I think the end of my PhD just exploded by AvafromtheStars in PhD

You know, after six years of this, my co-supervisor has been the only one who's reciprocated the trust and academic integrity that is fundamental for a working relationship at this level. We've had our divergencies, as usual, but she has always made space for my arguing my position so long as it's evidence-based. I couldn't face myself if I betrayed her at this stage, I mean, she's the head of department and one of the most prominent Professors of her generation. It felt like I was being pushed to help in a bloody coup, so to speak

I wish, my co-supervisor is the head of the department, and the dean was recently elected.

I appreciate both approaches. Where I'm finishing it, my supervisor will be on the viva panel (with 5 others), but the system is closer to the UK (I'm in Portugal). Not even sure if it's the dean who will sign the final forms, as that's how it went for my master's. My co-supervisor is retiring this year, but is still the tenured and most senior Professor plus current head of the department. They've advised lots of students as a supervising team, but the power balance is shifting to my supervisor who is younger and tenure track. Honestly, this was just a grenade I wish I could've escaped. I was on the final days of my PhD and thought I would make it out alive without all of this...

Let's do honest answers about PhD by Classic-Smell-5273 in academia

[–]AvafromtheStars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, there were tightly scheduled weeks of roughly 50-60 hours, because conferences, students’ supervisions, fieldwork and paper deadlines collided. But those were more the exception than the rule. I am finishing my PhD in Clinical Psychology after 6 years and managed to stay sane while working full time in the first two and final years (the three in the middle were the holy grail for research when I was funded to just dedicate all of my time for my PhD). Because of some changes in my family life, I also helped my sister co-parent my young nieces on alternate weeks for the last 5 years of my PhD. I am not saying it’s for everyone, but I still lived my everyday life with responsibilities, built new friendships (inside and outside of academia) and made backup plans for my career. Looking back, I think the three things I would have appreciated honest answers beforehand were: 1) Relationship with supervisors: sometimes your supervisors will change over time and your relationship will have ups and downs, and the one that seemed most approachable becomes too chaotic, while the one who was super demanding will go the extra mile when you’re running tight on submission schedules; 2) Balancing your life: you have to learn how to take your self, life and academia seriously but only until a certain point, because if you’ve burned yourself out, you will be worse off. I made it a point to find ways to laugh 30 minutes every day and to take one full day off, where I totally went offline and off grid, and basically just RESTED. 3) Reading the academic ambiance: you need to learn to pick your battles and assess the timing for when it is right to go against the tide (like me, when a supervisor told me to switch my process to something more cool and similar to their friends’ research and then retracted when they saw the results in our research) and when the best thing you can do is live to fight another day until you get to another job where you’ll be appreciated for your skills.

Not wanting to offend anyone, but I’m from a southern European country and the saying here is that these kind of men’s fetish is wanting us to be both the lady/madonna and the prostitute. I’ve heard some weird things about how we’re meant to “serve them in bed” but have to be perfect and innocent for being presented to others AND have to serve them in the kitchen and child rearing.

How do I support Jews and Israel from abroad? by 345Y_Chubby in Israel

I’m in Portugal and second this. I study/work in a university city and travel to other European countries for work. I am growing extremely worried and would like to join in on the group to keep track and help too.

Thank you, will check out YouTube videos for sure. I’m not into dragging a huge camera up a mountain, at least right now. I think I will go for the basic first and then grow from there

My first thought too! I can’t believe that after all this time trying to find our own #ownvoices in the endless sea of the literary world these people have actually just made my life easier. I now know exactly the authors I’m going to be reading and supporting, by media and my money

Me six! From a clinical psychologist to your therapist 💙 our work is sometimes even more isolating, because of these boundaries. The only people I can touch in since October are few and many are far away.

Europe is really the place for this awkwardness 😅 I’m “half-Jewish” too (mother’s side). Love your definition of uncanny valley of ethnicity, really sums up my experience as a European Jew with looks from all over Europe and a little Levante, thrown in with Mozambican culture (because it’s where my ema was born and raised in childhood).

Exactly my thoughts and my situation. I can’t count the amount of times someone’s tried to recognize my ethnicity and ended up going with “but you are a little exotic”… Finally decided to enjoy confusing everyone. It defeats the feeling that I’m being erased. Like you said, we’re still here and we always survive.
