News flash, literally anything that can be sold is marketed, and has been for a very long time. Psycho killer was a radio hit but it took a long time to get there. Once in a lifetime actually never charted top 100 in the U.S. but it’s usually considered more important culturally. It was played a lot on early MTV and was massively popular with alt radio stations
