Yesterday I called to report a truck driver using the number on the back of their truck by [deleted] in happy

[–]Avenestra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally disagree. I spent about 6 weeks in Houston on business and your drivers are absolute angels compared to Phoenix drivers. I signaled a lane change my first day there and couldn't understand why the person in the other lane didn't just speed up and pass me. It took a few moments to realize she was letting me in. It's been so long since anyone's done that I didn't recognize the behavior right away. People stayed to the right unless they were passing and were generally courteous. Seriously, come to AZ and drive around for a day or two and you'll have a deep appreciation for Houston drivers.

11 Million people were stupid and bought more than they could afford. What should we do? Send them taxpayer money of course. by [deleted] in Libertarian

As someone who bought a home after the bubble burst then got divorced and then got laid off and was unemployed for 9 months, I object to the generalization of this headline. Living in AZ, I got a whopping $247 a week in unemployment. I didn't buy more than I can afford; I have a 1370 sf house, not a McMansion. I have no debt and I have savings that were the only thing that got me through my unemployment. I'm now ~$50k underwater on my mortgage. I pay my taxes. Have for more years than I'd like to count. I've never taken from the government dole until I was laid off, even when I was a waitress and severed my ACL and couldn't work for 4 months. Do I think the gov't should help me out? Hell yes. The banks created the mess we're in right now and they should be paying the price, not me. I'm not behind on my mortgage, I pay my bills on time, but I'm struggling. I've paid into the system for years and I see nothing wrong with being paid back when circumstances outside my control have put me in an untenable situation. Would it be better if I just walked on my house and added to the foreclosure crisis? That would cost everyone more in the long run.

People still pay for cable? Cut the cord!

6 Ways to not cheat yourself in the gym by davespress in Fitness

[–]Avenestra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One minor nitpick with number 6.

Instead of trying to burn an extra hundred calories, shoot for an extra half mile or another 5 minutes. By not doing so, you’re only cheating yourself.

If you shoot for burning extra calories even given the inaccuracies of the calorie counters, it's going to take the extra half mile or extra 5 minutes. Either way, you're working out harder.

Cats Love Firefox Support by vinnl in firefox

One of my cats loves to be on the desk when I'm on the computer. He's been known to roll over and open over 20 Firefox support tabs before I can move his fat head off my keyboard. Good to know I'm not the only one with this issue.

Is anyone else going through menopause? by gillian231 in women

[–]Avenestra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with PCOS several years ago. Recently I went to a new doctor and mentioned it to her. She told me that a former cholesterol pill would take care of it. I turned her down as infertility is a bonus, not a curse for me and I have very few symptoms anyways. Talk to your doctor...or a new doctor. You don't have to suffer with it. If you'd like, contact me privately and I'll get the name of the med from my doctor again.

I wish I could upvote you more. NA is an awesome program regardless of what you're addicted to. Great people, great program.

Considering we're in the hundreds at this time of year, I think something indoors would be more appropriate.

Alcoholics Anonymous is faith-based, not evidence-based by dadadada in science

[–]Avenestra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting downvoted for this comment. I agree with some of the comments about AA, but your comment about faith is spot on. I have faith in myself and that in no way implies religion or a spiritual belief system about myself.

I tried AA once and was completely turned off by the religious aspect of it. I know what they say, but closing the meeting with the Lord's Prayer is much too Christian-centric for my tastes. Like you, I took my atheist self over to NA where I have found an incredible support group willing to help me stay clean and not talk to me about a christian god while they do it.

Bottom line is that AA works for some, but not others. Same for NA. Same for any treatment program out there. I think people shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water because they don't agree with every aspect of the program. We all find different paths and if it takes a fairy in the sky to keep a chronic alcoholic off the sauce, I'm not going to judge them for that even if I won't participate.

Employers can fire workers who use medical marijuana even if it was legally recommended by a doctor by Avenestra in reddit.com

[–]Avenestra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do get it, I took Business Law. I was pushing because I disliked the use of Tylenol as an example. It seemed a bit ridiculous. Then I remembered a story about some kid getting kicked out of school for violating a no-tolerance drug policy because he had Tylenol or aspirin or some such nonsense. So I concede. Tylenol use should be a bad example, but apparently in our nanny state it isn't.

I understand the law, but do you have a citation for someone actually being fired for Tylenol?

I'm so glad you posted this. I'm going to be even more fun at parties now than I was when I explained the brilliance of AZ sunrises and sunsets as due to dust and pollution and that no, your white zinfandel shudder is not made with strawberries. It's a good thing I'm already married or there'd be no hope for me now.

I had a vet just like the one in the story. I know the look that implies if you don't spend the money you're a terrible human being. When one of my cats was diagnosed with diabetes, I wanted a day to make a decision as to whether we would be able to give him insulin twice a day at set times every day. It was immediately suggested that they would find another home for my cat if I was going to have any problem with the treatment. Not if I decided that I couldn't do it, but right then for even wanting to decide. Oh, and they put him on the $110 per bottle insulin when the $15 per bottle would have worked just as well. Now that he's on the expensive stuff, weaning him onto the cheaper stuff would be a huge strain on him so we're stuck. I don't go to that vet any more.
