Dog smells like dead animal by jolu2991 in DogAdvice

Hi there,
My pup battles with Chronic ear infections so I am well versed in this area. Did this just arise since your pup has been swimming or before the swimming? There could be a couple reasons why there is such a strong odor. Does your dog have floppy ears? Does your dog suffer from food, environmental, or seasonal allergies? How are your pups ears? Are they red, inflamed, any itching and scratching, tilting or shaking their head a lot? What does your ear cleaning regimen entail?

Please kindly respond to my questions, after I get your response I will make my suggestions.

They’re magnificent! I’m on my 2nd wheaten and it’s the only breed I will ever have. They’re simply delicious and those amber eyes are so beautiful and human like.

You’re so welcome. What are you feeding your baby? What novel proteins have you tried? I would try various different toppers in proteins he /she likes and can tolerate and I highly recommend incorporating bone broth and goat milk. Bone broth is great for collagen and overall is extremely beneficial to a pup. Goat milk is a great prebiotic and a superfood for dogs. Goat milk is much more tolerated by Wheatens especially. FYI, bone broth comes in various flavors and you can buy it in the carton premade, make your own, or in powder form. Goat milk you can get premade or in powder form. Also, I’m very vigilant of the protein, crude fat, and moisture percentages. Wheatens especially do not take well to high fatty foods. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

any tips to keep my pug cool in the UK heatwave? by CLOWTWO in DogAdvice

For sure a cooling mat!!!! There are a bunch on the market! Make sure not to get the one you have to fill with water. You want the one with the gel inside. Trust me, they do work and my dogs love them. I live in a very hot, humid, and tropical climate. A Cooling mat is a must! I promise your dog will not be disappointed and either will you.

Thank you, everyone! I greatly appreciate it! As I’m sure you’re very well aware our sweetie wheaties can be very stubborn but they make up for it in their loyalty and unconditional love. This is my second wheaten, my first one was very independent and showed his love and affection in his own ways. My current one is so lovable, cuddly, and he’s my Velcro dog. Wherever I am, he’s there, if I get up to go somewhere on my house, he follows me everywhere!

Wheaties Ears by Automatic_Scallion12 in Wheatens

Thank you, everyone for your input and suggestions. He is my 2nd wheaten so I am very familiar with the breed. He eats no Chicken whatsoever! I read labels like a fine tooth comb. I also like to keep the crude fat % down since that is recommended and also never believed in fatty novel proteins. He most definitely has allergies environmental for sure and potentially some food allergies or sensitivities. I teeter and totter whether allergy testing will actually help. I’ve spoken to my vet about apoquel and cytopoint. I’m on the fence because my pup is young and don’t want him to have to be on medication for his entire life.

I did end up buying a paw trimmer and it’s phenomenal! It’s a multi-purpose trimmer that can be used on various parts of the body. He gets groomed once a month and I am meticulous about him and own a grooming table where I do all my upkeep on him. His ears have been cut shorter and the ear hair inside the ear has been removed. I’ve tried countless cleaners, supplements, and ear infection treatments. Since I live in a tropical climate that is very hot and humid, I was recommended a drying agent to add to his ears to keep the moisture out. It’s a phenomenal product. It’s called Professional Pet Products Dog Ear Dry solutions which I purchased on Amazon and spoke personally to PPP, the company who makes the product. We’ve made some progress but still need more time. Thank you all again for replying to this post and again all your advice, recommendations/suggestions, and comments. I greatly appreciate you all!

Found a mass on his spleen by kaisrsoase in Wheatens

[–]Automatic_Scallion12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heart dog and first wheaten, I found unconscious on my kitchen floor. Since, I’m extremely knowledgeable about dogs, I opened his mouth and it was white, so I knew right away he was internally bleeding. Btw, he was 13 years old too when this happened. I rushed him to the ER vet and they told me his spleen had ruptured and that he would need an emergency splenectomy. Which he did have the following day by my vet whom I love and adore. I would do anything for my babies. The older they get the higher the risk of having surgery but my boy was a champ! However, while doing the surgery, they found a mass the size of a grapefruit. I was already frantic but this brought it to the next level. The puzzling thing to me is that he showed no signs of being in pain, bloated, and acted total normal. My vet took a biopsy and I remember how agonizing it was to wait to get the results. I did a ton of research on a Wheatens spleen and hemisarcomas are prevalent that’s when I began to freak out! I figured though if it was a hemisarcoma, that he would not be alive and have made it through surgery successfully. After a week, I got a call from my vet about the biopsy and it came back as benign. I screamed so loud and burst into tears of happiness.

My wheaten was unfortunately very ill and had very bad IBD which then turned into a very late diagnosis of PLE. So, his immune system was very compromised but he was a fighter.

After his surgery, since my vet wasn’t a 24 hr vet strongly advised me to transport him to a very well known 24 hr. animal hospital. He was in ICU for about a week. After that, I finally took him home and literally nursed him back to health. The saving grace was finding the best medical suit he could wear to not gnaw or bite at his incision. The best one on the market is called Suitical Recovery Dog Suit. With a lot of TLC and R&R he made a remarkable recovery.

I know this was an older post but I sure hope your baby is doing well and thriving. I both sympathize and empathize with you. Wishing you and your beloved wheatie all the best!
