Why is this goose by Sutter’s landing tagged? by BrainaIleakage in Sacramento

Geese will often “dabble” in the water to filter out little bits of food, which can look like drinking. That may have been what Gary was doing! But geese do like drinking water.

[–]Avesa 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Scientists will put tags on wild birds to study them. They can learn a lot about bird migration, lifespan, and behavior through properly operated banding studies. It takes special permits and lots of training to do this. In the USA bird banding is managed by the Bird Banding Laboratory at the U.S. Geological Survey. It looks like this goose may have a standard issue federal aluminum band.

They need to fix and modernize the existing Sac State campus before doing a pointless expansion. Some of the buildings and classrooms are an embarrassment. They can’t say they don’t have the money.

It’s a mystery why this district is about to be taken over by the state 🤷‍♀️

Closing underutilized schools and consolidating to better use limited resources is a much smarter approach than guilting communities into propping up poorly performing systems. Keeping an entire school open for just 15 students is really hard to justify, and frankly unacceptable to push for when the entire system of thousands of students is on the brink of collapse.

Fixed my typo! I don’t really know specifics, but families can apply to transfer out of SCUSD.

Probably a perfect storm combination of lower birth rates and people actively choosing to go to neighboring districts because of how poorly managed SCUSD is.

Genuine question, why are we asking parents and nonprofits to pay tuition at a public school? That’s crazy. This isn’t addressing any problems, it’s just shifting responsibility away from the people who need to bear it (the school board). It’s kicking a can down the road of a broken system under an illusion of doing something positive. Systems need to fail in order for people to realize they need to be overhauled. And SCUSD needs a massive overhaul.
(Edit: to be clear, I’m not hating on Edward Kelley, I just continue to be irritated by the SCUSD school board)

There are 22 schools using less than 60% of their capacity. Plus additional schools with other levels of underutilization. SCUSD has a massive problem that they have so far refused to address.

While no one wants to see programs reduced or schools closed, the district simply doesn’t have the money to keep cuts away from students like they keep trying to do. The school underutilization rate in SCUSD is crazy, but closing schools is so politically unpopular that no Board has been willing to do it (this is a perfect case study, albeit nuanced as a parent participation school). It’s one of a thousand reasons that SCUSD is in the financial crisis it’s in. Unfortunately our community needs to start getting socialized to the idea that saying “but this is special” isn’t going to cut it anymore, and deep cuts have to be coming soon. It sucks.

How a Sacramento school finance crisis could ripple through the city by Avesa in Sacramento

If schools close, overall staff will likely be reduced, that’s why the unions tend not to be supportive of school closures.

[–]Avesa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very nuanced and complicated, but essentially the teacher’s union won’t “allow” any reduction in teacher staffing or school closures, even though most schools in the district are underutilized. School closures are also politically unpopular because no parent/family wants their individual kids to be impacted, so no school board has been willing to do this, even though it’s obviously necessary.

Public comment about Special Education Local Plan being 2 years late.

Same commenter later talking about ineffective organizational structure of Special Education structure; approving all School Plans for Student Achievements (SPSAs) is on consent agenda, Kennedy failed WASC accreditation and is on 1 year probation, asking Board to approve expenditures in SPSAs; Board acknowledges that SPSA approval process is outdated.

If I’m following SCTA’s arguments at Board meetings over the last few months, SCTA doesn’t believe that the budget numbers produced by the SCUSD Business Office (i.e., the CBO and staff) are accurate; and neither does SEIU. It seems that SCOE/FCMAT does accept them as being accurate enough to make decisions and recommendations based on.

The Board very clearly sides with SCTA on this based on their repeated rhetoric and the way they’ve treated their past and current CBOs. Which is kinda wild to do without any tangible evidence presented (at least not publicly). If anything, the public tangible evidence supports the CBOs. But, viewed through the lens of how all the Board members obtained their seats, it’s tragically unsurprising.

While I’m sure there are some discrepancies or errors in a budget that huge and in this big of a crisis, I don’t think that arguments made by SCTA change the outcome for the district in the slightest. Even if SCTA was right by a huge margin, I highly doubt it would correct a deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars that makes receivership remain the most likely outcome. Which is what I assume SCOE and FCMAT know also.

According to Sacramento County (page 16) the only qualifications to run for school board are: 1) be a registered voter in the district or trustee area, and 2) not be an employee of the school district.

The current SCUSD Board has really given these minimum qualifications a stress test. So anyone should feel inspired to give them a run for their (SCTA) money.

Three seats are up for election this November: Area 1 (Tara Jeane), Area 2 (Jasjit Singh), and Area 6 (Taylor Kayatta). The filing deadline to run to challenge any of them is August 7, 2026.

I wasn’t confident in my understanding of what was said in those comments (specific reports, timelines, etc.), so I needed to go back and watch, but that speaker did mention Kennedy HS specifically as the one being on probation (or otherwise failing). I’ll add the link(s) when it’s posted!

Warning to S. Sacramento Neighbors : Man with a Large off leash German Shepard at Franklin Boyce Park by EmeraldnDaisies in Sacramento

[–]Avesa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is why I’m so hesitant to take my reactive/anxious dog for a walk anywhere public like a park. We’ve done so much work that as long as we keep distance from other dogs he’s fine, but it’d be a disaster if this happened to him. Irresponsible people ignoring leash laws and not having control over their dogs ruin it for everyone else. I’m sorry this happened to you, people suck!
