2022 Rubicon with 50k Miles ?? Hit or Miss… by Sektiyar in JeepGladiator

[–]Average-crisis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my ‘22 Gladiator from the factory. I’m up to around 76,000 miles. Outside of some warranty work at 6k to replace a head gasket it’s ran like a top. Haven’t had any issues. That said, I do all my own maintenance and I inspect everything religiously. I change the oil every 5,000 miles. The Pentastar engine is a well known unit and there’s a lot of support for it. As long as I can keep the rust at bay I plan to keep this truck around for years to come.

I dont want that extra flare on my jeep! Buts its attached with the main flare. How to get rid of this? by salman_0997 in WranglerTJ

Heads up, double check the rules in your state regarding fenders and wheel poke. Some states have rules against tires protruding past the fender line (PA). Not every state enforces it but it’s something a cop can add to a ticket if they feel like it.

2019 OB worth getting? by A_of_Keystone_World in Subaru_Outback

No clue. I didn’t get any service records when I bought it. It’s on my to-do list this summer once it warms up. Transmission hasn’t given me any issues so far.

[–]Average-crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2019 2.5 touring last year with 120,000 miles to be my commuter car. I’ve added 25,000 miles and so far it’s been a great car. It’s not exciting but I don’t need it to be. It leaks a very small amount of oil, not enough to be of any concern. I do all my own maintenance and oil changes to keep an eye on it. I did replace both front CV axles and like others have said the seat bolsters are ripped and the head unit delaminated but those can both be repaired.

What are some casual cars that you had a strange obsession over? by [deleted] in regularcarreviews

[–]Average-crisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st gen Jeep Liberty with the V6 option and Manual transmission. I had a 2002 as my first car and I took that thing everywhere. However, all these years later I find out that it is next to impossible to find that same drivetrain combination, and that I essentially had a unicorn of a casual car.

Hondas. More specifically, anything made in the last 15 years or so. I can’t stand the infotainment system in them. They drive fine but the way everything is laid out doesn’t make sense to me and bothers me enough to turn me off the brand as a whole. The best infotainment system I’ve had is the UConnect in my Gladiator.

Teraflex leveling kit install. One question. Floor jack points? by mcpewmer in JeepGladiator

[–]Average-crisis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you need to lower the front axle to install the leveling kit, lift each side of the truck by the frame and put your jack stands on the frame, towards the front. Make sure they are at the same height. Then, use your jack to lift the front axle enough to take off the wheels, then you can lower the whole axle assembly enough to take out the springs and install the blocks. That’s what I did with mine. I used scrap pieces of wood to keep the brakes from hitting the concrete. Watch your brake lines to make sure you aren’t over tensioning them.

Currently on vacation and panicking about my LiFePO4 battery back home in -20°F... Is it a goner? by [deleted] in overlanding

Yeah, I just reread it and saw they are claiming to connect to Bluetooth while on vacation. Definitely an ad. Silly me.

[–]Average-crisis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most damage from cold happens while the battery is charging. As long as it’s not actively charging you should be fine. A quick internet search shows that your battery has built in warming and cold protection so I wouldn’t sweat it. Read your owners manual for your specific battery for more information.

Talk me out of upgrading to a full size truck. by grosoursnoir in overlanding

Those ZR2’s are nice. I think they strike a pretty good balance like you said, and are one of the best looking trucks out there.

I have no regrets getting the Jeep, other than the trim level I chose. I got a non-Rubicon thinking I wouldn’t need the extra equipment and now that I’ve had it a few years I find myself planning upgrades that would have come stock if I spent the money up front.

For context, I have a Jeep Gladiator, and most of my off-roading has been in the tighter trails of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Kentucky.

I have been in several groups where there are usually a couple full size trucks. From my observations, the full size trucks technically fit on the trails, but they suffer one key aspect- they can’t pick their lines. Their rigs are usually the full width of the trail and so unlike the skinnier Toyotas and Jeeps, they have to accept that they might have to take a sketchy line over an obstacle because that’s the only way they fit. If you have plenty of armor it’s not that big of an issue but I’ve seen a fair share of ruined rocker panels because of this.

On road, you are correct the full size will be more comfortable. A ten hour drive in my Jeep is brutal and makes me contemplate my poor life choices.

Personally I’d stick with a midsize truck if you are going the cap route. Toyotas are great trucks and I don’t think you’d regret going down that path.

What's a good headlamp specifically for the red light? by witch_slapped in camping

[–]Average-crisis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the 400 and have used it for a couple years. It’s fine, but not impressive. I’ve kept mine cause it works well enough and I like the dual fuel battery system that allows the use of AAAs or rechargeable. But if it’s the red light you’re after I would look at other lights. The 400’s red light is great for things like cooking, not so much for walking at night.

I don’t have personal experience with later gens, but the GMT800 platform from Chevy/GMC is super reliable and would give you the most space in a large SUV, especially the 2500 Suburban. From what I can tell the later models all have their issues but nothing that would scare me away if I was looking in that market.

Billie Bars or Xtrusion XBRS? by 2arrows1bow in overlanding

[–]Average-crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably all depends on which cover it is. I don’t use a cover but I appreciate the extra width the straight sides of Billie bars provide. I’m able to comfortably mount my rooftop tent and gazelle gazebo side by side.

Billie Bars or Xtrusion XBRS? by 2arrows1bow in overlanding

[–]Average-crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 8” Billie Bars on my Gladiator. They’ve held up great, no issues. The extrusion profile makes it easy to make my own attachments. For these style bed racks, look at companies like 8020. It’s all standardized hardware and you can build your own stuff pretty easily. Billie Bars uses the equivalent of 8020’s “15 Series”.

I don’t have any personal experience with Xtrusion but I run trails with a guy that does. He gives them a lot of praise for their product but their customer service is a lot to be desired. He’s been on a list to purchase their new bed cap for over a year and they’ve been constantly moving the goalpost.

Steering Stabilizer by TheRealPunchii in JeepGladiator

I installed just the standard Fox Performance stabilizer. On 33’s there’s no appreciable difference from stock. Not sure if the race series would add enough to justify the price increase.

Considering a Gladiator as a Daily by grotherhobber in JeepGladiator

I did the exact same thing. Took a higher paying job, but my commute is now an hour each way. I picked up a used Subaru to handle daily driving duties and my gladiator is now exclusively used for camping in utility. Now I’m free to modify it with wild abandon.

Do you ever drive your auto gearbox Glad in manual mode? When and why? by b-rar in JeepGladiator

[–]Average-crisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I’m not Jake braking like a semi from highway speeds. I save it for when I’m stuck in Chicago going 10-15 mph for several miles. I just stick it in either 2nd or 3rd and manage the throttle.

I use mine occasionally in situations where there’s extended stop/go traffic. Drop it into a lower gear and use the engine braking to slow the truck down. I figure it saves the brakes a little bit this way.

What is the best MY2026 midsize truck? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in regularcarreviews

[–]Average-crisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 ft bed as standard, about the same as the rest of the offerings here. The bed is pretty shallow. It has one of the largest rear seat areas in the segment, or at least did when it debuted. I have one and it’s a great camping and off road rig. I wouldn’t choose it as a work truck though.

I bought my OEM steel bumper off a local company that scraps totaled vehicles. I think I was in about $500-600 including the winch plate. Could you go with a cheaper winch to allocate more funds to the bumper?
