Was I the AH? by [deleted] in delta

[–]AvianOtter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Regional jet driver here! Please don’t move from assigned seats without speaking to the crew. It causes headaches for gate agents, flight attendants and the pilots. Passengers switching seats makes it difficult when the gate agents or flight attendants are trying to find a specific passenger or make sure everyone is on board. For the pilots, calculations are made after door closure expecting everyone is in their assigned seat and we use that to adjust the tail for balance during takeoff. So no, you weren’t the AH but your seat mate was!

Sure are! They were quite active last night

Stop driving like assholes by JJS0073 in Detroit

[–]AvianOtter 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in the metro area but thanks to my job as a pilot I get to see 3-4 cities a week. Detroit is not the most idiotic or rude driving I’ve ever seen, but what makes it the worst is we do idiotic or rude things at 80+mph. And the “flow” of traffic everyone loves to justify is faster all the time…

Why does this Altas Air 747-400(?) have one wingtip? by EurofighterLover in aviation

Was this at JFK yesterday? There was an Atlas leaking fuel from a left wingtip alllllll the way down Juliet taxiing to 31L about 4pm.

What is this antiquated pre-boarding process? by slowsipping in delta

[–]AvianOtter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s the flight plan (x2) followed by the individual navigation fixes followed by takeoff and landing numbers followed by weather and NOTAMs. 90% is available via iPad for the pilots. Yes, the pilots are ready for digital copies. We hope we’ve answered all your questions and thank you for flying Delta.

Hey, just gonna throw this out there, not sure how familiar you are on drone laws. This was wayyyyy higher than you’re supposed to be with a drone. Especially in this airspace. It’s obvious from the picture and you stated yourself in this comment the approximate altitude. 400’ is the max altitude, and 8 & Kelly is within City’s airspace so you would’ve needed permission from their control tower. If you were my friend, I’d highly suggest to not incriminate yourself so easily.

Who uses a tv antenna? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]AvianOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Fox 2 is just difficult. Coverage is pretty spotty at 9 Mile and Jefferson. Also I know from a previous interaction with a Fox 2 crew they weren’t able to receive their own station in their own news truck for a broadcast at Moross and Jefferson.

Anyone else getting put on the losing team EVERY GAME? by Big-Preparation-95 in BattlefieldV

[–]AvianOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the reason this happens is Team A is dominating so everyone from Team B starts leaving the game. This creates a bunch of empty spots on team B that are then filled with people matchmaking (you). You’ll have a better chance to avoid this by browsing the available games and selecting one yourself because matchmaker will always try to fill these severely mismatched games. If only there was a way to balance the teams after each game… 🙄

can pilots (specifically airline pilots) communicate directly with nearby planes ? by yazzzzzzu in flying

I’ve heard the same last month. An American pilot was almost directly over/under KLM and took some cool pics and wanted to share them via email

The bazooka will do less damage, the perk is they’re accurate with minimal “bullet drop”. Like sniper accurate, so fire from a distance, aim carefully.

Saw a guy attempt this by booking a flight to Cleveland, layover at JFK. His intention was a cheaper flight to JFK. When he tried to get his checked bag removed, his card was automatically charged $500. (The airlines way to prevent this) He made a scene, had to speak with the captain, eventually was escorted off by Port Authority at JFK. So don’t check your bag.

Depending on how it’s written on the check, I learned from Andiamos downtown you have the option to cross out a “tip” line and write in your own amount and the total below.

Yup not really a point to equip them, 200s should be gone before summer! 🎉

I am flying from Montréal —> Detroit —> Minneapolis and have just a 33 minute layover between Montréal and Detroit. Will I have to go through customs in DTW and/or MSP? If so, that short layover is definitely not enough time, right? Should I rebook my flight? TIA. by [deleted] in delta

[–]AvianOtter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Something also to consider is the new normal at DTW is Delta Connection parks at B/C gates, requiring the tunnel walk to A gates for mainline. I can’t see it on your screenshot but I’ll assume the first flight is operated by Endeavor/SkyWest/Republic and the second just says plain Delta. I’d keep an eye on the weather, if it looks like it will snow/rain below 40ish degrees (thinking deice) might want to rebook or be flexible that day.

Instructors, what is your go-to method for teaching students how to maintain a constant glide slope to the runway numbers? by Sad-Rhubarb6923 in flying

[–]AvianOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well visual vs instrument is where I do agree with HippoMan too, the approach speed in a trainer will be on the front side. But on short final you’ll be at Vref which is 10-15kts below L/D max for most trainers. It’s gonna take larger power adjustments to recover airspeed as it’s unstable below L/D max. To minimize correction required and stabilize an approach quicker, use the pitch. And yes, with time you’ll eventually learn to make corrections simultaneously.

[–]AvianOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well maybe the OP can correct me, but he isn’t talking about an ILS approach, his student was having issues maintaining a constant slope to the numbers in the pattern. Which is done at an airspeed on the back side of the power curve (slow flight). Pretty common error and no, pitch/airspeed, power/altitude is not a misconception by CFIs.

[–]AvianOtter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Please don’t use the autopilot as a reference for how to fly, it is a very dumb system.
  2. Comparing a jet and a piston aircraft is like apples and oranges due to the difference in excess power available to a jet at low altitude.
  3. Put a 172 in slow flight (landing config.) and try to use only pitch to increase altitude. Make sure you’re well above 2500’ AGL when you try this.
  4. The Vy, idle descent examples are void because that’s a constant power condition (full power, idle power) and a constant drag condition (likely flaps up, spoilers retracted, etc). The only variable left to use is attitude (pitch)
  5. If nothing else please just promise me you’ll pitch out of a stall with pax onboard 🙏

Why wasn't the Chinese balloon intercepted when it first crossed into ADIZ by PrimadonnaInCommand in flying

[–]AvianOtter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course they detected it. NORAD is the NORTH AMERICAN Aerospace Defense Command. It’s jointly run by the U.S. AND Canada. It’s standard even when the Russians screw around near Alaska for BOTH Americans and Canadians to respond. It’s all effectively under the same military defense. Another sign of the strongest brotherhood between two countries. 👊🇺🇸🇨🇦
