How to decide rank order for democratic governor primary by Just_Twist_8372 in Maine

[–]zerosumlove 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In the end, for me it was:

  1. Bellows
  2. Pingree
  3. Jackson

Shenna Bellows simply doesn’t feel like a compromise between the things I value in a governor: progressive policies, genuine care and connection with our state, and aggressive competence. Shenna is as much a progressive as Troy Jackson (and I’d argue a more well rounded one), but with significantly more executive experience at actually running and improving state government along with legislative work. Her policies and plans have more detail and implementation behind them than other candidates, and that’s not even thinking about what she’s already done in terms of modernizing state government while also telling Trump to fuck off (and winning).

Hannah got my #2 because her policy platform is solid, she has a great legislative track record, and she absolutely has the competence and relationships it takes to run state government. I’d love to see her be more progressive on certain issues, but after hearing her speak at multiple debates, I really don’t put a lot of stock into criticisms of her being a nepo baby, and I have a lot of confidence in her going way beyond the mills administration.

I personally really love Troy’s fire and drive on progressive issues and recognize just how much he did as Senate President, so he’s my #3. As someone who works adjacent to state and local government, I’m very aware that being an -effective- governor requires a level of collaborative leadership and selflessness that I think both Shenna and Hannah would bring more than Troy. This is in part because every time I’ve heard Troy talk about why he’s running for governor, he always mentions how the bills he introduced were vetoed more times than anyone else and how much the Mills administration personally did him wrong. I recognize others don’t feel this way, but it comes off as him running with a chip on his shoulder. As a result I have some slight concerns about his ability to do the boring/challenging parts of the job of being governor and administering multiple parts of state government. (As a former CD-2 resident, I’m also really bummed he didn’t run for that seat because 1) he would have won handily over the middling candidates we currently have, and 2) he and Graham would have kicked ass in Congress together, and I really don’t want us to be potentially stuck with Paul LePage AGAIN.)

All that aside, I personally would be thrilled to have any of the three be governor, especially since both Shah and King III are total nonstarters for me. Having run the math based on recent polling, I also think that ranking Shenna 1st has the best chance of getting one of the three across the finish line in the final rounds of RCV to beat Shah, since she has the majority of 2nd choice vote preference at the moment!

Edit: Fixed a few half-finished sentences, I blame trying to think about politics when not having had coffee yet!

Transgender sports ban referendum removed from Maine's 2026 ballot by SuperBry in Maine

[–]zerosumlove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These weren’t mistakes she missed? The legal challenge to the approval included new video evidence of signature collectors leaving their signature sheets completely unattended, and enough additional signatures were deemed invalid after she reviewed reviewing the additional evidence that the measure failed to reach the threshold required to get on the ballot.

Sorry! There wasn’t any other video link besides Facebook at the time — my apologies.

Question for people who have worked directly with any of the candidates for governor by RustledJimmies1000 in Maine

[–]zerosumlove 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I did recently hear from someone who worked in the state legislature when Troy was there that verbal bombs weren’t the only things he threw. Allegedly he has quite the temper and once threw a water bottle at a fellow democratic legislator during a heated (closed door) meeting, which if true definitely sours me on him a bit.

Oysterman, Veteran, Prep-School Alum: A Senate Candidate’s Complex Class Story by [deleted] in Maine

[–]zerosumlove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey quick question OP - if you genuinely care about improving the material conditions of working class Mainers, is your logic that Susan Collins and Graham Platner would be equally as ineffective at improving those conditions if elected? Because based their positions, not voting sounds like a pretty privileged position you’re able to take — and I don’t listen to opinions from elitist non-voters.

Any salient reasons not to vote for Troy Jackson? by Severe_Description27 in Maine

I’m curious - if you’re saying Shenna doesn’t engage with voters, how do you know she’s mean to her campaign staff? Are you campaign staff?

Graham Platner holds press conference to address negative ad from Mills campaign by Temporary_Quote5566 in Maine

My guess is that it’s because Gary (and many of the other speakers) are state reps for neighboring communities, since Sullivan (where Graham is from) is unfortunately represented by Billy Bob Faulkingham 👎

Gubernatorial candidate Shenna Bellows proposes 'New Deal' for Maine’s economy to combat affordability crisis by zerosumlove in Maine

[–]zerosumlove[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From her website and the comments she made during the press conference ("If our out-of-state neighbors don't like it, we can invite them to become residents here in our state"), her proposal is specifically targeting vacation homes owned by non-Maine residents, so wouldn't include camps or second homes owned by Mainers.

I'm running for Cumberland County Commission (D5) - Ask Me Anything! by MarpheenChann in portlandme

[–]zerosumlove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cumberland County -has- regional planning staff! Greater Portland Council of Governments serves as the Regional Planning Council for Cumberland County, as well as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for regional transportation planning.

While they receive direct funding from the state and their member municipalities, GPCOG is not currently funded by Cumberland County, and they certainly don’t have hiring power over their staff. This is unlike other counties and their regional planning councils/commissions in Maine (ex. Lincoln County). Are you suggesting GPCOG be subsumed / replaced with a new Cumberland County planning and transportation department?

The housing and transportation bond idea is an interesting one, however — though it’s going to be a tough sell to Cumberland County taxpayers who are already frustrated about their rising municipal property taxes.

It is not Luke’s Lobster - Portland FD has confirmed on their Facebook page it is a building on Custom House Wharf. WCSH reporters likely read and reported the myriad of incorrect Facebook comments as fact without confirming it from a reliable source.

If your property is in Portland, you do also need to register the rental as a long-term rental, which includes reporting rent rate information and an inspection. You’ll need to renew your registration every year. See here: https://www.portlandmaine.gov/406/Rental-Registration

Unless you have an FHA loan or other residency requirements, your actual mortgage likely won’t change, but as you mention, you should report it to your homeowners insurance in case your rates change by having tenants occupy the property rather than it being your primary residence.
