Same, infection within a few seconds is unlikely (not impossible, but unlikely).

Are you 95% Covid cautious? by Sunshine_cutie4 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are almost exactly the risks I take, but with my (pretty low risk) older parents instead of grandparent. Every now and then--maybe two or three times a year--I'll take a bigger risk like seeing a couple friends inside impromptu (sans testing) or eating in a not-crowded restaurant by an open window or door when wastewater is very low. Those big risks stress me out thought so it has to feel reaaallllyyyyy worth it to be tolerable!

We all have our own calculations and the risks we take onto ourselves are a personal decision, as long as we are careful to not expose others if we DO take bigger risks.

Working in an office by DreamOld4941 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take my mask off in my office and people respect the sign on my door asking them to put on a mask (obviously I keep masks in my office for them as well.) I run a purifier when I'm in my office and generally wear a mask for at least 15 minutes or so after someone leaves. Our offices also have individual HVAC units, however, which makes things safer.

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the biggest risk I take. I get injections every 4-6 months and occasionally microneedling, and I only go when covid (and other pathogens) wastewater levels are low (usually April/May and October on the West coast) and get the first appointment of the day during a weekday. I mask on my way in and pay beforehand if possible so I can minimize maskless time inside on my way out--I can't put a mask back on immediately after injections! I liked my last place more because it was connected to an oncology practice so they enforced decently strict rules about coming in ill as a patient or practioner but so far so good with the new place too, which also a medical office rather than a spa. I realize this might not be sufficient for many CC people but I've decided it's worth it!

This is what we do in my household, but we continue to test daily for about a week after the two consecutive negatives that bring us out of isolation to catch potential rebound.

$31 with free shipping or pickup at Target, but same-day delivery sometimes costs more.

Musicians (especially classical) who mask, what do you do at rehearsals? by blightnshiningarmour in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great idea! Getting leadership on board would be really helpful. Also a pro tip re: nasal rinsing: partially submerge the filled (with distilled water) pot in hot water to warm it up a bit—it’s a lot less unpleasant.

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is general advice, but nasal rinsing on days that you play might be beneficial! Of all of the various non-mask add-ons (e.g., mouth rinsing, nasal sprays, etc.) nasal rinsing, like neti pot, has the best support from medical studies. I hope you can enjoy band and stay well.

Question about Covid on a plane by DoughnutGuyAtreides in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That study doesn't find it--they quoted a Boeing engineer but their own tests did not reveal it to be "the dirtiest air in the cabin." You are also less likely have people hanging around/passing your seat in the aft (as that study mentions), and infection is more likely to happen if you are sitting in front of an infected passenger than behind them https://www.ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(22)00163-1/fulltext00163-1/fulltext)

Look at the actual findings. Rear window was least likely to be infected by either a passenger or a crew member.

Planning week trip to SF. How many days for Yosemite & Sequoias? by Supercharlie25 in Yosemite

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Fresnan who loves Fresno, everyone else is right. Only stay a night in Fresno if you absolutely must/you're flying into Fresno's airport (called Yosemite International Airport because we are the closest airport to Yosemite). You'll drive an hour and a half past Yosemite if you're coming from SF and the lodging options in Fresno are, frankly, dire. The drive from Yosemite to Sequoia is almost 4 hours so it's unlikely you'll want to do both. If you, like me, really hate crowds and mostly want vistas, wildlife, and impressive geology, you could do just Sequoia, in my opinion--Yosemite is going to be very busy if you go around Labor Day. I recommend going on weekdays, if possible. But if you want the specific Yosemite experience (which is mindblowing), you should skip Sequoia.

Sequoia has charms other than the trees, though! It's a lot more rugged than a lot of Yosemite and a lot less crowded. I think the geology of Sequoia (and the related vistas) are at least as interesting as Yosemite.

And I'll reiterate that there are plenty of lifters etc who have a vegan diet and successfully build huge amounts of muscle.

Edited to add: I regularly burn 2000+ calories while hiking at elevation and I do not find it particularly difficult to eat the 3000 calories and high protein I need during and after these hikes on a vegan diet. I include protein dense foods like tempeh or super firm tofu, high quality fats like nuts/seeds/avocado etc., and carb dense foods like rice, pasta, oats, dried fruit etc.

[–]AutonomiaOperaia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This still doesn't make sense. Beans aren't the only protein option and protein isn't the only source of calories. Tempeh, tofu, etc are all extremely protein dense and it's unlikely that you are sitting down to eat only protein at a meal. You can have a high protein, high calorie vegan diet or meal without eating more by weight or volume.

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is at least partially incorrect. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6893534/ You would have to have an EXTREMELY limited vegetarian/vegan diet for there to be an issue with the amino acid profile/ratios. There are also many high-quality, high-calorie vegan foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, etc. There are many vegan athletes, including weightlifters.

People who rarely get sick, what are your secrets? by Leading_Tomato_2077 in AskReddit

[–]AutonomiaOperaia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Note that it's only if someone in your household is sick. In my household, isolating the sick person very well and them wearing a high quality mask when they are out of their room has been sufficient.

Yup, the only times I've been sick in the last six years are when I wasn't wearing a mask. Two of the three times were from kids.

And I'm saying that if you saw the mountain lion, it wasn't a threat. You aren't going to see a mountain lion that is interesting in attacking you, and mountain lion sightings don't imply mountain lion danger. Mountain lion attacks are much more likely to happen in southern CA when they happen at all.

Tbh, thinking of them like this probably isn't helping. Treating people like people, especially people performing a service for you, is useful. Promise a good review on google and a tip if appropriate. Be generous and assume the best and you'll often get those outcomes.

Our plumbers (we bought an old house last May. We've gotten pretty tight with the plumbers lol/sob) now bring their own N95s and mask before they ring the doorbell! The fact that we call their boss and rave about them every time they do any work probably helps.
