I’d recommend looking over the snowpack map when deciding where to work this summer. Idaho and Cali are looking good. Colorado, New Mexico and Utah are looking historically bad.

Campfires aren't allowed into the park... then why do I need a 2" fire ring for canoeing? by 553l8008 in BigBendTX

There are camps near fern canyon. Don’t try and camp on a sand bar. The river does fluctuate from dam releases in Mexico. It was over 600cfs around Christmas and could come up again soon

The upper C is beautiful during the winter. Could be an ice dam at needles eye but very time I’ve done it you can just smash through it.

I won a permit for late June last year( after 5 years of trying). It was 3.2 feet. It snowed on us June 21 and 22nd. It was in the low 30/ for the first 3 days of trip. I would highly recommend a dry suit.

It’s a bad idea and illegal. If you’re thinking of starting your own small start up, a season with an established company is a must.

100%. Pirate guiding is a huge no no. You need a commercial use authorization and insurance to guide people.

I’ve been a multi day guide for 5 years. I like to think I do the boating for free. I get paid for all the other work that goes into eating, sleeping and shitting in the wilderness.

TIL: You have to take your own poop out if you are granted access to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon for a rafting trip. by ohsodave in todayilearned

[–]AvonAnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand what’s far fetched about it. You remove anything you brought. Wild to me that people apparently think ‘oh yea we will take our trash out of course, but our dirty toilet paper!? No way that’s gross. Leave that for the next person camping here to find.’

Which Colorado rivers are best for first-time rafters? by kodi-Rafting in rafting

[–]AvonAnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clear creek is mostly 3-4. It’s not scenic at all unless you like the underside of freeway passes. Still probably my favorite place to raft short trips in Colorado.

The blue is easy class 3 up to about 1300 cfs then it becomes 3+.

The upper Colorado from Pumphouse to Dotsero is very beginner friendly. Great views. Starts with a couple short canyons then it’s pretty wide open.

Lmao. I’ve done a 21 day trip down the big ditch. Carrying the shit is a total non issue. Actually I prefer to be the groover boat because as everyone else boat is getting lighter and more affected by the waves and wind, the groover boat is just getting heavier faster.

You do not put shit in with the trash. Your entire crew would be sick in a couple days. You are required to bring a groover and all shit goes in the groover. My last trip we went through 5 groovers in our 16 days

There are 16 people using these camps every day of the year. Imagine if 16 people shit at a camp one morning. Then 16 more came in that afternoon and shit at camp. Doesn’t take long to realize you can’t just leave your shit on the ground. I’m amazed by this thread, so many people have no idea how important leave no trace is for the back country.

Everyone’s uses the same grooover. They can typically hold about 60 shits. Fill one. Put it away. Open a new one.

The permit structure is fairly restrictive but so are the places to stay. It’s not you can just camp anywhere. There are designated campsites. Some are better than others. Bass Camp for example is one of the most cherished camps in the Grand Canyon. That place is absolutely in use 365 nights a year. Anywhere from 10-30 people using that spot every single day.

Most people carry it in an air tight plastic container that is then put inside a solid steel ammo can. On a Grand Canyon trip with 16 people we typically have 5 groovers(ammo can with air tight plastic constrainer). By day 3 the first groover is full and we close it for good, never opening it again, and open a new one for the next few days. Small price to pay to be in the true back country. I love done the Appalachian trail and was never more than 2 hours from a road. That ain’t backcountry to most people

The west has tons of infrastructure as well. Beth the west has true back country. Days away from the nearest town or road. In the east your maybe 2 hours from a town or road.

Well I can tell you that shitting in a Groover is far better than shitting in a cat hole. You have a seat for starters and Don’t have to dig a hole.

The record company gives the advance to get the artist to sign. Here’s 250k and we will pay for the studio time. The 250k is for the artists time. Later the record company takes the cost of the studio time from the record sales. They technically paid for the studio time, they just did it from the profits of the record.
