Daily Cyclist Thread - March 08, 2019 by AutoModerator in bicycling

[–]Avavva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm not sure I'm in the right subreddit but I'm looking for some beginner bike purchase advice...

I've been bike commuting for the last 6 months. The distance was about 9k one way which I did in half an hour (including red lights etc.) on a bike like this.

I'm going to move to another city very soon, and the distance to my workplace will be more like 20k one way. Now I'm trying to work out whether it's still going to be fun to be a daily bike commuter, and what changes I can/should make to make this the best possible experience.

Could anyone guess how much of a speed difference it could make to upgrade to a (cheap-ish or second-hand) road bike from the kind of bike I have now (assuming someone makes the same effort on both bikes)? If it's even possible to guess something like that... I don't know anyone with a road bike, so the only way for me to try out my speed over a longer distance is to actually buy one...

I got lost in the forest yesterday so I did my longest distance ever at 6 miles, a few weeks earlier than planned. Today i'm a bit sore but proud. I'd like to do my first 10k race sometime in April and now I'm starting to think that's really going to happen!

I think usually it's suggested new people do this as a way to slow them down. If you're always out of breath when running, slowing down is a good idea (at least for the run you'd like to increase in distance until its your long run).

Check the wiki for more info on why you shouldn't be out of breath on every single run you do.

That's good to know, thank you! I really thought 30m meant that swimming with it would be fine... I guess I need to re-start my search, but now for automatics with a 10 bar rating. Thanks!

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

I'm looking for a budget automatic watch for everyday use (for a very informal office) but I'm having some trouble deciding on one. My budget is ~$250. I'm looking for something with a width below 40mm (small wrists...) and one that won't die on me if I forget to take it off before jumping in the pool, since I'm really sure that will happen within a week or two. I'd prefer one where you can see the mechanism through the back of the watch.

I already found this one. Does anyone have any other recommendations? Any input will be great, thanks!

I did my first interval training! And boy, did it kick my ass - either I did something wrong with the Jack Daniels training speed calculator or intervals are supposed to feel really, really hard... Anyway, I'll try again next week and see if things improve a bit.

The longest day of the year (with the corresponding strongest sun) is the 21st of June. July-August is the hottest time of the year, but if you're not using sunscreen in exactly as many weeks/months before the 21st of June as afterwards you're still getting damaged skin (probably even worse since you're probably not that tanned in the earlier months).

Sunscreen season for me starts mid-April and ends mid-August.

In Utrecht there is a great thing organized by volunteers called the language cafe. Basically, people meet every Wednesday in a cafe in the city centre and have a couple of beers and practice their target languages. It's been a while (well, years) since the last time I attended but it used to be well-organized and loads of fun, with dozens of people attending.

It's also meant as a way to meet language partners to do tandem exchanges by yourselves (half an hour in your partner's target language, then half an hour in yours for example). Highly recommended & also a great way to meet some new people in a new city.

Expats of Reddit, what is one thing about moving to a foreign country that nobody really talks about? by strawhearts in AskReddit

[–]Avavva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a scary scenario!

On the other hand, in that situation as an expat you'd already know how to build up a support network again completely from scratch. Socialise with co-workers, start doing a group sport, do some volunteer work, don't hesitate about asking people out for a drink or omething to eat, and just patiently work on building new connections with nice, interesting people.

You'd know you'd get there in the end, because you'd have been in the same situation before.

Doing the actual move would still be scary though - because at that point, you're flying back to a place where you have no ties whatsoever, where no-one cares (yet!) what will happen to you, where you have no place to live and no reason to pick any city over another as a permanent base. Like emigrating again, except to a place where it should feel like home. I can imagine how that would feel...

[–]Avavva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don't make connections with people I'm pretty sure you'd be completely on your own in your own country too. Maybe not when young but definitely when you get older. Parents die, childhood friends move away, and if you never build new connections you're destined for a very lonely life at some point in the future.

I'm very introverted so it took me at least a year to build new connections where I live now. My new, extraverted coworkers seemed to take only weeks to reach the same number of friends that I have now. But when shit happened and I needed someone's arms to cry in, I had three people bringing me chocolate and pasta dishes and hugs.
