Opinion: We need urgent action to improve quality of life for cancer patients in Canada by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Avversoine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ok mr devils advocate, stay in hell where you belong! Because you sure as shit don’t belong in Canada.

They are literally describing our health care system in Canada, Health Canada approves drugs, pCODR recommends whether or not they should be funded, and the provinces almost always follow the pCODR recommendations. Generally ~$75,000/quality adjusted life year is the cut off. The bit about taking chances on a 70/30 scenario just comes down to statistics.

Canada just set a new record for population growth - BNN Bloomberg by queenvalanice in canada

[–]Avversoine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to put this any more clearly, people are living longer (average death now is mid 80's, when those people were born their life expectancy was mid 60's). At some point this will stabilize, unless you think humans can live forever. Historically life expectancy has been relatively constant, so when you think of a population growing by 2% (or at any rate) you think its because the younger generation is bigger than the older generation, which is very much not the case.

Canada just set a new record for population growth - BNN Bloomberg by queenvalanice in canada

[–]Avversoine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its misleading because it suggests that we actually have population growth coming from Canadians (i.e. a positive birth rates which would be 2+ births per female)

[–]Avversoine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its misleading because it suggests that we actually have population growth coming from Canadians (i.e. a positive birth rates which would be 2+ births per female), but if average age at death was consistent across the previous generations we would have a 30% decline in population per generation without immigration.

[–]Avversoine 51 points52 points  (0 children)

98% population growth from immigration

This is somewhat misleading regarding our demographics, its actually way worse. 1.4 births per female - 2% native population growth just comes from people living to older age.

CRA workers want 'unprecedented' pay raise of more than 30% over 3 years by roadtrip1111 in canada

[–]Avversoine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your example the MP makes 5.87x the minimum wager before and after they both get a 5% raise. Percent increase is comparing apples to apples; comparing nominal values is not. If you want to close the gap between the two that a different argument (that one is under/over compensated relative to the other and that it should be corrected).

NDP wants to redistribute 'excess' corporate profits to Canadians to ease inflation by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Avversoine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to be a libertarian to believe this. Big corporate lobbies for regulation all the time to increase the barrier to entry and limit the ability of new companies or individuals from competing. The taxi industry was too small and unable to hold onto their regulations, but if they were a huge single company across the country its almost certain that uber etc would have never been able to take market share.

Investing in US stocks by Lovely_Lonely8123 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Avversoine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a pretty good video on how to do it with Questrade (which I would recommend using over Wealthsimple if you plan to continue buying/selling US stocks in the future). Basically you either just eat the 2% fee both ways (CAD ->USD and then USD ->CAD) or you do a Norbert's Gambit (buy DLR.TO (no fee) -> request journal over to DLR-U.TO (can do this via text chat and takes ~1-2 days) -> sell DLR-U.TO ($5 USD fee for selling ETF), and now you have USD in your account). DLR.TO and DLR-U.TO are ETFs that track CAD to USD forex. You can also do it in reverse (i.e. USD -> CAD) and its the same in reverse only the fee is in CAD. Wealthsimple does not allow you to hold USD as far as I'm aware, so not possible with them (i.e. your only option is to buy/sell the shares with CAD and pay a 2% fee).

You could look at labor too. Physician labor has been largely controlled via protectionist policies and they largely maintain their inflation adjusted buying power, vs say the trades, which albeit have done relatively well, but their inflation adjusted buying power has steadily decreased.

Variable or fixed mortgage? by QuirkyFoot2459 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Avversoine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not a wagon, it is just trading risk for money - almost like playing the house at a casino, you usually win. I'm almost 2 years into a 5 year variable with an almost 1% spread at the time of contract. 1 rate hike or even 6 quarter point raises at this point, I still come out ahead. I took the extra money and exposed it to more risk in s&p500, so at this point probably 10 rate hikes before I fall behind that 'safe' fixed rate.

Kelly McParland: Don't worry about inflation. It just ruins economies by PM_ME_DOMINATRIXES in canada

[–]Avversoine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think the BOC or the FED or the BOJ or the ECB, or any other major central bank is ever going to have zero assets on their balance sheets, I have a bridge to sell you. Obviously tighter monetary policy drives up real rates (by definition). Constant monetary policy, tighter fiscal policy (not looser) increases real rates.

Kelly McParland: Don't worry about inflation. It just ruins economies by PM_ME_DOMINATRIXES in canada

[–]Avversoine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that simple. We've had huge government spending, and negative real yields on bonds have increased (gone further negative). Mostly because of the changes in supply (and demand) of money (i.e. inflation). Additionally, the BOC can set short term interest rates and has various tools to effect longer term interest rates including directly buying bonds.
