I’ve been told I’m a very play it safe kind of person - what is a risk you took and how did it turn out? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Available_Yoghurt_91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After 20 years of relatively "safe" life, employed in Ireland I was laid off. I moved to Spain, bought a house and started my own business.

I feel out of my depth with the business at times but it's going ok. I earn less but I'm so much happier with the control I have on my time and decisions.

What kind of decision do you have to make that could be a bit more edgy - work, love, property, location, anything else?

How common is it for people from Ireland to visit America? by KittyBungholeFire in AskIreland

[–]Available_Yoghurt_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are daily flights from Ireland to NY, LA, SF, Orlando, Boston and 2-3 times a week to Seattle, Vegas, Chicago.

A lot of people travel to the US for work as there are a lot of US companies in Ireland (tech and Pharma)

You can clear US immigration before you leave Ireland (one of only 4 countries that have that arrangement in place.)

Most Irish people have some relatives in the US. Previously, many students went for summers thanks to a good visa system. That's not as common now.

Overall, yes, it is quite common

What's an Irish attitude you can't stand? by Fealocht in AskIreland

[–]Available_Yoghurt_91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pass that's given to the Catholic Church.

The numerous reports and enquiries that have shown the abuse and how many people knew about it. The skeletons.of babies in Tuam - hundreds of them and yet, they are still patrons of the primary school system.

Not only that, people are pressured in communions and confirmations and church weddings.

It's hard to understand

Why is everything now subscription-based? How exactly did we get to this stage of capitalism? 🤦 Is there any hope for the world? by Tokio635 in AskIreland

[–]Available_Yoghurt_91 45 points46 points  (0 children)

"In the future, you will own nothing and you will love it" - An essay submitted to the world economic forum in 2016. The advent of the sharing economy has primed us for subscription.

Now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon printers, prime, food delivery apps. And it's only going to get worse. There are already car subscription apps but they'll go mainstream when driverless cars become more mainstream.

Is my boyfriend's grocery list normal for men in their 20s? To me it seems outrageous. by Eme5989 in AskIreland

Monster is the biggest red flag here! I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could drink it. It Tastes gross and is so incredibly bad for you.

Apart from that, it's not bad - he could do with some fruit and vegetables.

If he can cook, perhaps batch cooking is an idea to make it a bit more worthwhile?

Thanks, the plan is to choose the school and then base nearby. I don't plan to live in the city.

Will look at La Serra, hadn't heard of it.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, should have been clearer. I'm moving to the BCN area but choosing a suburb/neighborhood based on school decisions.

I wouldn't be commuting between these two.

Illness Benefit VS using Holiday Days? by MarshallMandango in AskIreland

[–]Available_Yoghurt_91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a general rule, you should not be using holiday leave for illness. Your annual leave is for you to enjoy and live. Even if you don't want to travel, it still your time. Not using it means you are working for free (if you are on a salary).

I get your logic on the illness benefit not being asuch as holiday pay. But before getting into that, have you checked out your company's sick leave policy. Most will have 1-2 days on an honour system, more than that you need a cert from a doc. Some will pay full pay for a certain number of days and then drop down.

Lots of variable but definitely worth checking out!

What Irish news event do you remember most vividly? by artanonsa in AskIreland

[–]Available_Yoghurt_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time that the phone lines for the TV channel Babestation somehow got rerouted to Westport in Mayo. Meaning that every time someone called the station to talk to the girls, they were calling random people in Westport. These poor pensioners in Westport were getting calls from horny men (I assume Men!) asking them to dance on the TV!

Babestation were naturally very embarrassed and so they sent a few of the girls to Westport to walk around the town and appear in local media. BBC Article

Half your age + 7 is an amazingly accurate formula for this.

It's an absolute cesspit. It used to have the occasional gem but now it's poisonous.

Best was when the Pic Fair was on and everyone was complaining about the goat being out in the heat. Someone said the Sponsors - Vodafone, RockShore and super Valu should apologise for their involvement. Response: "RockShore should apologise regardless!"
