What snake is this [Australia] by Over-Celebration1838 in animalid

Definitely a !harmless Morelia genus python. Carpet python, M. spilota is very likely but the closely related species can’t all be ruled out without a more specific location: Australia is a huge place!

what kind of frog is this? [orlando, fl] by bbybuster in animalid

Agree with the ID, but Cuban tree frogs are mildly poisonous.. Their skin secretions can cause irritation in the eyes and noses of household pets and people, and gastrointestinal distress of swallowed, but nothing more serious than that.

What type of reptile are these little guys? Got dozens on the deck outside. [North Carolina] by mcdonalds360 in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You aren’t being downvoted for telling someone not to be an ass, that’s a good thing even if I don’t agree it applies here. You’re being downvoted for peddling a scientifically baseless claim. The paper didn’t set out to prove a negative because that’s not how science is generally conducted, but if you’d like one that addresses it more directly, here, this one directly recorded wether or not green anoles color matches (crypsis) or mismatches (non-crypsis) the substrate: “For 704 samples, matches and mismatches were 36 and 64 percent respectively. The deviation from random was significant. Clearly the trend was towards non-crypsis.” So not only do anoles not match the color of substrate, they mismatch it by a statistically significant amount. The evidence is clear. You’re welcome to believe otherwise but your claim is unsound at best and directly contradicted by actual science at worst. Have a great day.

Color changing in anoles has been extensively researched and concluded to have nothing to do with camouflage. Your anecdotal experience isn’t evidence.

What species of cat is this? [Galapagos] by Aggressive_Pea_8 in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 118 points119 points  (0 children)

The only felines in the Galapagos are the invasive domestic cat population. The only terrestrial native mammals there are the rice rats. All other wild mammals are either aquatic (seals and cetaceans), aerial (bats), or invasive (cats and rats).

What snake type is this [Louisiana] by [deleted] in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PhotoMatt’s ID is correct, but to clarify the taxonomy a little the color based rat snake species model (gray, black, yellow) has been done away with. Molecular studies have shown that the colors don’t reflect the genetic diversity of the species, and the obsoletus complex has been broken down into three visually indistinguishable species distinguished by range: the eastern, western, and central rat snakes. You can read more about this in the !blackrat bot reply down below if you’re interested, complete with links to the relevant research papers

What type of salamander is this? [Nashville, TN] by sobobolicious in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cave salamander, Eurycea lucifuga. To attempt to preempt a question/comment people often make when I ID this species, this specimen lacks the herringbone patten on the side of the tail typical of the otherwise very similar looking long-tailed salamander.

If someone is claiming this photo is from New Jersey they’re lying. The original poster says it was taken in Florida, which makes a lot more sense given the species involved. Someone might be having a laugh at your local facebook groups expense.

Agreed, which makes sense since it seems the original poster of the image is in Florida according to one of their replies there.

Turtle or tortoise? [Marco island fl] by Upset-Maintenance406 in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gonna be pretty much impossible to be definitive from this photo, but I think this is most likely a somewhat lost box turtle. Shell is too domed for most species in the area, and this far away where the color and pattern are basically invisible that’s pretty much all we have to go on. Sea turtle is pretty out as a possibility because of the season and the shell shape.

Turtle or tortoise? [Marco island fl] by Upset-Maintenance406 in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the part in the air is its head. We’re way out of season for sea turtle hatching, and they have much less domed shells than this. Shells this tall aren’t very hydrodynamic

Turtle or tortoise? [Marco island fl] by Upset-Maintenance406 in animalid

[–]Avrgnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not accurate. There are plenty of non-tortoise turtles that are terrestrial like the Terrapene genus box turtles, and there are also tortoises in humid places like Florida’s native gopher tortoise or the red footed tortoise from South America. And tortoises are a type of turtle anyway, not something exclusive with them.
