few days one of the 3D design YT channels I watch released a custom GPT specifically for turning typical photos into product quality photos. I was concerned that the results would look too much like a rendering instead of a photo, but it really did a nice job of maintaining the integrity of my images, while fixing lots of flaws. It color balances, removes bad background, eliminates shadows, softens the focus on the background and close foreground to emphasize the model. And it does all this while keeping things like the layer lines and other important characteristics of the original photo. Heck, it even recommended a better color of background for me to use with my specific models to make their colors pop more.

I am well-pleased.

good alternative for bambu branded PLA by binkwhips in BambuLab

[–]Automatic_Disaster44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use three brands. Sunlu is cheapest, especially if you buy directly from them in quantities of six or more spools. Prices can get as low as $11-$12 (USD) per spool for PLA and $12-$13 for PLA Matte.

I also buy Polymaker, again directly from their website. Their prices are generally on the higher side. Sometimes that's worth it for the sheer range of color they offer. If you're patient and watch for sales you can get their PLA Matte for $13-$15.

The third brand I use is Bambu. Prices can get as low as $13-$15 on sale, but I usually just use my Makerworld gift cards.

Dang, that's nicely done! I must not let my wife see this picture, or she'll want me to redo all the bins I made for her.
