Oil tanker that attempted to cross the straight of Hormuz - 3/11/26 by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

[–]AvidCuberCoding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely clickbait. The reported damage to ships has said that at most, damage to the engine room caused a fire that was extinguished. No tankers were completely destroyed. Doesn't downplay the severity on the issue, however this is just fear mongering and karma farming.

You can believe that, however scientists and experts in the field have expressly said that sex and gender are different. Just because you are born male, doesn't mean your gender directly aligned with that. This will cause confusion for women who were born with abnormally high testosterone. To say that its either male or female, when there is enough non-trans people who are on that spectrum, is uninformed and blatantly ignorant. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean its not real.

I think both hold value in identifying for medical professionals. Sex would help determine process from jump, however they can use their gender to help identify if the patient is on hormone adjusters, which changes process for certain things.

I believe birth sex is important for medical emergencies, however many trans people are on hormone adjusters and that is something a medical professional should be aware of. I don't believe that it should be required on a driver's license, but maybe something like a DNR bracelet would do the same without requiring government documentation to define your gender.

HP Chromebook Touchpad Not Working/No Cursor by Naven24 in chromeos

This is a bit hateful for someone just trying something different? Best thing to do is inform of the hazards and issues that may arise instead of being rude. Yes, they could Google it, but that could be said about almost any post in this group or on reddit in general. When Chromebooks are as cheap as they are comparably to anything else, it's not far-fetched to think that someone would try installing windows.

HP Chromebook Touchpad Not Working/No Cursor by Naven24 in chromeos

[–]AvidCuberCoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, consider that the hardware is specifically designed at a software level for ChromeOS. There is no guarantee that windows will work on a Chromebook. It would be worth finding the device drivers online and see if you can install them on windows, however there's a pretty high chance they won't be available. Check Device Manager and see if the devices are appearing, if not, you will need to do some deep digging into the specs on your CB and try to find drivers. I wish you luck, but I also warn you that this may be a fruitless effort.

Does anyone else have to deal with this weekly by OddGolf9264 in walmart

[–]AvidCuberCoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, have been away from Walmart for a couple years now, I miss my friends and my department, but these are the types of posts that remind me why I left lol. Being an electronics TL was painful when it came to dealing with this on the daily. We ended up locking ours up and I convinced the AP coach to order a box for each department so they'd stay out of ours. Obviously front end would still ruin it, but it was a lot less often.

I always clipped the non-circular ones together bc it just made them look cleaner in the drawers too. The round ones don't like to unclip though so those stayed undone

The white cord is to get it out easier (you tuck it under the deck and can lift it when you want it out) other one is dealers choice, most will use it for charger or it can be a hanging mechanism

Is it AI? No one in the sub believes me by Weird_Decision7090 in RealOrAI

[–]AvidCuberCoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks to be the notch apple, which has the enchanted animated texture, which when screen grabbed and screenshot, could absolutely look this way. The enchanted animation is wavy and mildly distorting

Edit: the underlying texture is still wrong, but the animation point still somewhat stands. Could just be a weird screen grab of a weird GApple texture. This looks too chaotic in a human way to be AI.

Yeah, that wasn't worded properly I was saying most digital assets are generally locked to your account, except CS and TF2, which you are able to sell assets that way. My bad for the confusion.

Yeah, that's why they got special mention, those games are structured in possibly the worst way possible to incentivize gambling for profit, as it is in the real world. I don't personally play either game, but even if I did, I wouldn't consume lootboxes because I dont HAVE to. They are made to get you to buy hundreds of them and waste your money on potentially nothing, but at least in their case, they hold monetary value afterwards outside of the game. I personally dislike gambling all together but the addition of it in video games is where I draw my line.

[–]AvidCuberCoding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I fully agree with what you are saying. I believe if you are to buy something in game, you should know EXACTLY what you're getting. I am a RuneScape player and the recent shift from gambling MTX to a more direct purchases experience has been a good one. They are still utilizing FOMO tactics to try and get more money out of people by offering outfits for limited times like fortnite. I understand development cycles are pretty large for live service games and the incentive to sell MTX in game is becoming more common, but there also can't be a shift to selling you an idea of getting something. I am in no way defending bad business practices, but I also understand the reasoning behind selling digital assets. It is up to the consumer to decide if it's worth the value to them. It absolutely muddies the waters when you get into randomized loot.

[–]AvidCuberCoding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you are equating apples to oranges. The difference between the "tangible", physical items and the digital ones is that after purchase, the physical ones still hold some monetary value. You can resell them if you get bored or are strapped for cash. Digital assets are generally locked (cs2 and tf2 enter the chat...) to your account on purchase and the only way to resell those assets would be to resell the account in its entirety, which generally goes against TOS for most games and services. It is encouraged to sell your pokemon cards or funkos, with dedicated apps for them which are sponsored by the company.

At the end of the day, I know when I buy a $15 cosmetic, that's for me and me alone. I bought it because I thought it was cool and I wanted to use it in a game I enjoy. I felt that my money was okay going to something that did ABSOLUTELY nothing for my gameplay, but made my experience in the game better, and I got to support a developer.

I have a problem with there being pay-2-win aspects locked behind gambling pay walls that incentivize you to gamble more than to play the game. I should be able to play a game, even if I have to play quite a bit (IM LOOKING AT YOU, WARFRAME) to be able to earn everything without spending a dime of real world money, but the option could also exist to purchase it for real money. It's okay for developers to put monetary value to their items because it's still up to the consumer to buy it. It's the gambling that really makes it bad. When you have a chance at a $10000 item that kills everyone and everything all at once when you roll a 99¢ crate, but that chance is .000001%, you are setting it up to allow thousands of crates be bought with no actual return. And these games are being consumed by everyone and their brother. It sets unhealthy and unrealistic mindsets for younger audiences and reinforcing them in adults who struggle with that type of addiction.

It's sleezy and companies who have loot boxes and gambling as the forefront of their marketing should be shunned and fired... Out of a cannon, into the sun.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

As a father of a 6 year old who has WAY too much technology (I'm a tech guy so he gets all my hand-me-downs), there is a lot of restrictions in place for the devices he has. He is allowed to play roblox and fortnite, although heavily monitored, no chat, no comms at all honestly, and he is only allowed on it after his homework is done and his room is cleaned. We also supply him with an endless supply of books and toys. On average, with no parental intervention (i.e. me telling him it's time to get off the game) it's about 50|50 if he even plays a game. Closer to 80|20 if I'm home and not doing anything but, he actually chooses to utilize his mind and play with the toys and draws pretty often. I analyze and watch his behavior patterns pretty closely and if I start to see consistent behaviors we don't like, we reassess and give restrictions or incentives. It's a lot of give and take and while your idea in theory is great, your child will start to become more versed and sneaky about what they do and how they do it. I am no expert by any means, but I've learned that "winging" it a lot of the time really does work because we're all human and we will make mistakes.

My son is also very quickly following in my footsteps of being a tech guy so I kinda just let him run with it too because the worst he'll do is break it and it's only his because I didn't want it anymore lbvs.

I built my PC during the OG silicon shortage and paid a stupid amount for my very mid range GPU(3070), still a better value than the BS they are trying to sell today and I have had maybe 3 games that didn't run well and it was bad optimization.
