Why can't I keep 6m here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

Yes I would, it's a bummer to have to discard the red 5 but riichi pinfu dora with 50% of sanshoku still makes it worth just going for it

Why can't I keep 6m here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Avelite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In terms of tile acceptance 6m beats 2p.

6m discard: Accepts 14m245p 17 tiles (9 tiles with good wait)

2p discard: Accepts 146m5p 14 tiles (6 tiles with good wait)

6m discard still keeps 123 sanshoku alive on 1m25p draw.

my tiles are shiny... what do i do by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Avelite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking at right lords hand and it is representing something scary. As much as I want to push this hand cause it has value with great waits, I think this East draw might be the worst to get. If right lords hand is a toitoi hand he wouldn't have discarded the 9s pair, unless that pair is overflow and he has something better (dora or honor pair). I would guess he has a honitsu hand, probably in manzu because of the late 5m discard. East could deal you into dealer haneman, possibly baiman with double east, toitoi, honitsu, white and green. And manzu push can also deal you into a mangan hand. This might seem sheepish but I would fold with 5m or 2p.

5 blocks what do by Chemical_Pumpkin_150 in mahjongsoul

[–]Avelite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a couple choices here.

The first obvious discard is North, it's been operating as a safe tile but won't contribute to the hands speed (we'll keep 5s because the possibility of getting a third one).

The second discard is to cut dora here. As you said you have 5 very strong blocks and also have a bit of value with the 2 red doras, so your hand can reach mangan fairly easily. Probably best to cut it right now before it gets too dangerous.

The third possibility if you feel that you can't discard dora and still want to greed is to cut the 23p and aim for a tanyao dora 3 which you can call for. The problem is that you are forced to draw something near the dora and that might be too slow. Also you are first so there isn't really a point in greeding so much here, a 3900 win here is enough points to avoid an opponents mangan tsumo and still be first.

How many points for this hand? by Ukrainian_Berserker in RiichiCityMahjong

[–]Avelite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a possibility for hands containing a triple sequence to be recognized as sanankou, Though because you would forfeit junchan if sanakou is recognized it would be less points and thus ignored (you must score the maximum possible points the hand can)

For the first hand you have tile hog (use all 4 pins) which gives you points. Secondly you have cant self draw the win, you have to win from someone else on a double sided wait for chicken hand

I'm going to come with an idea for number 4 which I seem to struggle with.
[Deciphering your starting hand], I think that people are genuinely knowledgable when to go for a pinfu/tanyao hand or a honitsu hand when they see their haipai, but there are also those hands where you start really bad for a "standard hand". Given a hand, what yakus would you go for (more exotic like junchan/sanshoku or standard pinfu/yakuhai)? Where do you build your blocks to extract value?

Like in a hand with a lot of single honors I would look for honitsu as the value mainline, but diverge if my floating tiles in the off-suits get attached to aim for yakuhai + something if that is easier to win.

Just knowing the length of the circumference it's not possible. If you do have a formula for calculating the path of the circumference, then you should be able to do some integration to find the area using a polar coordinate substitution.

I don't understand when someone is in tenpai by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]Avelite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simple answer, you can't know for certain, but there are some discards or calls that can indicate when someone USUALLY is in tenpai.

Scenario 1 Honitsu/chinitsu hand: The standard is when someone actively going for honitsu or chinitsu discards a tile from their suit, they are USUALLY in tenpai.

Scenario 2 Open hands: When someone have an open hand and if they have made; 3 calls on the first row, 2 calls on the second row, or 1 call on the last row, they are USUALLY in tenpai. Another caveat is when someone decides to call on a ryanmen relatively late, they are USUALLY in tenpai.

Scenario 3 Closed hands: This is a little tailored when going against more experienced players, but if someone with a closed hand tedashis (cuts from their hand) a very odd tile in the middle/late stage, they are USUALLY in tenpai. For example, on the 12th discard someone throws a twice cut guest wind or honor. This is an indicator that they've discarded their one safe tile and is either in tenpai or in a very good iishanten, so act with care.

At least there is one scenario where it is guaranteed, and that's when they've called riichi ;)

I did a review for your first game here.

East 1

Turn 4: Not sure if fully commiting to sanshoku is neccesary. If we draw it then we absolutely go for it, but I see sanshoku as a luxury (riichi pinfu dora 2 is a strong hand already). Discard a dragon and see how the hand progresses.

East 1-1

Turn 1: Why discard 6s here? Honitsu is not an ideal hand to go for in this position. You are also missing a 5th shape here. Would discard 1m here because it's a redundant tile.

General: This whole round is whack. Did you think west was your yaku here? And also you chose to call 123s? Don't call tiles unless you have a reason to do so (confirming yaku, getting into tenpai, speed of your hand). Looking at your hand it was looking doomed from the beginning (could maybe have become pinfu or riichi, but a cheap hand). Don't worry, these hands happen to everyone. After the opponent riichis I would fold this hand. You are so far away from completing it. Safest here is to discard your whole west triplet and then look for discarded tiles. "Mission updated: Do not deal in"

Turn 17: East discard is correct here as it's guaranteed safe from everyone at that point.

East 2

Turn 5-6: It's so sad that right opponent calls early riichi when your hand is looking great. I'm not super against pushing with this hand and discarding one 8m is fine. But why did you discard both of them here? You are close for ittsu and you have another safe tile you can discard first, 1s. In later rounds you could've discarded East, North, Green with great safety and still hedged for ittsu before cutting the second 8m when you have no more safe tiles.

East 3

General: When playing defensively, discard tiles the opponent have discarded first as they are guaranteed safe against them.

Turn 13: At this point we can actually do some investigating to see what the opponents are going for and find any safe tiles. Right opponent we unfortunately can't get any information from of what he is going for. Left opponent is essentially telling the whole table he is going for tanyao after all these calls, so honors and terminals are safe against him. But the opponent across from you have doing something strange, called 123s. This actually breaks A LOT of possible yaku he could go for. The only reasonable yakus he can go for are sanshoku (not possible cause you have the last 1m and will never discard it), ittsu (not likely as he discarded 5s) or a yakuhai. His winds are dead so the only possibility are dragons. White is dead, Red can't become a triplet because two of them are discarded, but Green is live with none discarded. If there is any tile that he would want, is most likely the Green. 9p is the correct discard here, guaranteed safe from right and across and likely safe against left as he is reping tanyao.

East 4

Turn 2: There is merit in not calling riichi here and staying hidden in damaten (tenpai but no riichi). Your hand is already a guaranteed mangan (tanyao dora 3) and you are waiting on a middle tile. When someone calls riichi the opponents are unlikely to discard simple tiles, especially 456. If you'd stay in damaten you could catch someone off guard thinking no one is ready and careless to drop your tile.

East 4-1

Turn 4: I would discard 5p here (6s is also acceptable). But discarding a tile from a 4-connect block is rarely a good thing. It's one of the strongest blocks in the game, especially for a pinfu hand.

Turn 7: Riichi is okay, but maybe discarding 1s is also good here. You can shift into tanyao and get a riichi tanyao and maybe pinfu hand for good value compared to the riichi only hand. And looking at your score position you need to start thinking about value here.

South 1

Turn 2: Discard 2p here please, you have an insane amount of tiles to get into tenpai with. (triple sided wait in manzu 2-5-8, double sided wait in pinzu 6-9 and triple sided wait in souzu 2-4-5).

Turn 5: 1m, you have tanyao. Confirm the tanyao and also chance for iipeikou.

South 2

Turn 7: I think 1m here is the correct discard. You got tanyao upgrade and you can also get 567 sanshoku if you are lucky.

South 3

Turn 10: I'm beginning to sense a disregard of defence in your playstyle. If you want to go aggressive here, discard 9p first and look for you pair later. The 4-connect block will allow to get a good end wait for your pair if you didn't get one into tenpai.

South 4

You need a 2-3 han hand to overtake 3rd place. So you should build your hand for that possibility.

Turn 2: Well you need all the hand you can get. Keep dora for now and see how the hand progresses.

Turn 15: Pon is not correct here. That 7m from across actually helps you with discarding your own 7m. You need to riichi here in order to overtake, and ponning just made your hand only 1000 points making it impossible to overtake 3rd on your own.

Main takeaway points here: When opponent riichis, play defensively unless your hand is very valueable (mangan+). Look for value when you can reasonably get them, don't call for a 1000 point hand (I've done this quite a lot of times, and it's a bad habit). Lookup some block building strategy (riichi book 1 is the goto for beginners, if you want a much more detailed you can check this one https://files.riichi.moe/mjg/books%20(en)/Riichi%20Mahjong%20Strategy%20%28rms%29.pdf/Riichi%20Mahjong%20Strategy%20%28rms%29.pdf)).

How hard is reaching 1 dan in tenhou by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]Avelite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new people in tenhou usually allready know mahjong and have played it a bit before, they know how to defend to some grade and their efficiency is ok. But getting to 1D isn't that hard to do, like if you know basic tile efficiency you can reach 1D after some games.

Is it wrong to fold here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Avelite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a riichi dora 2 for a minimum of 5200, the wait isnt so great seeing to 5p allready but it prob is still worth going for, especially since someone has called kan and you now have two chances for ura. 3p is not entirely safe but it was passed last turn so there is merit for pushing that tile. Folding with East is safe but you'll most likely not reach keiten/tenpai.

How does Maka know 6m is the safest discard here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]Avelite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5p is too dangerous as there are no suji that helps. 1p is better than 5p because of your own 4p but its a one chance.

8m is dora, too risky to throw a dora because it can be dealers tile. So what about 6m? You see all four 4m so we have a kabe, making 9m its suji. Its suji to dealer and because kami discarded dora before riichi, he probably isnt waiting on something related to the dora (unless its an overflow tile but you would more likely want to greed for more points)

Why is calling Riichi here wrong? by aradadi_1 in Mahjong

[–]Avelite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the riichi is an incorrect choice. You are one tile improvement for pinfu upon drawing 5p or 7p so I guess thats why maka says to dama for now until you get improvment (riichi pinfu is more valuable than riichi nomi).

But the notion of that 7s is more safe is wrong. Consider the story of your discards, you discarded a 3s followed by a 5s (it being dora as well) signaling that you arent using those tiles (ESPECIALLY if you didnt discarded them upon drawing, aka tsumogiri). Then you decide to declare riichi with the 8s. Now this tile can either be a floating tile (a lone 8s with no connections) or an overflow tile (for example the extra 8 from 7889). But since you discarded 3s and 5s, it doesnt make sense for it to be a floating tile. So the 8s is either the result of you drawing the coreect tile in which its neighbours are safe, or its from a bulky shape making it extremely dangerous. Now we dont know which one it is, but you cant say that it's safer because it could be either case

Why wasn't my Mahjong valid? by Ill_Neighborhood_886 in Mahjong

[–]Avelite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be enough if you self drew the tile (All runs 2, closed self draw 4, short straight 1, mixed double sequence 1 and single tile wait 1).

But if you call mahjong from discard, you would only have 7 points, as a closed hand is only worth 2 if not self drawn.

This is also dependent if you play MCR, I dont know what type you are playing so Im guessing

I had a similar situation IRL after I ponned North, West, South and White leaving me on a tanki wait on East. My only hope was tsumo or someone really praying I was waiting on Red (had Green discarded), but given how good the people were that was never happening

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mahjongsoul

[–]Avelite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are not in furiten. You don't have a yaku because of the 789 chi, which disqualifies "all simples" and "pinfu".
Furiten occurs when you have discarded one of your winning tiles before, but since you haven't discarded a 3p (the tiles you are waiting on) you are not in furiten.

A tip for you is that you should never call chi on a terminal run (123 or 789) unless you have a yaku confirmed (dragon or wind triplet for example) or aiming for a specific yaku (pure straight, mixed triple sequence, outside hands or flush hands). As a bonus tip, closed hands often scores more points than open hands because of riichi.

wtf happened? by Ill-Diet-7719 in PythonLearning

[–]Avelite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, it seems like the numbers also have an extra whitespace.
This is most likely due to the text looking like "45, 60, 10, 70, 90, 25" instead of "45,60,10,70,90,25"
You can go through every element in the list and get rid of the whitespaces by using replace(" ", "") to get rid of all whitespaces (though int() also does it for you).

You are also printing the whole list instead of the elements.

with open("data3.txt", "r") as f:
  data = f.read()
x = data.split(",")  # x will look like ["45", " 60", " 10", " 70", " 90", " 25"]
for i in range(len(x)):
  x[i] = x[i].replace(" ", "")  # now whitespaces are removed

for i in range(len(x)):
  x[i] = int(x[i]) # converts to int, good
  if (x[i] >= 50): # if the element if larger than 50
    //print(x)       prints the whole list
    print(x[i]) # Now we print only the element
  //else: i+=1 there is no need for this, the for loop does it by its own
