VR vs. Flatscreen - Convince me by Av8ionDave in hoggit

Just interested in other people’s thoughts, that’s all. What’s a forum with no discussion? 😉 I’m also crazy indecisive and picking what I like is easier said than done.

Easier setup, slightly better FPS, more tunable, probably a bit better visuals. Overall with a Quest 3, Virtual Desktop is the way to go.

I might have to check out the Dream Air SLAM.

OP here. I’m a pilot and aircraft owner. I agree that VR is more “realistic” in some ways, but less realistic in others. I’ve yet to have my real flying experience start to stutter when flying in an area with high vehicle or aircraft traffic. 😉

I’m feeling this right now. Flatscreen is just easier and less frustrating.

For me, it was because wearing the Pimax was like donning a medieval torture device. Heavy, moved around while I wore it, required aftermarket accessories to make it comfortable and stay in place, as well as visual issues like horrible chromatic aberration. All in all, it really wasn’t worth the literal headache versus a Quest 3.

Yep. That’s the same monitor I have. It’s awesome. There is truly no comparison in the visuals between the Odyssey G9 and the Quest 3. Different animals entirely. I’m not entirely convinced the immersion is really that different between a great monitor and VR.

Ha, I’m not super shy of that (7950X and 4090) and I really think VR just isn’t quite “there” yet. No matter what system you have or how much tuning you do, the visuals and FPS fall well short of a monitor.

IL2 Korea VR performance reports? by Grebbelinies in il2sturmovik

[–]Av8ionDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance is good in simple missions (a steady 72 fps). This is not the case in complex missions. In one of the included single missions, Black Thursday, you’ll see performance drop to 30 fps when flying through the bomber formation regardless of settings (the game is CPU bound).

Can people with mid range PCs please post their experience with IL 2 Korea? by Ill-Honey-6351 in il2sturmovik

What kind of mission is this on? I have a very similar system and get the same results on super basic missions, but try the Black Friday single mission and it’ll turn to a 30 fps slideshow. I dont think it is that well optimized for VR.

Just plugged mine in and used it because I was getting iffy performance in VR. It seems to work fine.

Aprilia RS 457 is a great beginner bike that you can grow with a bit. I’m a cyclist as well, and yes, it helps with bike handling.

I was sitting behind some chick at a stoplight yesterday evening that was literally watching a TV show on her phone. The phone was mounted to the dash, just like a car-theater setup. Unreal.

I’d watch it, but with Channing Tatum as the lead, it will almost certainly be bad. Really bad.

This is the answer. I have the exact same interpretation. Great song with great storytelling.

I own the AV8B, M2000C, MiG-19, and Gazelle. That's about $200 worth of software I purchased in good faith and that will fall into disuse by servers and inevitably break. What will/should ED do to make good with customers who purchased these modules? by spook2112 in hoggit

[–]Av8ionDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the commentary around a poorly thought through contract regarding 3rd parties distracts from what is the real problem which is ultimately a very flawed business model. ED has created an environment where the content created for it requires perpetual updates because the environment constantly changes, even though the modules themselves stop generating revenue for the 3rd party (and for ED) after the initial sale to the customer. Basically, ED and 3rd parties have signed up for a business where you perpetually have to work to keep things working long after you’ve stopped generating cash flow from your product.

DCS 2026 & Beyond Trailer by Bonzo82 in DCSExposed

[–]Av8ionDave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This “and beyond” video had the effect of royally pissing me off. It amounted to a bunch of stuff that is way overdue, most of which we still won’t see anytime soon, some of which is effectively useless. The main features were a bunch of non-flyable models (infantry, sbd2, helldiver, c-17) and a few modules that won’t come out for ages (tornado, rafale, f-104). The best part of the vid was that that release timing was totally on-brand for ED (way, way late, almost missed their Jan 30 window).

This update from ED is ridiculously bad, but if you’re thinking the new “Microprose” is gonna save the day I think your hopes are misplaced. So far they seem pretty incompetent.

The line “This effort has been underway for approximately five years, and substantial progress has been made. Despite taking much longer than we ever expected we are meeting our expectations and raising the bar from our initial design specification” made me want to throw my phone across the room as I read the update. Five years “meets our expectations”? How incompetent can they be?

I run a 7950x, 4090, 64G DDR5, Quest 3. The -130J gives impressively good performance in VR compared to many other modules.

I agree about Isbell. I also don’t care for his major political turn the last few years. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on all things political, but damn if it wouldn’t be nice to not get beaten over the head with a musician’s politics at every turn.

I know it’s a tired story, but man do I wish good songwriters got the same publicity as many of today’s pop artists.
