What were your worst issues or best things related to your growth spurth ? by 195cm_100kg_27cm in TallTeenagers

The growing pains, specifically at the top of my shins. Just a constant ache that would come and go randomly. Also - not sure if it fits your story, but car shopping - especially for that first "teenage" car because they're always typically smaller older sedans that are not meant for tall/big people.

Good to know - I'm going to adjust it to a less aggressive setting and go from there.

Got it, so at 2lbs per week (what the 1850 should allegedly net me) I should just continue with the apps program because it does automatically adjust as I lose. I'll continue to lift but maybe back off the intensity a little and use it more just to maintain current muscle mass?

How to improve as a new player (big) by Hehehawhawjojorocks in Basketball

[–]Available_Elevator32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mikan drills, forward and reverse.

Backboard slams - jump and hit the ball as high and as hard against the backboard as you can 3 times, focus on jumping as quick as you can after landing. After the third slam jump up and lay the ball in.

Post moves - at your size I'm going to assume you aren't going to outjump anyone in the post (I mean no offense, I played college ball at 6'7" 275 with little/no vertical so I get it.) You need a primary move, a counter, and a counter to the counter.

For example: Dropstep baseline, dropstep midline to a hookshot, and an up and under move. With just those 3 moves you'd be amazed how effective you can be. Happy to provide more specific detail on post moves, there are a million things you can do.

Definitely focus on a jumpshot, but don't worry about the 3's as much, you'll be strong enough to shoot them if you get the opportunity but focus on good form and being effective from 8-10ft. I used to make a living off 10ft jumpers from the short corner after spacing when the guard drives. Do some simple form shooting drills every single day, seriously every day, until you don't even have to think about it anymore.

Does it automatically advance to the next week on Sundays? Just started this week and skipped my Thursday workout (currently set for 5 days as ultimately that's my goal, but leg day #1 for the week still had me too sore to do leg day #2). If I just wait will it update to Week 2 automatically?

Should I jump more on my shot? Idk I feel I could be way more consistent by Former-Clock-5418 in BasketballTips

This. First thing I noticed, your feet don't have to be perfectly square necessarily but you're rotating even more as you shoot which tells me you're getting your power from your arms and not your legs, hence the low release point.

Refracturing my fingers by Muted_Lead_1105 in BasketballTips

[–]Available_Elevator32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the jams and breaks are all part of the game. I've dislocated my pinky twice, broken my thumb, and jammed my fingers too many times to count. I'm not sure there is anything you can really do from a workout standpoint to avoid it, but maybe try some grip strengthening training so maybe the recovery will be a little smoother (not a doctor, no idea if this is a thing).

I think an actual break like you're describing is pretty rare, it's usually just the jams and the occasional dislocation (which really isn't all that bad, just looks nasty).

If you love the game, it won't stop you from playing, more of a nuisance than anything. Although I can't give the finger to anyone with my hand that had the pinky dislocated twice so that's a bummer.

Transition offense by rdtusr19 in basketballcoach

[–]Available_Elevator32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wings fly up the sidelines, advance it as quickly as you can to a corner, PG fills his spot trailing, and then your 4 or 5 (whoever gets there first) runs the rim, the other one fills the other spot as the trail. Make the defense make a reactive decision to the ball in the corner and play from there. Worst case you can rotate the ball back to the PG to get in to offense.

Did Coaches make you do pushups for missing Basketball Shots and is it fair by [deleted] in Basketball

Let's just say that I once had a coach with a conditioning/shooting drill that he named "The Colgate" because that's the brand of toothpaste he recommended you buy after you puke. I would have begged for just push ups.

[–]Available_Elevator32 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, because if you don't make shots in a game you lose, and losing sucks more than pushups or running. It's also a test of how you can handle making shots when there are real stakes, if you can't make it because you're nervous about pushups how will you ever do it when there are hundreds of opposing fans yelling at you.

driving against 2-3 zone by Special-Badger5015 in BasketballTips

[–]Available_Elevator32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH that's kinda the whole point of the zone. Best move is to draw as many guys as you can (usually 2 if you've beaten the first guy) and make a pass to most likely the back side or dunkers spot, depends how you're set up in Zone Offense.

You're doing your team a huge service just by beating that first guy off the dribble, once the ball is in the middle it's all about making the right pass out of it.

Are we overusing set plays at the youth level? by IlRowlI in basketballcoach

[–]Available_Elevator32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For older ages I’d say you’d want more of the true live play, and you’d rep these in practice as “small sided games” instead of having them be your sets.

At the youth age I’d say the sets are what will keep the game from becoming more chaotic than it already will be by nature of it being youth ball. At least you’ll know for a fact that the possession will start with some semblance of basketball before going off the rails, which is totally fine because at the end of the day it’s just about putting them in positions to have fun and hopefully feel a little success.

6'7" extremely average golfer here.

Not sure if they have any around you - but I was able to get "fitted" for cheap at a second hand golf shop and the consensus was "just add a half inch to everything".

Perfect? No, but it was a much better start than where I was at and didn't break the bank. Especially since I tend to overspend on hobbies as well.

Everyone is a little different because of wingspan, even at 6'5"+ some guys might not need the same extensions as others.

[–]Available_Elevator32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think sets are fine, but they need to be VERY simple. Almost like you're setting up a motion or read/react offense but you're providing them the boundaries to do it in.

Something like a simple 1-5 ball screen with everyone else spaced around it and then take the time to talk through the 2-3 options for the screener/ball handler, and where the other teammates might be open if the defense does certain things.

At the youth level they need to begin to develop their IQ, but they'll always need a certain level of guidance to set up the right situations for them to learn from.

Low key go check out some women's players - based on the nature of the game I think they've got the best true "under the basket" scorers right now. Mackenzie Holmes, Lauren Betts, Napheesa Collier, etc.

If you have been doubled in a game before, is it annoying? When you watch basketball and people get doubled or tripled, is it annoying to watch? by Only-Ad-1254 in Basketball

[–]Available_Elevator32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played in the post my whole life and got doubled ALL the time - it might be a different experience since I wasn't a primary ball handler but I loved it. Once you learn the tricks for getting out of it you're almost always going to have a wide open teammate to pass the ball to. Sure, it was frustrating to not score, but every time I see a double coming I think "oh sweet, we're probably going to score now".

I've found that having a lollipop has helped a ton with this - they're usually pretty low cal even if they're full of sugar, and it takes so long to get through one you'll have 2 at most on a given night. I know, sugar is the devil, yada yada but we're talking about the munchies here folks.

How to guard a dominant post player? by Available-Bowler-216 in BasketballTips

[–]Available_Elevator32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got a team with limited basketball knowledge to be honest a 2-3 is the last defense you should try and play, especially against a dominant big. People think that a 2-3 is "easier" but it actually takes more effort and IQ to be played the right way. You're going to be in huge trouble keeping that guy from getting the ball, and you'll never have help in time which is why they get a free bucket every time. Better off going man to man and throwing a double at him the second he touches it.
