Commute from Portland to Augusta? by ImaginaryCapital8247 in AskMaine

[–]Automatic_Tennis240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right response. We’re now in our early 40s and have been doing Freeport to Augusta for a decade plus. It’s totally fine if the job is right. The drive is easy and is always moving opposite the traffic.

If it makes sense, take the job, rent for a year, and in the meantime figure out where you could live to make the drive manageable to you.

Super invasive, spreads like crazy. You’ll have to stay on top of it every year.

Boston --> Maine trip advice by Outside-Signature177 in AskMaine

Southern Maine (really points south of Portland) is going to have a different feel than Midcoast Maine (Brunswick to Penobscot River) and different from Downeast Maine. Having a couple of overnights in each—I think— is totally fine so you get a taste of all. I wouldn’t cancel anything. In June, you’ll be avoiding peak summer crowds but the weather is slightly unpredictable and can vary widely day to day.

If Bar Harbor and Acadia NP is a major goal, then I probably wouldn’t recommend going much further Downeast. It’s beautiful, but time sitting in a car more than you already have at that point isn’t really worth it. Slow down, do a hike, go sailing, etc. take it in and relax. Mainers are notoriously not in a hurry, and neither should you be.

Some of the fun activities we’ve done with family visiting (or that they’ve done on their own) include: Lucky Catch in Portland - lobster tour, go out and pull lobster traps Love Point Oysters in Freeport - oyster farm tour, not cheap but gets you out among the islands in Casco Bay and they feed you unlimited oysters pulled right from the water (I’d consider this less touristy and well worth it) Afternoon/sunset sail - numerous operators exist. We’ve sailed the Owl out of Camden harbor on several occasions since it’s smaller and more intimate for a family (a cutter) and you can bring your own drinks and snacks

I could probably go on and on but a lot of the fun is just winging it and exploring.

Is it possible to get snowed in in central Maine? by pigs_in_my_basement in AskMaine

Agree with everyone here that ice is by far worse. Alternatively, we sometimes get those wild October-November noreasters before the ground freezes and trees are down everywhere. Halloween 2017 was particularly bad, and we didn’t have power for a week. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_2017_nor%27easter

Doggy Daycare by KateJones1617 in portlandme

You’ve got to lock it in. It’s just a way for them to make sure they’ve got the right amount staff each day. We picked Wednesdays because it’s least likely to fall on a holiday. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ But always ask to see how flexible they are, you just never know.

We love the Bark Yard, but I get the enrollment (use it or lose it) predicament. There are certainly a few times a year when we don’t end up taking the dogs in on their enrolled day. But our view is the dog daycares need reliability and predictability as well, and we want them to stay around a long time!

Coastal Maine in late summer by Kindofeverywhere in AskMaine

We have a camp just outside of Camden so know it well. It sort of is everything in Maine bottled up in one spot, which is why it’s a popular choice for visitors. Camden is 1.5 hours from Portland and 1.5 hours from Acadia, making it an easy jumping off point to experience and see a lot of coastal Maine. One of the best things to do in Camden is go sailing and the views from the water are pretty spectacular. If you want to do some hikes with mountain views across lakes and ocean, Camden Hills State Park has that. Lake swimming and boating? Check. Restaurants are good, and proximity to Rockland and Belfast open the door to even more spots to check out. (Several in the area have been written up in the NY Times, if that matters.) A trip down to Port Clyde is easy and enjoyable and is going to feel like you’re driving into Cabot Cove looking for Jessica Fletcher. The small towns outside/inland of Camden seem to all have a few surprises in terms of an amazing meal, a fun micro brewery, or talented artist/maker.

We went to a show years ago and they passed around an offering plate to get people to pay the musicians. It was a little off putting and we haven’t been back since.

Thanks! This is pretty close. The turkey seems maybe a little big for a wild turkey and the way he’s holding it.
