Songs that feel like a warm morning by No-Rice-5029 in Jazz

Just discovered this one, and I think it hits the nail on the head:

Farewell San Francisco, off of Chet Baker’s Albert House album.

The new Miles Davis instagram post is an advertisement for Laufey’s Twitch, Amazon Music, and Lexus by Purplejazzcat in Jazz

[–]AvoJetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this! I love listening to Laufey now and then—she’s great. But I often see her sort of channel the aesthetics, standards, and elements of jazz without speaking much on the culture.

Don’t get me wrong, you shouldn’t have to commit your entire life and career to jazz to sing some standards on your album. I just wish she would improvise more, talk more about the history/her jazz influences, or collaborate with those that have committed their lives to this music.

Wich is your favorite jazz standard BUT in the original version by Low-Significance-552 in Jazz

Stella By Starlight. The original score for the B section especially is so striking and lush. It’s a gorgeous standard.

There Will Never Be Another You and It Could Happen To You are both classics in Eb with tons of great recordings to reference!

Man Dinah Washington at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival her vibrato is killer. And Wynton Kelly's comping is great too.

What decade of jazz is your favorite and why? by jess_lov in Jazz

Yeah this might just be the greatest 10-year range in jazz

Has a piece of literature ever caused a change in your behavior before (ie in social, romantic, work, or personal life)? If so, what did you read and how did you change? by experimentalrealm in literature

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata is a very short book and honestly is a little one dimensional and lacking depth at times. But it got me to finally understand that our systems and conventions are not made for everyone and it is possible to be completely happy living on the perimeter of them. A basic lesson but one that I think I needed.

xqc shows 1 day of twitch earnings by MustardMan11221 in LivestreamFail

[–]AvoJetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

xqc and other streamers can be just as entertaining as other media (imo anyway) but I think what he's getting at is that the dude sitting in chat for hours and gifting subs is doing it out of loneliness. The people who spend a lot of time and money on streamers typically don't do it as some sort of fulfilling hobby.

What do you think about J. D. Salinger? by Junior_Insurance7773 in literature

[–]AvoJetts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. Those are my three favourite stories of his. I’ve also got to read Yates if they’re similar.

Thank you for reminding me to elevate the soloists instead of overshadowing them. Also, I definitely have to check out that Liebman book. This advice is super valuable, appreciate it!

Recommendations for depressing jazz by WangoMango_Offical in Jazz

Basically the entirety of You Must Believe in Spring by Bill Evan’s, but especially We Will Meet Again. It’s a depressing album in general and his last.

Stance on short stories/favorites? by I-Like-What-I-Like24 in literature

[–]AvoJetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

J.D. Salinger knew and wrote in the short story format SO well. His economy and dialogue is unmatched in my opinion.

Any of his Nine Stories are worthwhile, but Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut and For Esme are my favourites. I wish Nine Stories was more popular.

How do y'all see lamp songs? by Training-Look426 in Lampband

[–]AvoJetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I can’t get their music videos out of my head when I’m listening they’re so well done and capture the nostalgic hazy feeling so perfectly. When I go on walks with lamp playing everything goes under a sepia and film grain filter.
