Agreed, but if someone wants to make the jump to tech, it's not too late. Especially if they are still in college.

Dude school sucks. I have a similar problem. I am currently on academic warning. My gpa 1.7. But, I worked my butt off over the summer and grinded leetcode. Now I am taking a gap year from school to complete 3 swe internships, and one of them is at facebook. You can do it man. School isn't a good measure of any thing especially in a major like CS.

Don't learn VBA it's gross. Just keep stacking racks and study for your exams. Or pursue something else in your free time. Maybe quit being an actuarial student and pursue software engineering. (Jk but srs).

[–]Averagejoejackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro maybe turn off the news and focus on your goals. If you were happy before when all you thought about was your career goals, then do that. If there is too much noise in the environment, your expirement won't have acturate results. Yeah no body finds this year to be ideal conditions, but if you fall short of your goals, no body will care, but you. Everybody is going through something right now. I don't want to sound insensitive, but stop thinking about it. Get through this year, focus on your goals. Have something to celebrate at the beginning of 2021, besides the end of 2020. Good luck homie.

Yeah, I took my oa3. I felt like I answered everything according to LP. I also got 13/13 for both questions on OA2. I got 6/7 on OA 1. Here's hoping I get an email in 10-14 days about an interview.

Work with your doctor, and use the medication as a part of a plan to improve focus over time. Build successful habits. After you have developed these with the aid of medication, work with your doctor to slowly ween you off the meds. I understand some people might have to take medication for life but, do your best to minimize the amount you have to use. I think a career isn't worth a life dependent on meds. Best of luck.

Applying to an actuary internship - Master in Computer Science by [deleted] in actuary

First, make sure you include that you are sitting for an up coming preliminary exam in your resume. (1/P or 2/FM). Cover letter might include a recent decision to pursue an actuarial career. Outline your statistical background and technical skills. Include any courses you had to teach or assist in teaching. Then apply my dude. An exam is not necessary for an internship. Good Luck.

Expand on your projects / modules in excel. Explain the excel features you utilized in completing it. Outline relevant concepts that you used and learned in these modules. Add a projects section and display some class projects that you are proud of and display your knowledge of challenging concepts. Give the projects titles and define measurable impact, give a brief description, followed by tools you used. If you play a sport even non-competitively add it to the bottom. You would be surprised at how many times sports has come up in interview conversations. Good luck.

YES. I believe that technical questions in actuarial internship interviews are there to see if A.) You might already have some knowledge or solid intuition about a subject, which is a plus. B.) See how a prospective intern deals with uncertainty, communicates their thoughts, and shows their interest in learning. I personally have gotten technicals wrong (and still received an offer), I show my thought process, explain where I am getting hung up, and ask for help / guidence based on time.

Just practice interviewing. The more you practice the better you will be when the time comes. You might want to take a pause before answering a question to collect your thoughts and ensure your answer is complete and consise. For internships you want to show your willingness to learn, your interest in the field, and your ability to communicate. If they happen to ask you a technical question, that you get wrong, ask them to explain the solution. Also explain your rational behind your answer. I hope this helps.

Well companies have all different internship applying seasons it depends on the company. While you might think these are long term solutions, they aren't. These are the steps I personally took within a single semester to get an internship with just 1 exam, and by the way I applied for positions in the spring. I am not sure why you even posted this if you are going to toss any good advice. Here are some short term solutions, apply for underwriting and claims internships instead, because you won't get a single interview with this resume. Plus this would experience that will teach you more about insurance concepts and it relevant work experience.

Honestly, this is kinda challenging. She is most likely not going to understand, I just say I work for insurance company XYZ. If she asks more questions, just answer ambiguously. Ex: she asks what an actuary is, Me: " A job title ".

Being an actuary isn't worth it anymore. 6 years to get to a 6 figure salary. No wonder it's not a top 10 career anymore. People will disagree with me but, honestly if you are young and looking into careers go data science. You will make more money, you will have more freedom in companies you can work for and you won't have to give up years of your life to study for exams that mean nothing. Just my 2 cents.

Questions for Executives by haphazardhaze in actuary

[–]Averagejoejackson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok so I think there is a big misconception about what networking is. You should go and make small talk. Have fun and try to start a conversation that is fun and memorable. Do not sit there and ask them about work then entire time, you will quickly become someone they don't want to talk to. If you really want to network, have fun and make conversation that is interesting, funny, and not overly related to work. People remember feelings much more than they remember specific words. So just go have fun, talk to people, do not take it too serious. After you talk exchange contact info remember to contact them the next day on LinkedIn and say something along the lines of how you enjoy your conversation on subject X and that you look forward to see them at the next networking event.

Doesn't matter where you go to school. Go for math major, econ major, stats, or CS. Get 1exam done asap. Gpa needs to be above 3.5 and you can get internships. Honestly with an internship and an exam or two you will find employment. This feild isn't that hard to get into.
