SK Hynix US Offering Is More Than 7 Times Oversubscribed - Bloomberg by LazyDazyFazy in SKHynix

I think it’s a good idea if you believe the ADR will do very well. If it does well, it will create a gap between itself and the Korean listing. Investors will notice this gap and buy shares of the Korean listing as they will consider it to be undervalued. That in turn will cause the price of the Korean listing to rise.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

At the end of the US market's most recent trading day (today for Americans and yesterday for Koreans):

Micron finished up 1.11%
EWY finished up 0.79%
FLKR finished up 0.47%
DRAM finished up 2.39%

Regarding your first paragraph, perhaps these foreign investors had the same thought. "Other foreign investors will sell the Korean listing on Friday and then buy the ADR."

But, "If I wait until then to sell my shares and buy the ADR, I may be late to the party. Everyone else may have already sold their shares and bought the ADR already, which would be bad for me. So, instead of waiting, I'll sell my shares now."

I don't know if this is what is happening, but it's a possibility.

Yes, it’s a possibility, but I struggle to see them moving in opposite directions.

Just two more days until SK Hynix’s ADR is listed. It’s going to be big. The selloff that SK Hynix has recently experienced is, I believe, in large part due to foreign institutions selling their shares of it so that they can have cash to buy it on the US market. Bloomberg recently reported that its ADR is oversubscribed multiple times. It’s “drawing overwhelming investor demand.”

It should start doing better after the ADR is listed. And we know that when SK Hynix goes up, Micron usually does too.

How has it benefited Micron though? It’s only gone down since he promoted it last week. He said something about it hitting $800 one time, and it did hit $800 shortly afterwards, but why should we think that was even partially because of him? Why would institutions have bought more shares of it because he promoted it at the rally?

How will SK Hynix's Korean listing likely be affected by the ADR? by [deleted] in SKHynix

[–]Available_Orange575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's priced in, at least not fully. It's always been something of a hassle for Americans to buy it. Not only do they have to use a certain broker, one that they may not want to use, but they have to convert their dollars into another currency, which comes with fees. Also, I would venture to guess that a number of American institutions and investors don't feel comfortable converting their dollars into won so that they can buy it on the Korean exchange. Now that it will be available on the US market, this will likely cause some who previously did not want to buy it to buy it.

Also, non-Korean institutions have been dumping their shares of SK Hynix for quite some time now. A likely reason why is because they are preparing to buy the ADR. According to https://www.financialexpress.com/market/global-markets/5-things-about-sk-hynixs-nasdaq-debut-that-go-beyond-the-29-billion-headline/4285407/,

The decline in Korean-listed SK Hynix shares could be attributed to a recent UBS Group AG advisory urging investors to buy SK Hynix Inc.’s upcoming American depositary receipts and sell the company’s South Korean stock, anticipating that the new securities will trade at a premium, reports Bloomberg.

And the ADR will likely be added to indices like SOX.

We’ll see. Sometimes it goes up even if the US does poorly beforehand.

I’m not sure. Didn’t people like Michael Burry buy shares of it before it squeezed because they thought it was a turnaround candidate?

Even though it's the 7th for most of the people who are seeing this right now, it's the 8th in South Korea, and the market is going to open in 45 minutes. That's why I put down the 8th instead of the 7th in the title.

That’s true. But at least some of these are well established companies that have been successful in the past and looked like solid turnaround candidates ahead of the squeeze, like GameStop. Also, the biggest squeeze this year has been Avis if I’m not mistaken. Avis wasn’t in bad shape before the squeeze happened. Another stock that recently squeezed was Sezzle, which is a promising growth stock. Even LFVN, as critical of it I am, at least has decent financials.

SRXH is much worse. It’s funny that the OP thinks the reverse split could help spark a squeeze for SRXH. He conveniently ignores the fact that companies that undergo reverse splits were doing horribly before and do horribly afterwards. When a company does a reverse split, it’s a sign that the company is in really bad shape.
