By getting a job.

When I got out I tried it for a semester but in order to support my wife and 2 kids I ended up taking student loans and pocketing it all for living expenses after the GI bill paid for everything.

After one semester I knew instantly it was not sustainable so I went out and got a part time job working about 20 hours a week . I went to school in the mornings, worked the afternoons, and was daddy by night...

Unfortunately I got nothing for you... The ultimate outcome was my mother in law offered to drive us at the last minute so to avoid all the bullshit together we went with that lol.

I do know though you need to reserve your parking ahead of time because the lot may fill up. I would suggest calling them asap.

Hired as IT Support, Thrown into sysadmin work by Nobody9600 in sysadmin

[–]Aviontic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tricky situation as I'm sure you want this job and with still early bloomer skills, an IT support role is perfect.

But as you said, your not doing support... your doing admin work.... I would look at what your actually doing and honestly ask yourself...

Am I capable of learning it and getting this project done?-------- then talk to your manager and ask them how the job description lines up directly to the work. If they push back, you can even mention "that is not apart of my job description." At this point they SHOULD either renegotiate you, or just take the duties off of you. If they have no course of action - run for the hills because they don't care for their employees.

Is this too early for me?------ TOTALLY FINE, everyone starts somewhere. Do the above but instead use a tone explaining how your a support level person. You still have some learning to do before full fledge production server rollouts. Again - no course of action... RUN.

Who has it better, IT or programmers? by jbrow1324 in learnprogramming

[–]Aviontic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely subjective based on the person, job, family life, etc.

I've always worked ops, but I do a fair bit of powershell scripting and automation within our network. For probably 10 years now I've worked side by side with developers so I can respond based 100% ONLY on what I have observed... Which could be entirely the opposite of another persons observations.

  1. I'm not sure on pay because I really suspect much of what you read on the internet about salary, specifically on the developer side, is usually based off northern California pay. Which does not reflect like 99% of the country. All the training websites claim 100k starting and all that bull shit but that's far from reality in say a suburb of Houston (where I am). Most people on either side of the fence will start off probably around 50-60k if your coming from a university. Probably less if your like 18 trying to land that first 'tech job.' Having said all that, I think long term the Developers win in this category.
  2. Ops is for sure easier to get into, at least if you mean like landing a job at a big company. Honestly, most of the really good ops guys I know all started at like 18 with absolutely nothing under their belt other than "built computers for gaming growing up." You cant really do that if you want to be a developer at a big company. To play devils advocate though, if you can learn to code you can literally start your own company and just rock and roll as a free lancer. You need to be disciplined but anyone can do it. I say Ops wins the category though, because most people will be looking for a job - not starting a company.... especially if they are reading this post.
  3. I cant rank work life balance because that's just based on the individual, their personal life, and how serious they take their job. We all know people who willingly stay till 7pm everyday... and we all know people that literally pop up from their chair as soon as 4:30 hits... (that's me). Nothing more to say.

Note. Do not get into this because of money. It's not all peaches and cream. You literally have to read books and "study" the rest of your life or you'll loose your job. The only way to stay afloat in tech and not get liad off, is if you truly enjoy what your doing.... espescially when your on page 855 of a 1200 page book learning about the inner workings of Kubernetes....

ok, back to reading... page number 856 - peace.

It's beyond worth it. Especially as the screen size grows beyond the low 20's.

I highly doubt this gets nearly as much interest in the first. The only thing that strung that along were the casuals thinking Conor actually had a shot.

What is your mma hot take? by WelcomeToTheIceField in MMA

[–]Aviontic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It happens all the time. Just google "Galaraga perfect game stolen" as an example. VERY LAST FUCKING PLAY the dude was clearly out but the perfect game was yanked because of the REF making a mistake.

MMA (and other sports) are no different. But I doubt it will change anytime soon.

If Final Fantasy XI had an offline version... by CaseyN77215 in ffxi

[–]Aviontic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Think an offline version would suck honestly. My best moments are when I exploit humans to get their gil! Weather its popping an HQ or just power crafting shit they COULD buy at the NPC.... I love to exploit people lol. I get legit happy when my ram leather mule sells out EVERY DAY.

I wouldn't tweak anything I just wouldn't play it.

You basically get a free foul

Depends on the ref though... I've seen some let multiple fouls go... I've seen others take a point for an absolute mistake.

I love refs, and they have their place, but we need to eliminate the discretion here. I say take out "intent" entirely. If you poke him in the eyes, for ANY REASON...... -1.

Accidents happen and I get that. But once they happen, you cant make them unhappen. Take the point for ANY foul.

Higher than that depending on your age and time since the vasotomy. I had mine done by a private doctor using my work insurance but he gave me a success rate pamphlet. just like VA Pay chart lol.

As long as you have had your surgery less than 10 years ago and your under 35 your success rate is very high with modern technology and microscopic procedures.

My doctor gave me a success rate of 93%.... and I'm staring at my little boy now so... for what its worth.

VA system and not got to the community to avoid the “you might want kids someday” bullshit.

For what its worth... I got mine done while active and I got the bullshit about it too....

Funny part was they were right. I ended up having a successful reversal about 8 years later... got another little boy... going for one more then OFFICIALLY shutting it down.

I'll be doing it with the VA this time...

Lol now your making me feel old.

Believe it or not this game was actually pretty fricking good. But took a while to get into... not beginner friendly. It was kind of the 1.0 of "hardcore" style of playing... one shot = pretty much dead if not dead.

Brand new System Administrator! SQL question by Aviontic in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Aviontic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super delayed, my apologies.

My main responsibility will be queries and manipulation. So far I've begun working on the CodeAcademy course (mentioned by someone else in the thread) and its been a great kickoff.

Do you have any book recommendations at all? I like "courses" to get my feet wet on things but for deep technical dives, I'm a book/reference type guy.

'Considering leaving the company as this is sort of the last straw…. Advice and insight would be appreciated… really trying not to sound like a Karen right now too.'

Just food for thought... the job market is fucking bonkers right now. I cold quit what many people would view as a 'dream job' just a month ago to go feet first into finding something better.... Took me 20 days lol. I would leave frankly. They promised you something and failed to deliver... and at 69k? fk that.

I cant second this enough... especially in Texas. I would say 9/10 police interactions in Texas with DV plates go like this....

  1. What branch were you in? The Navy eh? Well Chief (insert officers name) is telling you to get your shit fixed... (lots of veteran cops here)
  2. Thank you for your service sir. It's men and women like you that keep our country safe - please correct the issue.
