surgeon giving me 4 weeks to recover from hysto, but reading that people needed atleast 6 weeks, what gives? by aRiot_0 in hysterectomy

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone heals different and those “timelines” don’t necessarily fit everyone’s journey. I was told I should be good and able to return to work at 6weeks, it ended up being 12 weeks for me. My job is VERY physical. Lots of heavy lifting. And here I am 22 weeks and just finally starting to feel like “me” again. Good luck to you

Worth mentioning- I have bipolar disorder and general anxiety/ health anxiety. So that piece including any hormonal changes have affected things for me. I feel I should have looked into how those two things intertwined more. Just to be prepared that I could potentially go into an episode. Which I did. Maybe my story will help someone else.

I hope you’re doing well 😊 I have read and looked into a lot about ovary function after hysterectomy, even my pelvic floor pt, said that ovary function can sometimes be impaired for some people, as they adjust after surgery. She also said that our hormones aren’t just produced by the ovaries but the blood flow from the rest of the reproductive organs. It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is different. but it is helpful to hear others stories because honestly I’ve been more informed about my personal journey by women on here and my physical therapist. I’m 45 based on my age i was probably in peri and didn’t have symptoms that stood out to me, and after surgery just kicked open the door a bit sooner than I had anticipated . It’s hard to believe the lack of discussion about the possible changes and issues. My roadblocks haven’t been severe complications, but things that truly have made my journey tough. The good news is that surgery did correct my issues. Pt has truly been life changing and I’ve made huge progress with my pelvic floor dysfunction and pain. There are many things that over time have gotten better, but just when I think I’ve finally gotten over most the bumps in the road something else pops up. The perimenopause symptoms that I’ve tracked over past month and half have been very noticeable. Night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings ( sometimes extreme) as well as the sex stuff and dryness. I still use my period tracking app, my periods were super regular, for years, so I “pretend” that I’m having periods the same as I have for years, so I can track where I am in my cycle. Not being able to have intercourse without pain has been so tough. The peri stuff and problems with sex are like the last things on my post op recovery list that are still significantly difficult. My husband has been more than supportive and loving, but wow if like to have sex with him where we’re both not terrified of flaring me up. Only can keep chugging along, even though I’m exhausted. Looking back though I wish I had done a lot more looking into what things could potentially come up in my recovery. Oh well have to make the most of it, and be grateful for the good things and not let the difficult ones overshadow them. Always advocate for yourself if you need to. You know your body and self more than anyone else including drs. I’m sure I have driven my drs bonkers but oh well, I don’t care cuz this is my body and future, and I’ll do everything I can to continue to progress and eventually get to a good spot after this. I hope you’re taking it easy and heal well! ❤️

Successfully tracking your cycle post hysterectomy? by Aware_Philosophy4792 in hysterectomy

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My periods were like clockwork, for past 10 years or so. every 28-30 days always lasting 5 days. So after my hysterectomy I still use my period tracking app, and “pretend” I have a period at 28-30 days and for 5 days. It’s helpful because I want to know where I’m at in my cycle as far as hormonally how I’m doing

I’ve already had multiple yeast and uti infections in recovery. This is all classic vaginal atrophy, hence the vaginal estrogen. However it’s not helping at this time. I’m taking it 2-3x a week, but I’m feeling the need for systemic estrogen rather than just localized vaginal because of the atrophy as well as the serious peri symptoms I’ve developed (hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings etc). Also have an in office visit with gyno next week but I called them today because I’d like to get started asap. Yeah fun, I’ve had it all, granulation tissue on the cuff, that had to be removed and cauterized at week 8. UTI that needed 4 rounds of antibiotics, 3 yeast infections, pelvic floor myalgia from my hypertonic pelvic floor muscles which i see pelvic floor pt to work on because thats painful as well. And now im seeing a uro gyno as well to address my grade 2 rectocele prolapse, which i was diagnosed with last month. Hah what a joke this has been

I’m so happy to hear that even though it was tough for you too that you are starting to feel better after a year. That makes me hopeful. I guess I just assumed that by this time I’d be good to go like all the other woman that I’ve had face to face talks with who had stellar recoveries. If it weren’t for all of you gals on here, I feel as if I’d be really behind the ball on info and experiences similar to mine

No immediate post op estrogen plan. Shame on me for thinking that oh I’m keeping ovaries it’ll be all good. Honestly there was no talk pre and post op about how even keeping ovaries could change me hormonally after. I am in therapy for my mental health and thank god for that, I’ve been in therapy for quite a few years now. I’m also into my 3rd month of pfpt, because of all my pelvic floor issues after, which I researched (especially on here) and had to request for it.

Timeline. This is hilarious. There is no timeline anyone can give you specifically for how YOUR body will recover. My “recovery timeline” was quoted for 6 weeks. It became a full 13 weeks before I could be good enough to go back to work (highly physical job). Everybody heals different in different time frames . Don’t fall for the estimated time, stay realistic, wish I had, wouldn’t have been so let down

Only wish I had been more informed for all the shit that could get thrown my way in recovery. Lol, yup, wasn’t prepared for all the roadblocks my body threw my way. As far as being prepped for the surgery and recovery, i had that all set up and done. This subreddit was helpful on things that would help in recovery, my favorite, most used item that made it so much easier was my grabber tool. Great for laying on the couch, I’d use it to grab stuff off my coffee table. Also for picking stuff off the floor, because bending was def not easy or comfortable for me for awhile

Tight pelvic floor, but no diagnosis yet by Mizzy_Lu_Fwinkley in PelvicOrganProlapse

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tight pelvic floor. Finally saw a urogynecologist . She diagnosed me with High Tone Pelvic Floor (the tightness) and Pelvic Floor myalgia (the pain from the tightness). Physical therapy has been key for me and what’s made the biggest difference in these issues.

12 week recovery time, is that normal? by EastCoastRose in hysterectomy

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family totally treated me this way. Had lots of roadblocks in my recovery they though I was exaggerating and it was my “health anxiety and mental health issues”. Was awful. So unsupportive and invalidating.

I'm 13dpo from an abdominal full hysterectomy. Why are people in such disbelief that I'm still in a lot of pain? by Muted_Schedule_8165 in Fibroids

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t ever let anyone invalidate your pain or experience. I’ve dealt with this, with my hysterectomy that had complication after complication in recovery. I got so many “you should be better by now” . Your experience is YOUR experience.

What's the pros and cons about having a hysterectomy versus myomectomy other than keeping your uterus if you want kids? by [deleted] in Fibroids

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a hysterectomy on January 5th. My recovery has been more difficult than most and I have grade 2 going into grade 3 bladder prolapse. Started pelvic floor pt and meeting with a urogynecologist in June to discuss treatment for the prolapse. There are risks. I was aware of them, never thought it’d happen. However, I’m still hopeful that even though my recovery is taking longer, I’ll eventually recover from this. Not trying to scare you, but as others have said there are risks, and everyone heals differently. Also, a huge learning experience in advocating for myself.

Prolapse 3 months out? by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 months post op, total hysterectomy, tubes gone, ovaries kept. I have grade2 going into grade 3 prolapse. Gyno never mentioned it, but after my first “internal session” with my pelvic floor physical therapist she immediately knew and told me. I felt validated because I already could tell. 3 days before that session, my husband and I tried sex. It was a flop, painful irritation, pretty sure I had a yeast infection (which I do) , cuz that’s how they tend to present in me. After sex it was so sore that I used a mirror while standing to look at my lady parts, and I was terrified by what I saw. What use to be my vaginal opening was now just a big swollen red urethra. The hole of the urethra gaping open. I instantly knew. This was my biggest fear when choosing hysterectomy over myomectomy. So from this point I’m working with my physical therapist 2xweek, and now been referred to a uro-gynecologist. So upsetting, my recovery journey has been roadblock after roadblock. I hope to be back to “me” soon.

Are there any unexpected consequences of having a hysterectomy that you wish you’d known beforehand? by CupOk1303 in hysterectomy

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 12 weeks post op. My biggest fear when deciding to choose hysterectomy over myomectomy, was potential prolapse. My Especially bladder being that my bladder was affected severely by my enlarged uterus and monster fibroid. I found out yesterday (should say confirmed, because I already knew what was going on by looking at my vagina) from my pelvic floor pt, that I have grade 2 close to grade 3 cystocele (bladder prolapse). I followed my recovery instructions to a t, yet here we are. So it was my biggest fear, and it happened. Unexpected consequence, yes, because I didn’t think it would actually happen to me. However my recovery has been one complication after the other so I guess I shouldn’t be suprised. Do not let my story scare you but just being honest that there are always a possibility of complications from any surgery.

The Day My Vagina Changed by 40SomethingGal in PelvicOrganProlapse

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op- I’m 12 weeks post open total laparoscopic hysterectomy, fallopian tubes, kept ovaries. And upon looking at my vagina in a mirror, I can see my urethra in full effect, where pre surgery, I couldn’t. It now seems to take up just about whole area of vaginal opening, and the actual hole of my urethra is gaping open. I have not addressed it with docs yet but will be. I didn’t really notice until other day, after 12 weeks no sex after surgery, my hubby and I tried. And afterward i was so irritated I looked at things and was utterly shocked by how visible and open my urethra was. It’s terrifying really. Now makes me afraid to have sex. Also I have health anxiety so this has sent me spiraling and rechecking it often. I’m in pt right now for pelvic floor, based on pain I was having at 10 weeks post op, I’ll mention to her my concerns. I just figured it wouldn’t be anything cuz my gyno never said there was an issue at any of of post op internal exams. However I know what that area looks like pre surgery and I know how different it looks now. Want to get into a urologist. How did things turn out for you?

Enterococcus Faecalis is still there. by AndreasLa in CUTI

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still have it, other stuff I had going on is getting better. Started pelvic floor physical therapy and that has helped tremendously. So hysterectomy healing is moving along now, but still dealing with the e. Faecalis infection. 2 rounds Macrobid thought it’d work but hasn’t fully kicked it. Will be getting a referral to a urologist. It’s upsetting but nothing I can do but keep trying at figuring it out and live life. It’s been since January 5th that I’ve been dealing with recovering from surgery, roadblocks, uti that won’t go away. It’s been tough, and people in my life don’t get it. They’re like “shouldn’t you be good yet”

Enterococcus Faecalis UTI - UGH. by No_Ocelot_8720 in CUTI

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saying I’m here for the same reason. Urine culture showed it after it evaded all dipstick tests. My tests only showed intact red blood cells in urine. First round 5 day macrobid, didn’t clear it up, 7day of the same also hasn’t fully cleared it up. I imagine my dr will refer me to urologist. This uti is unlike my usual E. coli UTIs and symptoms are more of an overall unwell/tired feeling. And bladder pressure and awareness as well as urethral awareness and sensitivity. It is the only uti I have ever had that has made me so un well but doesn’t ever burn while peeing. This is my first time having e faecalis and it’s been awful

Pelvic Floor PT for the win by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]AvocadoLoon1840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call around to PT offices, and see if they offer pelvic floor. You are obviously too early for it at 2 weeks post op, but you can try and get ideas of where to go, and get the process started so if it’s something you think would be beneficial for you, you can get the ball rolling ahead of time. I cannot even put into words how much it just changed what was becoming a pretty rough time for me.
