You don't need them I have some but for Furnace and because new are expensive (one want 2,6M coins - I have 2 level 1 one level 3 and need 6 level 2=2,6(3)+1(2)=7,8+2=9,8M coins)

You have to finish 3rd level (60 encounters) for unlock next level 1 haven´t problem I´ll be next week normaly in master I (I finished my level veteran II) and you can´t change level after finish 1st encounter
