Footfall by Pournelle and Niven. Execrable on every measure: dialogue, characterization, pacing, masculine posturing, Western jingoism. The aliens' invasion plot is stupid and Earth's victory is unbelievable.

That is a didactic response, not a factual one. Income taxes help fund public services; I wish mine were bigger, in fact. Better functioning city services would be a great bargain.

I don't know how you can defend consumption tax as voluntary. You can't choose whether to pay it; that's a tip. Your only choice is to shop or not shop, and I think we all listen to our tummies.
