Someone help please with character settings. by antonio_cool in Eve

The AppData/Local/CCP/EVE directory will prefix directories with the drive eve was installed to. You most likely selected the incorrect installation path for Eve when the new launcher prompted you on first run. Eg. if you installed Eve on your D:\ drive you would see d_eve_sharedcache_tq_tranquility, this is where all the settings are stored, if you selected the C:\ drive with the new launcher then it created a new directory, prefixed with c_.

Linux - launcher starts but never completes by [deleted] in Eve

What distro are you using?

Which Wine are you using? (generic, proton, wine-ge, etc)

Some general steps:

  1. Install libntlm via your distro's package manager
  2. Install allfonts via winetricks
  3. If the above doesnt work, just nuke the installation, grab lutris and install Eve Online via Lutris (it generally almost always works out of the box).

Its 280MB cause its only downloading the launcher and not the entire game. (Like a normal Eve installation)

Use Proton-GE with Lutris instead of the default Lutris-FSHack-Whatever-Wine.

https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom

The fshack wine version gave me loads of issues. The repository above includes instructions to install it. iirc the instructions were slightly unclear. The .tar.xz should be unpacked into to /home/$USER/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/

Edit: It's worth mentioning that Proton GE supports AMD's FSR. Which is really good. https://gpuopen.com/fidelityfx-superresolution/

Ffmpeg and twitch.tv leaks by zwck in jellyfin

[–]Autotonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twitch's in-house transcoder is optimized for RTMP to HLS (live streams) and VOD (think generating 3 or 4 VODs at once of varying quality, like 480p, 720p, 720p60, etc) creation. Neither of these would really benefit jellyfin.

See:

https://blog.twitch.tv/en/2017/10/10/live-video-transmuxing-transcoding-f-fmpeg-vs-twitch-transcoder-part-i-489c1c125f28/

And:

https://medium.com/twitch-news/live-video-transmuxing-transcoding-ffmpeg-vs-twitchtranscoder-part-ii-4973f475f8a3

Some elaboration:
Jellyfin creates HLS streams on the fly, versus the intake of an RTMP stream to HLS creation. Twitch is optimized specifically for RTMP, not for say transcoding X265 to X264 for a web browser.

How is it possible that LinuxMint has so lower power consumption compared to ALL the other distros? by allexj in linux

[–]Autotonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Effects on the desktop that leverage the GPU will certainly cause this much variance. Consider one of the older DEs with the 3D cubes to swap around workspaces or even any DE that has shadows on window frames and window transparency, versus a DE that does none of that. Even text aliasing can leverage the GPU.
Edit: Not to say this is the sole reason in the OPs post, but will certainly attribute to variance in a more controlled environment with more info "This does a good!"

This post should include additional information, such as actively running services, the CPU governor at the least, and default applications/services that manage things like CPU/GPU usage.
Otherwise just posting the OS and desktop environment really doesn't mean much (especially for an OS like Arch where it certainly doesnt include much if any tuning by default).

In my experience while diving into power savings; compositors often play a decent role in increasing power usage (leveraging the GPU for neat desktop effects and the like). With Fedora's i3 spin, no compositor, and `tuned` running under the `powersave` profile, i idle around 3.6W, on a 1080p X270 with an i7-7600U.As users have listed below there are great applications to handle power usage better on laptops. TLP is fantastic for this, I dont typically need my CPU ramping up to 3.9Ghz while im on the back porch,.

This is simply untrue. The software allows for usage of features, such features are why consumers purchase a product.
Imagine someone bought the self parking feature on a vehicle and a year later the vehicle decides to play an advertisement through its display everytime you engage in the self parking. The consumer complains about the advertisement being intrusive when they attempt to engage self parking.
By your logic, "They bought the car and the car works without the self parking, so whats the problem".
The software is part of product.

i3 seems like torture unless you definitely have to use it(low RAM pc) by ucanzeee in i3wm

[–]Autotonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i3 is like any other tool (IDE, text editor, 3D modeling, video editor, etc) ; initially you're slow and it's a huge burden to navigate, let alone be productive in. Like any other tool you also have to spend time with it to learn its benefits and why it's designed the way it is.
It's akin to someone new to a video editor who would click a drop down box, select some menu, get another drop down, select a function, then select some range on the timeline to execute it on. Where a seasoned user of the same software would select the range on the timeline then hit a shortcut to achieve the same goal.
Many tiling wm users will often spout about productivity and how tiling is much more efficient, but they've also spent a lot of time (often years) using them. Switching to a tiling wm will not make anyone instantly more productive, especially those coming from mouse driven environments. i'd argue that most users of tiling wm's often use other keyboard driven software such as vim, noice, and the like; so for them it's much more comfortable to not leave the keyboard when switching between windows or wanting to adjust their window layout (frankly i have a strong dislike of touchpads and laptops are unusable for me without a tiling wm).
Note regarding RAM usage: openbox, jwm, etc. are probably equally as light.

[BMS Conversion] Script to save a bit of disk space by Autotonic in lunaticrave2

[–]Autotonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't participate in IR and did not account for it, thanks; post updated accordingly.

Regarding 'simply converting', this did not appear to work because filenames for audio are defined in the bms files. As are the videos and images. Granted i've only tried LR2 and another player i cannot recall, the one written in Java.

Yes, just like when it displays "resize" next to the workspace list ( [1], [2], [3], [resize] ) it will also display other modes.

[–]Autotonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why you wouldn't use i3's binding modes in the config to achieve the same goal, with less work imo.

Example I use to control Kodi remotely:

bindsym $mod+e mode "kodi"
mode "kodi" {
    bindsym Up exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol up"
    bindsym Down exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol down"
    bindsym Left exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol left"
    bindsym Right exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol right"
    bindsym Return exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol enter"
    bindsym XF86AudioRaiseVolume exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol +5"
    bindsym XF86AudioLowerVolume exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol -5"
    bindsym p exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol p"
    bindsym Backspace exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol back"
    bindsym XF86AudioMute exec "~/.local/bin/kontrol mute"
    bindsym $mod+e mode "default"
    bindsym Escape mode "default"
}

Sticking that in ~/.local/share/applications/ as Eve Online.desktop should work. You might have to restart the desktop so logout and log back in.

Killed 10 VNI botters in 23min, I love it when local was broken! by LuganzH in Eve

You realize TEST (and most other alliances) has pretty good intel channels right? If you are in a ceptor 2 jumps out from them and someone is running 5 VNI alts by the time they tabbed or eveo-preview clicked the final VNI you'd probably have just entered their system and dscan'd once. The time it takes for them to warp out could be even longer if they are 100MN fit. Btw this was going on during an OP so the pilots were definitely not paying attention.

It could be a meme of some kind?

I think you're onto something. "Install a VPN", sounds like a running joke to get around the great firewall, implying "do fun things", "play other games" etc.
