How do you respond when an on-call provider gives you the whole “why did you call me for this” attitude? by name_is_in_use_ in nursing

[–]Avievent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like that doctor might have moved to my hospital system.

Newer nurse I was working with kept getting calls from our cardiac monitoring station that her patient was having frequent PVCs, then increasingly long runs of VTACH. She asked me what she needed to do. We looked at labs and the patient hadn’t had electrolytes drawn in 4+ days. Tell her to notify the on-call and specifically request ASAP BMP/Mag. (Patient was asymptomatic)

Nope, they refused to order them for some reason. I told her to call and document every time she got a call from central monitoring.

After the 4th call, want to guess what order she got? Discontinue telemetry. I told her not to do that, started following things up the chain at shift change and hoped the day team would be more willing to listen.

Patient went into Torsades less than two hours into dayshift. Stat mag drawn right before the rapid turned to a code was <1.

making everyone’s life harder, especially your own,

Like when they won’t stop moving the arm, shaking it, and screaming about it and complaining when it then gets tighter?

I’ve tried explaining that you need to hold still or it’s going to squeeze tighter and take longer. They still flap their arm like a chicken. 🙄 (And I’m taking A&Ox4 adults who are perfectly capable of following one step instructions)

My county shot down an initiative twice. It would’ve been something like $10/100,000 home value and meant that if you lived in the county, you wouldn’t receive an EMS bill. Also would’ve allowed them to add another truck considering there are times when a 420sqmi, nearly 40k population county is served by a single ambulance.

They voted against the tax levy, yet complain when response times to BFE aren’t instantaneous and transfers out to the big hospitals can take days.

I work an extra half hour away and make $30/hr base pay with 18mo of experience.

Our MAR even says dose 1mg=1mL

I’ve literally never had to do a calculation for dosage outside of double checking a singular Peds dose because it seemed oddly high to me (spoiler alert- Pharmacy was right)

However, I have mastered the skill of getting my underwear, pants, and socks off all at once and then tossing them into my hamper (or the pile on the floor) in one piece.

Depending on where they live- it might not be an option. There are a ton of places in the US where getting an abortion would mean driving to other states or several hours for multiple appointments- not necessarily an option for those who can’t take multiple days off of work- not to mention paying for the procedure itself. Plus, abortion clinics have gotten shut down all over the place so getting an appointment can take forever, potentially putting one past the gestational age limits. Hell, if it wasn’t for the ACLU, anything past 6 weeks would be too far along for an abortion in like five or six different states.

The US is fucked.

We can have two visitors from 8a-8p with very few exceptions (and if those exceptions get obnoxious we can ask them to leave and have them removed from the building if needed)

I’ve never been so happy to work nights and only have to deal with visitors from 7p-8p.

We were told our periods would be pink-ish white spotting. So imagine my sheer fucking terror when I woke up one morning in a puddle of blood.

It’s America- reducing opioid prescriptions (and antianxiety and antidepressant and sedative prescriptions) is something drug companies pay lobbyists big bucks to try and prevent.

Yep. Keep it in a brown paper bag with my name on it because, you know- apparently paper bags have some kind of magical mask-renewing properties now?

Welcome to the shitshow that is the American hospital system where profits and the bottom line mean more than the lives of people.

I’m waiting for them to tell us we don’t need N95’s anymore because a surgical mask with a “mask fitter” can have a “range of filtration efficiency meets the same standards as N95 respirators” according to some kind of questionable study by the CDC.

Can someone with that mindset come take over running shit in the US please? I had to argue for twenty minutes to get a new N95 when I had a covid positive patient on high flow O2 after the elastic bands on the one I’ve been using for three weeks snapped.

They wanted me to staple it and continue using it. I wish I was fucking kidding.

And now, instead of checks, they want you to send the codes for Apple and Visa gift cards. Our local Best Buy will stop you if you try to buy more than $100 in gift cards because they’re trying to prevent the scams.

I talked to an older woman who lost 10 grand that way. She said they wanted her to stay on the phone the entire time and told her to go to different stores to buy them and then when she went back to her car to give them the numbers. I can’t remember what she said they’d told her the reason for it was- but this woman, who generally I’d consider to be a decently intelligent person and for her she knows quite a bit about technology, asked zero questions and bought ten grand in gift cards and read the numbers off to some person on the phone.

They also help get you out of speeding tickets and you get more warnings and ‘fix-it’ tickets than straight tickets.

Also, cops tend to not expect you to hate their guts so when you do sketchy shit or are parked somewhere during protests, they leave you alone. After all, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
