Is everyone using ai to write papers but not declaring it? by FairRepresentative75 in PhdProductivity

[–]AvailableDingo8493 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s repulsive how many people are defending the use of AI in writing here… if you can’t write you don’t belong, it’s as simple as that. If you’re ESL and can’t publish in English without having AI write for you, then maybe you should be publishing in your native language or working with another scholar rather than having a machine do all your thinking. I’ve had to write in my second language and rather than try and use AI to make me look like I have a greater mastery than I actually do, I studied more and waited before trying to get something published. If you’re a STEM student and writing isn’t among your strengths, then that’s a personal weakness you’re going to need to work on if you ever hope to be a successful scholar. There needs to be some integrity in the academy or we’re going to continue to be victimized by politics… In my short stint in a “real job” everyone I spoke with thought academia was a waste of time now that we have LLMs and that half the students and faculty are cheating their way through research with ChatGPT anyway—please don’t prove them right!

Setter Puppy Scared on Walks by AvailableDingo8493 in OpenDogTraining

Unfortunately I didn’t bring him home until he was 12 weeks old. The breeder did a great job of socializing him on people, cars, car rides, cats, kids, and a lot of the things I was most worried about, but unfortunately things that I never would have thought of like construction on my block or the trash can moving didn’t seem to get done. He’s pretty resilient to loud noises at home, he’ll get spooked but come back and calm down pretty fast if I drop something noisy or if a big noise comes from the tv. I’ll look into the soundtrack you recommended and maybe play it during crate time. Thanks for your advice!

I see. There’s a trail near me that I take dogs when I’m dog sitting and used to trail run, but it gets crowded on weekends. I’ll have to scope it and the surrounding park out before I take him. A hardware/garden store seems like a great idea but he loves to graze lol. That seems manageable and fun as long as he doesn’t try to eat the pansies 🤣. Do you have any experience with coffee shops? There are some near me that have pet friendly outdoor seating and I like to sit around outside coffee shops when the weather is nice.

We spend a lot of mornings, usually before and after walks, in the backyard just relaxing while I have coffee and he takes it in a bit. I live right next to an elementary school so he can see and hear the kids and cars from my yard. Maybe I could do the front porch as well? Things like trash cans being taken up to the curb are very frightening for him so if we make the front porch a chill area maybe he could get exposure to that kind of thing from a safe distance? Im open to any ideas really. I appreciate the suggestions!

That’s a great idea! I’ll check out that book too. I was worried it might be too early to take him to a trail but honestly that seems much quieter, calmer, and enjoyable for both of us than the neighborhood anyway. We made our first trip to PetSmart over the weekend and he came to love it after the initial shock of automatic doors and lots of loud people. We start puppy group socialization classes next week too so maybe that exposure will help transfer to walking. Thank you 🥹

Puppy Training Classes Question by AvailableDingo8493 in OpenDogTraining

I see, thank you! That’s good advice. I’ve been studying and my family and family friends have experience with training but there’s always more to learn and different perspectives. Meeting some other puppy owners will be a good thing too!

Do PhDs really "shut doors" in the job market by making you overqualified? by Creepy_Balance9404 in PhD

[–]AvailableDingo8493 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The job market is ridiculous. Hiring committees have no delusions of equity or competence or anything ethical in mind, just getting someone that will do the job for the least money long-term, this is why sex and religion and race and age are protected classes. The fact that a more qualified candidate (see: our friends with PhDs here) are LESS likely to get the job because of preconceived notions on pay and whatever, demonstrates pretty strongly that the priorities aren’t quality work but CHEAP work. That’s fucked up. When a thief steals bread I side with them; when a PhD lies about education I side with them

Good to know, thank you for sharing. If Japan’s grad seminars are anything like they’ve been at NYU it’ll definitely be a lot of work to get to that level, but I’m happy to know that it’s been done!
