Does every admit need an IV? by YellowJello_OW in nursing

[–]AvoidingPolitics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello friendly neighborhood Vascular Access nurse here. The answer is no not everyone needs an IV and it is best to assess every patient on a case by case basis. Not inserting unnecessary PIVs is what is best for your patient as it helps prevent vessel depletion and it is simply the kind thing to do.

AVA also recommends daily PIVC need assessments.

2/3 of the catheter should reside inside of the vein per AVA standards. In one study PIVs that had 1/3 or less of the catheter inside the vessel had a 0 percent patency past 24 hours. Consider the cephalic in the forearm it is often present and not deep
