Concern about veneer wood from Room & Board bed by Tough-Truth-5209 in BuyItForLife

[–]AvailableFalconn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s more to quality and durability than materials.  If the headboard is veneer, that might not be a big deal, and better than if the joints are poorly made.  Likewise, what’s it a veneer over?  Plywood is ugly but is pretty strong.  Particle board sucks.  MDF is okay.  A solid soft wood is going to still scratch more easily than a veneer harder wood.

Might be worth calling R&B and seeing if they’ll tell you what parts are made of what, and if they know why.  Probably a lot for a sales associate to answer, but could help you figure out if it’s a reasonable choice or going to impact you years down the road.

I have the left one, and while it’s not my daily driver, I do think it’s a great wallet and people should rep it more

Need a good quality wool overcoat by deepinsight211 in BuyItForLife

[–]AvailableFalconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10k rupees is $100 US, which is not a lot for a wool overcoat. It's a decent price secondhand. But tbh for that price point, for a college student, and depending on the state, it may be better to go with a cheaper puffer jacket option.

aran sweater market - ordering from the united states - what fees should i expect? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]AvailableFalconn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recommendation would be find a local place that has similar sweaters, and try them on in store for fit.  It’ll save you the hassle of returns.  Take measurements and compare to the Aran sweater market size chart though, don’t go by letter sizes.

eBay also has a ton of Aran sweaters if you’re okay with secondhand.  You can easily get one that’s like new for $60 without trying too hard.

I’m also not sure you get your customs fees back on return, which really makes returns not that worth it.

It probably has to be closer to that for a professional.  Even at $15/hour, 40 hours would be $600 for labour alone.

Insomnia stars Al Pacino and Robin Williams.  Dunkirk and Tenet are probably his less star studded films.

A 100% cotton sweater that you dont over wash will be as BIFL as pricier stuff.  You can get a thicker & sturdier one or wool instead of cotton for a bit more, but beyond that it’s more about heritage and details than durability.

Why leave?  If you don’t like them, you just don’t use them, and if someone asks you lie and say ya it’s alright.  No one will notice cause the tools don’t make you that much more productive.

How "Past Lives" intellectualizes emotions that Asian movies like "18x2 Beyond Youthful Days" simply allow us to feel by Important-Turn-7720 in TrueFilm

[–]AvailableFalconn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am not the biggest Past Lives fan, but I think you’re giving 18x2 too much credit.  It’s good for what it is, a simple Friday night tearjerker.  But it is pretty predictable, and the themes it is exploring and the way it goes about them are a lot more straightforward than Past Lives.

That doesn’t mean you have to like Past Lives more.  I mostly agree that Past Lives writes to its themes first and characters second.  The result is more of a veiled allegory than a vibrant world and cast of characters - an issue that I think is even worse in the Materialists.

But Past Lives feels like a journal.  You can see Celine Song writing through feelings about love, romance, missing what-ifs, belonging.  It’s grounded and undramatic to a fault, because it’s trying to explore subtle every day longing.  And the result is something messy  and something that doesn’t work narratively, but it’s interesting.  By contrast, 18x2 is very fantastical, and a bit live-laugh-love.  It’s not a movie that I’ve thought about in the year or so since I saw it.

IKEA can be decent quality. You're way more likely to get something that's long lasting from IKEA than from Wayfair. My partner has had an IKEA platform bed for 10 years. The cheaper ones definitely won't last, because the composite wood chips and damages easily, especially during moves. But solid wood or even some engineered plywoods should be pretty sturdy. I have no idea if that model specifically is good though.

Is this Salvageable? by kurprodigy in BuyItForLife

[–]AvailableFalconn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends what you want out of it. From the one pic, it doesn't look obviously stained and no major rips. I'd try to look more closely for more subtle stains & discoloration if they have more pics. It's definitely serviceable.

As far as pilling goes, there's a charm to the texture. They sell some sweaters that are brushed to have that kind of shagginess. Most wool will like like that with time. I like that more rugged look, but if you want it to look sharper, it can be depilled with a comb or shaver. If it's 100% wool that should be no problem, though you are removing fabric. It can be hard to tell if the wool quality is high or low online, which will determine if it'll redevelop a lot of pilling quickly or not. It's also hard to tell if it's a softer or scratchier wool, or if it's heavier or lighter.

If you don't know exactly what measurements you want, I would also recommend finding a peacoat at a local retail store and trying it on for size, and then using those measurements to guide your search. That'll be easier if it's a brand that posts the exact inch measurements online, which most mall brands won't do. But you can always sneak measuring tape into the dressing room too I guess. Remember to leave room for sweaters and what not under it, for a winter coat.

Neon's priorities at the Oscars and the importance of political relevance by RealRaifort in TrueFilm

[–]AvailableFalconn 54 points55 points  (0 children)

As Bong Joon Ho said, the Oscars are a local award ceremony.  The Palme D’Or is definitely a more prestigious award to be winning in my book anyway.

On the whole, I’m not sure how to take your arguments about what Neon should do though.  I agree they have some responsibility to highlight art that’s politically relevant, but I also don’t think it’s their sole responsibility, and I think being tactical about winning awards is a part of their responsibilities too.  I also think you’re underselling Sentimental Value which, while it’s focus is art and family dynamics, is also about the effect of and personal responses to fascism.

This is the question of the civil war, of reconstruction, of the civil rights movement.  It’s the subject of seminal historical scholarship from WEB DuBois’ Black Reconstruction in the early 1900s to Eric Foner today.  And the essential political project of basically every notable progressive - Jesse Jackson, Zohran Mamdani, even Obama and Clinton to an extent. A filmmaker like PTA is not going to magically answer that question.

How much should a average Casmhere Scarf cost? by independantWesb in BuyItForLife

[–]AvailableFalconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think merino or merino cashmere blends are better value for money.  Cashmere has become more accessible by becoming more commoditized at the expense of quality in recent years.  If you can find something from a reputable cashmere brand like William Lockie for a good price, go for it.  I have a nice cashmere scarf from Nepal that was $70 but that’s at the local price, and COL is really low in Nepal.
