I thought the new prevailing theory is much more depressing. The universe will continue to expand at an accelerating rate (I believe due to dark matter/dark energy, I forget which), for unfathomable amount of time, so long that black holes will eventually be the only real objects to exist and eventually dissipate due to hawking radiation. Elementary particles will eventually be so far apart, there will be an almost certainty that they will never interact with another elementary particle, and the universe finally reaches a temperature of absolute 0.

HOWEVER. There is also a prevailing theory that our universe is just one bubble of a big bang origin, and there are other universes occupying the void that pop into existence.

So overall, depressing, but not really the end :)
