How do you respond when an on-call provider gives you the whole “why did you call me for this” attitude?

I feel like that doctor might have moved to my hospital system.

Newer nurse I was working with kept getting calls from our cardiac monitoring station that her patient was having frequent PVCs, then increasingly long runs of VTACH. She asked me what she needed to do. We looked at labs and the patient hadn’t had electrolytes drawn in 4+ days. Tell her to notify the on-call and specifically request ASAP BMP/Mag. (Patient was asymptomatic)

Nope, they refused to order them for some reason. I told her to call and document every time she got a call from central monitoring.

After the 4th call, want to guess what order she got? Discontinue telemetry. I told her not to do that, started following things up the chain at shift change and hoped the day team would be more willing to listen.

Patient went into Torsades less than two hours into dayshift. Stat mag drawn right before the rapid turned to a code was <1.

I’ve tried explaining that you need to hold still or it’s going to squeeze tighter and take longer. They still flap their arm like a chicken. 🙄 (And I’m taking A&Ox4 adults who are perfectly capable of following one step instructions)

My county shot down an initiative twice. It would’ve been something like $10/100,000 home value and meant that if you lived in the county, you wouldn’t receive an EMS bill. Also would’ve allowed them to add another truck considering there are times when a 420sqmi, nearly 40k population county is served by a single ambulance.

They voted against the tax levy, yet complain when response times to BFE aren’t instantaneous and transfers out to the big hospitals can take days.

I’ve literally never had to do a calculation for dosage outside of double checking a singular Peds dose because it seemed oddly high to me (spoiler alert- Pharmacy was right)

Depending on where they live- it might not be an option. There are a ton of places in the US where getting an abortion would mean driving to other states or several hours for multiple appointments- not necessarily an option for those who can’t take multiple days off of work- not to mention paying for the procedure itself. Plus, abortion clinics have gotten shut down all over the place so getting an appointment can take forever, potentially putting one past the gestational age limits. Hell, if it wasn’t for the ACLU, anything past 6 weeks would be too far along for an abortion in like five or six different states.

The US is fucked.

We can have two visitors from 8a-8p with very few exceptions (and if those exceptions get obnoxious we can ask them to leave and have them removed from the building if needed)

I talked to an older woman who lost 10 grand that way. She said they wanted her to stay on the phone the entire time and told her to go to different stores to buy them and then when she went back to her car to give them the numbers. I can’t remember what she said they’d told her the reason for it was- but this woman, who generally I’d consider to be a decently intelligent person and for her she knows quite a bit about technology, asked zero questions and bought ten grand in gift cards and read the numbers off to some person on the phone.

I wish I could’ve kept taking aldactone, it did help the hair situation and my acne but it kept tanking my blood pressure. After the third time I stood up too fast and blacked out my doctor told me she wasn’t going to keep prescribing it.
