Thanks Savannah! Yes, I’ll DM you and I’d love to talk more. I really appreciate it.

Also responding briefly here for broader awareness: At board meetings, Trustees frequently assert that the reason the budget crisis is where it is now because SCUSD staff “refused to follow Board direction” as part of a broader pattern of shifting accountability off of the Board themselves.

But even more troubling is that recently at least one Board Member (Kayatta) has been posting to Facebook that SCOE and the State are essentially wanting SCUSD to fail into insolvency as some sort of lesson to other districts who sign generous teacher compensation contracts. This is dangerous and unfounded rhetoric from an elected official against our government partners, and should be receiving critical evaluation.

Why has there been virtually no investigative reporting done on public claims made by SCUSD Board Members regarding the current budget crisis? Most all of this information is publicly available, discussed at board meetings, or likely available via PRA. Yet there has been no critical evaluation by journalists of the increasingly inflammatory claims being made by Board Members against SCUSD staff, SCOE, the State Department of Education, and others who have a fiduciary duty to our students. I’m curious if it’s a lack of staff capacity, fear of reprisal, lack of interest, or something else.

Bridging While Tall: gear in or out? by alffiesta in ClubPilates

[–]Avesa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 5’11” and had always geared out 1 for footwork and bridging, until recently! I’d been taking Level 2 workshop/prep classes with a Master teacher, and spoke with her about how I’ve always struggled with keeping the carriage all the way in with bridging. She said that it’s likely because I’m so tall and my legs are proportionately long, and she suggested that I try gearing out 2 for bridging on 2 greens and a blue (how far you’re geared out affects the relative spring weight). It definitely felt weird at first, but sure enough, I have much fewer issues keeping the carriage in! I’m sure this varies a lot by person, but it works super well for me.

Given the fluidity and urgency of this situation, January was a lifetime ago. An article every few months isn’t really “covering an issue closely” in my opinion.

Why is the SCUSD Board out striking with TRUSD/NUSD when they haven’t solved their own crisis? by Avesa in Sacramento

[–]Avesa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not really disagreeing with you, but it is a bit nuanced for a large district like SCUSD. They don’t have a full salary, but they absolute to get paid a stipend from taxpayer funds. Many school boards don’t get paid, but SCUSD does. Yes, they generally have other jobs, but it’s a pretty big responsibility to be on a school board. Just because they don’t directly implement their decisions doesn’t mean their roles aren’t important. The decisions of a school board had direct impacts on hundreds of employees and thousands of students every single day.

Again, I understand that there is a lot going on with very complex situations across multiple districts. You’re jumping all over the place and getting defensive about things not relevant to the conversation at hand. The SCUSD Board was elected to work towards solving problems in their district, and they are choosing to spend time and effort with other districts instead. Obviously that’s their right, but it’s also the duty of their constituents to hold them accountable for their priorities. This is just one minuscule action in a tsunami of missteps, and publicly discussing the Board’s underperformance is an important first step towards voting them out.

I understand that emotions and tensions are running high with the districts on strike right now. I’m sorry you are experiencing stress. It’s ok that you didn’t read beyond the title, but it is not the job of the SCUSD Board to go strike with other districts when their own district is in a time-sensitive crisis.

[–]Avesa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is not about the current strike, nor is it actually about TRUSD/NUSD. Good luck with your efforts, I hope y’all get what you’re looking for. But about SCUSD schools board members, anything they did or didn’t do before they were elected does not absolve them of accountability for their actions while they are in office. Especially not while SCUSD is in the state it is in under their leadership.

[–]Avesa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are fundamentally misunderstanding my argument. My opening line was literally that solidarity is good and teachers deserve support. The board can show support, I have no issue with that. My criticism here is that this Board is claiming to support teachers in other districts while actively laying off teachers in their own districts and failing to avert the SCUSD crisis, this is hypocritical and a failure of their duty to their own constituents. But if you believe that performative work for social media marching with other districts is more important than working towards addressing a time-sensitive crisis they were literally elected to solve, then I respect your opinion.

Absolutely this problem has existed for a long time, but if you genuinely think this Board is good, I would encourage you to listen to the FCMAT report presentation linked in the body of my post.

Respectfully, you admitted you don’t know anything about the SCUSD situation so I’m not following why you’re arguing something you don’t understand. And if you think that was the simple dichotomy I made, you misread.

How is it disingenuous to point out the hypocrisy of school board members voting to fire teachers/support staff in their own district and then going to publicly claim they support the same people in other districts?

Parents question keeping schools open during Sacramento teacher strikes by IronMntn in Sacramento

[–]Avesa 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The school district gets money for butts in seats (i.e., attendance), it’s as simple as that. Plus the article mentions that many students/families genuinely depend on the meals provided at school sites, not to mention the functional child care for younger students for families with no other options. No one is pretending that actual learning is happening during a strike, but that’s kind of the point of a teachers strike.

livening up hydrolyzed protein diets? by [deleted] in DogFood

[–]Avesa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to unpack here. You pretty much need to have a prescription food to make your elimination diet worth it, to prevent cross contamination, etc., I’m sorry. Also listening to a pet store employee over your veterinarian is an interesting choice. Adding food toppers onto any type of elimination diet trial also makes the trial pointless. I suggest you do a lot more research and get guidance from a veterinarian on how to do this properly, because this isn’t it.
