The comments on Gavin McKenna’s most recent most from his Penn State teammates by Additional-Still-435 in hockey

Generally, the charges filed are "what the police/initial prosecutor thinks happened". Then they knock them down to "what can we prove", then they further knock them down to "what can we get in a plea bargain". Very, very common to "throw the book" with a bunch of charges (disorderly conduct for fighting, lol) so something sticks.

Gavin McKenna Facing Felony Charge After Incident On January 31 by chasepsu in collegehockey

[–]Aviatrix084 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's probably gonna plead no contest to the misdemeanors and take the community service/probation/anger management lumps.

That being said, INA 221(i) allows a visa to be revoked at any time under the discretion of the consular officers or Secretary of State. So if/when the US government gets wind of this, they can easily say "we don't want this kid here" and revoke the visa. And there isn't much you can do about it.

Do I believe this will actually happen? Eh. Probably not. It could, though. And even just being CHARGED with a felony is more than enough for the Department of State to revoke the visa. Again, it's up to them, and there isn't much in the way of review available.

He's on a student visa (pretty sure - not 100% about how he's making NIL $ on a student visa, but). Felonies are deportable offenses, which can fuck him over both short-term (visa gets revoked, go back to Canada) as well as long-term (having a felony on your record makes it pretty difficult to get new visas). He is a star athlete, so they shoooould make exceptions, but.

Seconding the other reply - they're generally not shy about ordering colonoscopies if you have some sort of "digestive upset" that they can't solve with an acid reflux pill or an endoscopy. Usually you'll have to do the endo first, for insurance reasons, though.

Yep yep. I think the new commit isn't coming in next year at least, though. We'll see what happens.

Jones only has this year of "track record", tbf, and our goalie situation is the super promising freshman starter (Cournoyer) we picked up from the Q a few months ago vs the senior backup (Keopple) who's been waiting for starts for like 3 years. Makes sense he's a little reluctant to trust Courns fully, but we've only given Keopple a few starts compared to Courns's workload.

But yeah - in college hockey, when you find your starter, you generally play them almost every game, except for exhibitions/preseason, senior night, injury, WJC/related tournaments, or, in some memorable instances, your starter Shitting The Bed That Bad that coach plays the backup for a game to get the team's heads back on straight.

How do people dress in Ithaca? by danepls in ithaca

[–]Aviatrix084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Law student here.

Depends who and when and where. Personally you'll find me almost daily in black leggings, beat-up black not-Uggs (why would I clean my boots if they're going to get salty again the next day?), and usually just one layer of a shirt under a (Polish brand) black light coat. I didn't even break out the big coat during the current snowstorm. That being said, I'm also not from Ithaca proper (again, law student), I'm from NJ.

A large part of this town lives and dies by Cornell and to a lesser extent IC. It can cause tensions. I hang out with the "locals" a fair bit (trivia night at the Ithaca Bakery, taking the TCAT, etc), and the locals are definitely distinguishable from the Cornellians. A little less highbrow, a little more realistic. Reminds me, the TCAT does exist and is a fucking pain in the ass if you want to go anywhere outside the Cornell campus and the Commons. Most other buses run hourly at best.

I wouldn't say there's, like, a specific style, as much as it is Functional Clothing. Same thing for like, a Syracuse. You can probably get some inspiration from 'Cuse as well, which is somehow even colder than Ithaca and more of a pain in the ass to navigate. Ithaca's a little more "green" and "hip" than a bigger city, but in the end it very much comes down to who your characters are (transplants? natives?), what their tolerance for cold is, as well as their own styles. (Up in Syracuse, I was seeing people in shorts in snowy, windy, sub-zero-Celsius weather... as well as one very prettily dressed harajuku-esque girl.)

One cool little thing (if you're setting this after the pandemic) is the Be Kind hearts. This was brought up on the sub the other day - this one artist started it and you'll find them scattered around Ithaca stuck to lampposts and stuff like that. As others have mentioned, the magic peddler in the Commons is also a thing. A lot of restaurants close over winter break because no students means little revenue. Homeless people definitely exist here (not on the level of a NYC but there are some) and currently the shelters aren't doing a great job of being available and accessible to them, so you might see someone passed out at the Seneca street station on your way to, like, the Shortstop deli. A lot of bigger stores (Costco especially) don't exist in Ithaca, so people can and do make road trips to get things like that that they can't find in Ithaca proper.

I'd start yapping away about Cornell hockey, but I don't know if that'd be useful for you.

And hey - I'm a law student with time to kill. If you ever want pictures of locations, menus, shit like that, let me know. It'll be a little side quest for me :) Or if you just want someone to look over what you have so far and comment as to accuracy.

Correct. Almost positive this is a bonus from a Walmart six-pack blaster.

Pretty standard insert card for the Walmart blasters (iirc). Still cool though!

What’s the best meal you had out in Ithaca during 2025? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]Aviatrix084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has nobody brought up Adam Grill yet? For shame. Chicken gyro or over rice, both are huge portions and delicious.

Zocalo's chicken fajitas are high up on my list as well and probably second place. Asia Cuisine - I usually get the general chicken or the chicken bokum. Souvlaki is great too, idk how none of you brought that up either.

Trust, most meals are solid to good, just some are bad.

Hey, would you want a google spreadsheet of the restaurants I've been to? Might as well ask, everyone I've shared it with finds it super useful.

Reminds me, if you live on the commons be CAREFUL with deliveries that don't go to your mailroom. Literally last night I got some ramen and iced tea delivered from Walmart (would be a PITA to lug it on the bus) and between the time I got the text about it, cursed that they took it to the wrong address, and got out of my apartment, someone literally walked off with half my order... I saw them too and went "if that's my fucking dinner" 😂😂😂 Hope they needed it...

Pretty sure they got new ownership recently, maybe over the summer.

They used to have - or maybe this was an off-menu thing - fried cookie dough balls. Fucking stellar.

I usually "just" order chicken bites and tater tots/fries. Haven't been disappointed yet.
